Footy picks
Cape Town - Each round of the 2013/14 English Premiership season, a panel of Sport24 staff and occasional guest tipsters have a crack at predicting the results - do the exercise yourself, if you like, and see how you compare afterwards.

Compiled by Rob Houwing (Newcastle-partial), the others are Garrin Lambley (Everton), Dominic Valentine (Liverpool, and the defending champion), Herman Mostert (Chelsea) and newcomer Earl Haupt (another ‘Pool fan).

Three points are awarded for an entirely correct scoreline, and one for right result.

THE PRIME ATTRACTION

EVERTON v ARSENAL
Sunday, 14:30

Well, the Gunners’ title fire appears to have been doused, unless there are dramatic implosions by those above them in the closing weeks. Instead they are now grappling even for retention of a top-four slot to ensure elite European activity next season ... and the biggest threat to that status comes from Sunday’s Goodison Park opponents, who are four points behind them with a game in hand. If the Toffees win, the revised maths is pretty easy, isn’t it? So the stakes are really high for this one. Everton are in fine form, considering comfortable away wins at Newcastle and Fulham, and I tip a home victory. Nevertheless, the panel offers you all options, in line with the possibility of a real humdinger ...

Rob: Everton 2 Arsenal 1
Garrin: 1-1
Dominic: 1-2
Herman: 1-2
Earl: 2-1
Last season: 1-1

THE GRUDGE MATCH

WEST HAM v LIVERPOOL
Sunday, 17:00

Liverpool’s title hunger really is for real! They come off a 4-0 roasting of hapless Tottenham at Anfield and sit pretty, two points clear of Chelsea at the top of the table. Now they travel to London to take on a West Ham side buoyed by an away win against Sunderland on Monday night. But all of us nevertheless fancy ‘Pool to safely bag another three precious points, and the reason I have offered this as the grudge match is because the Hammers were, well, hammered in their visit to Merseyside earlier in the campaign. It was 4-1 to Liverpool then, in a game marked by own goals each way, plus the obligatory presence of one Luis Suarez on the score-sheet. Any bets against the latter event again?

Rob: West Ham 0 Liverpool 2
Garrin: 1-2
Dominic: 0-1
Herman: 1-2
Earl: 1-2
Last season: 2-3

THE DESPERATE DUEL

TOTTENHAM v SUNDERLAND
Monday, 21:00

Spurs have shown some fresh frailties in recent weeks and enter this home game off a proper lambasting at Anfield. But if they still hold out increasingly forlorn-looking hopes of a Champions League ticket – they’re currently at least eight points off that particular zone – they need to string together a strong run very smartly. Just as desperate, albeit for even more depressing reasons, will be Monday night’s visitors the Black Cats. Second-from-bottom Sunderland look more and more likely to take the drop, especially as their games in hand are toughies and time is running out fast for a revival. Losing at home to West Ham rather summed up their plight earlier this week. A full house says “Spurs” ... although mostly by just the odd goal.

Rob: Tottenham 1 Sunderland 0
Garrin: 2-1
Dominic: 2-0
Herman: 1-0
Earl: 1-0
Last season: 1-0
