'Expert' UK footy tips

Cape Town - Each round of the 2013/14 English Premiership season, a panel of Sport24 staff and occasional guest tipsters have a crack at predicting the results - do the exercise yourself, if you like, and see how you compare afterwards.

Compiled by Rob Houwing (Newcastle-partial), the others are Garrin Lambley (Everton), Dominic Valentine (Liverpool, and the defending champion), Herman Mostert (Chelsea) and newcomer Earl Haupt (another ‘Pool fan).

Three points are awarded for an entirely correct scoreline, and one for right result.

THE PRIME ATTRACTION

NEWCASTLE v MANCHESTER CITY
Sunday, 16:05

Sadly for this Toon-leaning writer, Newcastle enter this particular fixture – against a bogey team of note, too – on a faltering run of form after a golden stint. They’ve crashed twice in the Premiership (admittedly only 1-0 each time) and been quickly dumped from the FA Cup by Cardiff. Sunday’s visitors, by contrast, come off a 6-0 League Cup drubbing of West Ham, and five Premiership successes on the trot! Just one point behind leaders Arsenal, City may well feel they could seize the lead following this weekend’s programme – and should for a day anyway as the Gunners only see action on Monday night. The Blues thrashed the Magpies 4-0 in the home fixture earlier this season, and also won 3-1 in the north-east last season. Eish, with one or two key Toon defenders injured or suspended, even I can’t see them snatching anything from this one ...

Rob: Newcastle 1 Manchester City 2
Garrin: 0-2
Dominic: 1-2
Herman: 1-2
Earl: 1-3
Last season: 1-3

THE GRUDGE MATCH

ASTON VILLA v ARSENAL
Monday, 22:00

This was an obvious choice: when Villa visited the Emirates Stadium on the opening day of the season, two strikes from Christian Benteke helped power the Midlanders to a shock 3-1 triumph. Although the Gunners have mostly transformed at a rate of knots since then, they are unlikely to have forgotten that result when they enter the return fixture on Monday night. Arsene Wenger will be imploring his troops to go all out for a revenge win, with Manchester City breathing uncomfortably down their necks at the top, although I just fancy Villa may be up for a point. Only Herman shares that sentiment, mind ...

Rob: Aston Villa 1 Arsenal 1
Garrin: 1-2
Dominic: 1-2
Herman: 1-1
Earl: 0-2
Last season: 0-0

THE DESPERATE DUEL

MANCHESTER UNITED v SWANSEA
Saturday, 19:30

OK, there were more obvious candidates for this slot – like 17th-placed Cardiff against 19th-lying and crisis-hit West Ham – but they have certainly reached a climate of “desperation” at supposed giant club Man Utd, haven’t they? The Red Devils are reeling from three losses in a row (across three different competitions) and now come up against their FA Cup conquerors Swansea at Old Trafford once again! It seems David Moyes hasn’t entirely lost the backing of the United faithful, but he badly needs a restorative win here. All of us envisage that happening, presumably using the argument that lightning won’t strike twice in favour of the Welsh outfit.

Rob: Manchester United 2 Swansea 0
Garrin: 2-0
Dominic: 2-1
Herman: 2-1
Earl: 2-1
Last season: 2-1
