'Expert' UK footy tips

Cape Town - Each round of the 2011/12 English Premiership season, a panel of Sport24 staff tipsters have a crack at predicting the results - do it yourself, if you like; see the SuperBru details immediately below for your participation.

Compiled by Rob Houwing (the champion for the last two seasons but a Newcastle supporter for his sins), the others are colleagues Garrin Lambley (very Everton-partial), David Brooke (Manchester United), Dominic Valentine (Liverpool) and a welcome newcomer in the form of “converted” rugby devotee Tank Lanning (yup, another of those infernal Red Devils fans).

Think you can outwit the dimwits at Sport24?

If so, join the Sport24.co.za English Premiership Megapool on SuperBru, challenge your mates and the Sport24 team and stand a chance of winning your favourite team’s replica jersey.

THE PRIME ATTRACTION

ARSENAL v LIVERPOOL
Saturday, 13:45

Always a big clash anyway, this occasion will have more chilli sauce than usual after what happened in the corresponding game late last season. Dirk Kuyt equalised for ‘Pool with the last kick of the match unusually deep into stoppage time, and there was a touchline tantrum between rival managers Messrs Wenger and Dalglish. The result was also one of the last nails in the Gunners’ title-chase “coffin”. Pure gut feel tells me Arsenal will grab all three points, despite their less-than-sparkling start to the campaign. Even that staunch Kopite, Dominic, has surprisingly backed the home horse, whilst nobody among us can bring themselves to envisage a Liverpool three-pointer ...

Rob: Arsenal 2 Liverpool 1
Garrin: 1-1
David: 0-0
Tank: 2-2
Dominic: 2-1
Last season: 1-1

THE GRUDGE MATCH

SUNDERLAND v NEWCASTLE
Saturday, 13:00

A Toon fan and a Mackems fan are walking down the street when the alert Toon fan says “Look, a dead bird.”. So the Mackems fan looks up! Sorry, but I had to get to get that in before confessing -- a bit like Dominic for the Liverpool match above -- that I’ve let head overrule heart and gone wincingly for the Sunderland triumph in this always full-blooded derby. It means there’s some consolation for me if we do, indeed, lose ... and I’ll be over the moon if my tip is dud. Garrin fancies a hard-fought draw and my oh my, I do like Tank’s optimism for the black-and-whites!

Rob: Sunderland 1 Newcastle 0
Garrin: 1-1
David: 2-1
Tank: 0-1
Dominic: 2-1
Last season: 1-1

THE DESPERATE DUEL

SWANSEA v WIGAN
Saturday, 16:00

Perhaps they’ll gradually “adjust” to life in the top flight, but the early portents for the Welsh club weren’t too good, based on evidence from their Monday night 4-0 thumping at Man City. Despite their early grit, you always felt the sluices would eventually open and they did. So Swansea will be immediate hot tips for the drop, I reckon, and I even see ordinary Wigan nicking all three points on the road on Saturday. Mind you, Tank goes the other way and the others all see a stalemate.

Rob: Swansea 0 Wigan 1
Garrin: 1-1
David: 1-1
Tank: 2-1
Dominic: 1-1
Last season: Not applicable

Garrin: 2-0

Rob: Chelsea 2 West Brom 0
Garrin: 2-0
David: 1-0
Tank: 4-1

LEADERBOARD

Under our traditional, in-house scoring system for the five Sport24 staff featured here (three points for a wholly correct scoreline, one for right result), Dominic and Dave have set off best from the blocks, acquiring six points each, closely followed by Tank on five and then previous champions Rob and Garrin (3) bringing up the rear-– but insisting they are shrewd old foxes who know when to time a run.

In the broad, Sport24.co.za pool on SuperBru, which currently sports 720 players, “stormers4eva” - clearly a versatile sports guru? - leads comfortably after round one with 13.30 points under that competition’s system, automatically grabbing the yellow cap.
