Cape Town - Each round of the 2011/12 English Premiership season, a panel of Sport24 staff or guest tipsters have a crack at predicting the results - do it yourself, if you like, and see how you compare afterwards.
Our forecasts also offer assistance (if that is the right word!) to those who take part in the SuperBru megapool (Pool code: cropriot) created by Sport24.
Compiled by Rob Houwing (the champion for the last two seasons but a Newcastle supporter for his sins), the others are Garrin Lambley (very Everton-partial), and David Brooke (Manchester United).
Here’s the next, hectic batch of Festive Season fare ...
THE PRIME ATTRACTION
WEST BROM v MANCHESTER CITY
Monday, 17:00
Let’s not pretend this won’t be a “difficult” match for the Baggies! The in-form and currently rock-solid leaders are coming to town, after all ... but at least the fixture doesn’t come at a bad time from a confidence point of view for West Brom. They have come off successive, very heartening away wins (at Blackburn and Newcastle respectively) which have suddenly propelled them to top-half-of-the-table status. Now they have a fairytale chance for a hat-trick of victories as they size up such illustrious foes on home turf. Nevertheless, our wily tipsters aren’t fooled: we’ve all gone for the City win – me by only the odd goal, mind – with David suggesting a festive feast for Messrs Aguero, Balotelli and company.
Rob: West Brom 1 Manchester City 2
Garrin: 0-2
David: 1-5
Last season: 0-2
THE GRUDGE MATCH
LIVERPOOL v NEWCASTLE
Friday (Dec 30), 21:45
Needless to say I am a grumpy Festive Season camper ... my beloved Toon somehow always manage to lose the plot at this time of supposed ho-ho-ho. “Free-fall” doesn’t quite apply yet, thanks to their early-season cushion, but this shapes as another perilous fixture, with form having vanished out of the back window. Why the grudge billing? Well, it goes back to the time when ‘Pool used to annoyingly see off Newcastle by 4-3 sort of scorelines in the rollercoaster Keegan era. Not only that, but the current Reds squad contains a few north-east old boys like Andy Carroll, Jose Enrique and Craig Bellamy. It’s a standalone Friday-nighter for TV purposes, and I reckon the heat will crank up a notch or two. Bravely, I tip a point grab at Anfield by my struggling side, but Garrin cannot bring himself to be an honorary Magpie ...
Rob: Liverpool 1 Newcastle 1
Garrin: 2-1
David: 2-2
Last season: 3-0
THE DESPERATE DUEL
BOLTON v WOLVES
Saturday (Dec 31), 17:00
There has not been enough compelling evidence from either side to suggest they will be anything but basement battlers for the remainder of the campaign, has there? At the time of writing, Bolton were a particularly precarious 19th – though they’d just earned an important away win at Blackburn, the only team below them – and Wolves not much healthier in 17th. So it’s another potential six-pointer in the nether regions and will be grim and feisty, I’m sure. The panel leans toward a Trotters triumph, perhaps motivated by the result in this fixture last season.
