English Premiership flutter (File)
Cape Town - Each round of the 2012/13 English Premiership season, a panel of Sport24 staff and occasional guest tipsters have a crack at predicting the results - do it yourself, if you like, and see how you compare afterwards.

Compiled by Rob Houwing (eternally Newcastle-partial), the others are Garrin Lambley (Everton, and last season’s winner), Dominic Valentine (Liverpool) and Herman Mostert (Chelsea).

Three points are awarded for an entirely correct scoreline, and one for right result.

THE PRIME ATTRACTION

CHELSEA v MANCHESTER CITY
Sunday, 17:00

Chelsea haven’t won in four Premiership matches and that, of course, will have contributed in no small measure to the rather brutal midweek axing of boss Roberto di Matteo. So they might have preferred easier opponents for Rafa Benitez’s first game in charge than Man City on Sunday. The defending champions may be out of the Champions League now, after a notably disappointing campaign, but their league form is fine – two wins on the trot including last week’s 5-0 drubbing of troubled Aston Villa. Still, our panel strongly tips a feisty draw, although Herman votes with his heart. In last season’s equivalent game at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea handed City their first loss of the season in early December ... they won 2-1 courtesy of a late penalty from substitute Frank Lampard, having trailed after only two minutes when Mario Balotelli had netted for the visitors.

Rob: Chelsea 1 Manchester City 1
Garrin: 1-1
Dominic: 1-1
Herman: 2-1
Last season: 2-1

THE GRUDGE MATCH

TOTTENHAM v LIVERPOOL
Wednesday, 21:45

This game next Wednesday night gets the grudge branding based on last season’s events in the corresponding game at White Hart Lane: ‘Pool were roasted 4-0. At least they could say they ended the game in some understandable form of disarray because they had nine men on the pitch – Charlie Adam and Martin Skrtel had been sent for early showers. The goals on the day came from Messrs Adebayor (2), Modric and Defoe. Spurs go into this one suffering a 2-5 hangover from their away meeting with arch-rivals Arsenal, but most of us tip a sharp bounce-back. Garrin prefers a draw, perhaps having taking a hopeful signal for the Reds from their 3-0 beating of Wigan last time out.

Rob: Tottenham 2 Liverpool 1
Garrin: 1-1
Dominic: 2-1
Herman: 2-1
Last season: 4-0

THE DESPERATE DUEL

MANCHESTER UNITED v QPR
Saturday, 17:00

These really are grey old days for Rangers: they have claimed a less-than-princely four points from a possible 36 and not surprisingly as a result firmly prop up the table – four points adrift and seemingly without a paddle. Losing 3-1 at home to fellow-battlers Southampton has only further deepened their plight. Their “reward” for such incompetence is a demanding trip now to Old Trafford, where they were beaten 2-0 last season. Our tipsters offer just two likely score-lines between them ... the Red Devils will either net twice or three times, with no leakage at the other end of the park. QPR’s best hope is the possibility of United harbouring some self-doubt after the 1-0 reverse at Norwich, but don’t count on it ...

Rob: Manchester United 2 QPR 0
Garrin: 2-0
Dominic: 3-0
Herman: 3-0
Last season: 2-0
