'Expert' UK footy tips

Cape Town - Each round of the 2012/13 English Premiership season, a panel of Sport24 staff and occasional guest tipsters have a crack at predicting the results - do it yourself, if you like, and see how you compare afterwards.

Compiled by Rob Houwing (Newcastle-partial), the others are Garrin Lambley (Everton, and last season’s winner), Dominic Valentine (Liverpool) and Herman Mostert (Chelsea).

Three points are awarded for an entirely correct scoreline, and one for right result.

THE PRIME ATTRACTION

ARSENAL v MANCHESTER UNITED
Sunday, 17:00

Well, this could just as easily have been the grudge match, couldn’t it? But the fact remains that it is also the Premiership game with most obvious mass appeal this weekend. Never mind that United have already won the title: I simply can’t imagine Sir Alex Ferguson being prepared to stomach the thought of defeat to his old adversary Arsene Wenger ... and that’s even if the Gunners do provide an immaculate enough, traditional guard of honour to the champs (possibly with clenched collective teeth, mind). Let’s not forget that there’s still plenty at stake for Arsenal in Champions League qualification terms, and perhaps that’s reason enough for the Red Devils to wish to be nasty little sunshine-spoilers at the Emirates. The Robin van Persie return to his old stomping ground only gives the clash extra spice. Don’t leave the telly for a minute ...

Rob: Arsenal 1 Manchester United 2
Garrin: 1-1
Dominic: 2-1
Herman: 1-1
Last season: 1-2

THE GRUDGE MATCH

WIGAN v TOTTENHAM
Saturday, 16:00

In early November, Spurs were booed off White Hart Lane after suffering a shock 1-0 reverse to their humble Wigan visitors, Ben Watson’s strike doing the damage. Who knows, perhaps it’s a result that will come back to haunt the Londoners should they fail to secure lucrative Champions League status by season’s end (they’re fifth as things stand). So revenge will be strongly on their minds for the return fixture. Mind you, Wigan are famous later chargers from the bowels of the Premiership table, and their fans would go dilly if they could somehow register a 2012/13 double over these highly-ranked foes! But they’re 18th at present, and only an unlikely full house of points will see them draw level on 34 with 17th-placed Aston Villa, who only play on Monday night. Coming off that fine 3-1 triumph over Manchester City, it’s hard to see Tottenham botching this.

Rob: Wigan 0 Tottenham 2
Garrin: 1-2
Dominic: 1-1
Herman: 1-2
Last season: 1-2

THE DESPERATE DUEL

ASTON VILLA v SUNDERLAND
Monday, 21:00

Though it so pains me to say it, being rather more partial to the Black Cats’ biggest north-east rivals, Sunderland are on a mini-roll under the much-publicised new stewardship of one Paolo Di Canio – albeit that safety from relegation is not quite assured yet. But if there’s still a fair bit at stake for them, their plight is not nearly as desperate as hosts Villa’s. Having been solidly beaten 3-0 at Old Trafford last Monday to hand Manchester United the title, the Birmingham club are still precariously placed, only one rung higher than Wigan who occupy the “best” of the relegation-zone berths. This game may not be pretty, and I’m tipping a repeat of last season’s goalless tussle at Villa Park ...

Rob: Aston Villa 0 Sunderland 0
Garrin: 1-1
Dominic: 1-1
Herman: 1-1
Last season: 0-0
