Cape Town - Each round of the 2012/13 English Premiership season, a panel of Sport24 staff and occasional guest tipsters have a crack at predicting the results – do it yourself, if you like, and see how you compare afterwards.
Compiled by Rob Houwing (eternally Newcastle-partial), the others are Garrin Lambley (Everton, and last season’s winner), Dominic Valentine (Liverpool) and Herman Mostert (Chelsea).
Three points are awarded for an entirely correct scoreline, and one for right result.
THE PRIME ATTRACTION
MANCHESTER CITY v MANCHESTER UNITED
Sunday, 15:30
The backdrop could hardly be more engrossing for this epic derby clash on Sunday: United boast a three-point lead over last season’s champions, whilst City enter it in the knowledge that they did the league double over their arch-rivals in 2011/12. Fergie’s boys will still be having nightmares about the 1-6 scoreline at Old Trafford, though the chance to put that particular fixture right only comes later in the campaign (early April). Last season’s Eastlands meeting saw City pinch it 1-0, Vincent Kompany’s header just before halftime making the critical difference. On the day, ‘keeper Joe Hart was barely troubled by a stilted Red Devils showing in attack ... I would expect this one to be more up-tempo from both outfits. Not too surprisingly, three of us tip the draw option, though Dom anticipates a home win to move level on points at the top.
Rob: Manchester City 1 Manchester United 1
Garrin: 1-1
Dominic: 2-1
Herman: 1-1
Last season: 1-0
THE GRUDGE MATCH
FULHAM v NEWCASTLE
Monday, 22:00
Newcastle traditionally struggle in trips to London, something indicated last season by the fact that the only times they conceded five goals in the Premiership came at Tottenham (0-5) ... and Monday night’s opponents Fulham (2-5). So they will be looking for some sort of redemption at Craven Cottage. Whether they will earn it is quite another matter: after punching above their weight for a fifth-place finish in 2011/12, this season sees them labouring in 14th, although they broke a lengthy duck by beating Wigan a few days ago. Fulham will also have revival on their minds to some extent, mind you, because their last league result was a 0-3 home thumping at the hands of neighbours Spurs. The panel largely suggest another lean Toon trip south ...
Rob: Fulham 2 Newcastle 1
Garrin: 2-1
Dominic: 2-1
Herman: 1-1
Last season: 5-2
THE DESPERATE DUEL
WIGAN v QPR
Saturday, 17:00
One of the English studio panel assessing Wigan’s 3-0 reverse at Newcastle on Monday night said the Latics needed to remind themselves that staying up doesn’t simply mean they must go on a spirited late charge every season! They need to pick up more points earlier, but again this is mostly proving beyond them – they lie 16th and it will be worrying for their fans that they were so easily seen off at the Toon despite it being anything but a champagne Newcastle performance. As for QPR, their plight, of course, is significantly worse: no wins from 15 games says it all. It could be a grim old scrap under the circumstances, and three of us fancy the draw. Dom is once more the against-the-grainer ...
