'Expert' UK footy tips

Cape Town - Each round of the 2010/11 English Premiership season, a panel of Sport24 tipsters have a crack at predicting the results – do it yourself, if you like, and see how your scoreboard compares with ours in the report-back a week later.

Three precious points are given for an entirely correct score-line, and one for right result.

Compiled by Rob Houwing (the champion last season but a Newcastle supporter for his sins), the others are colleagues Garrin Lambley (very Everton-partial), David Brooke (Manchester United) and Dominic Valentine (Liverpool).

We occasionally invite guest tipsters; here we give a maiden opportunity to new Sport24 staffer HERMAN MOSTERT, who favours Chelsea, to show whether he can handle the searing heat in the Footy Tips kitchen ...

THE PRIME ATTRACTION

CHELSEA v MANCHESTER CITY
Sunday, 18:00

There’s a lot at stake in this match, despite both protagonists all but being out of the title race. Visitors City lie third, two points ahead of fourth-placed Chelsea (who have a game in hand), so the game is massive in a Champions League context for next season. And for the fading champions there is also the small matter of revenge: the blue Mancs beat them in both Premiership encounters last season, 4-2 at Stamford Bridge and 2-1 at home. The London game, of course, was marked by the high-profile non-handshake between John Terry and Wayne Bridge after their little “love interest” dispute. Both teams enter this one off wins in the last round, so that adds to the appeal. Most of us back Chelsea on their favourite paddock.

Rob: Chelsea 2 Manchester City 1
Garrin: 1-1
David: 3-2
Dominic: 2-1
Guest Herman Mostert: 2-1
Last season: 2-4

THE GRUDGE MATCH

TOTTENHAM v WEST HAM
Saturday, 14:45

There’s more than just the obvious London derby factor between clubs with long and often distinguished histories – this pits the team who won tenancy of the Olympic Stadium after 2012 (Hammers) against those who sought it and failed. And this is also a key encounter for both teams, at different ends of the table. Spurs are seeking a Champions League slot, while West Ham remain in the thick of the multi-team relegation scrap. A gut feel tells me the visitors will rise for the challenge and steal a draw! But I have no allies in that belief.

Rob: Tottenham 2 West Ham 2
Garrin: 2-1
David: 2-0
Dominic: 2-0
Guest Herman Mostert: 2-1
Last season: 2-0

THE DESPERATE DUEL

WEST BROM v ARSENAL
Saturday, 17:00

It’s not often that you would term the Gunners desperate, but that must be a fairly common emotion at the Emirates Stadium right now, as they are surrendering silverware opportunities like acorns tumbling and smashing to pieces off an oak tree. Last chance for them in 2010/11 is to pip Manchester United to the Premiership, as they are only three points adrift with a game in hand. But are they losing their “bottle” and lustre in late season? I’m beginning to wonder, hence my belief – again, unsupported! – that the Baggies will grind out a home draw in their grim quest, by contrast, to stave off the drop.

Rob: West Brom 0 Arsenal 0
Garrin: 0-2
David: 1-2
Dominic: 1-2
Guest Herman Mostert: 2-3

LEADERBOARD

Not an awful lot of movement on the leaderboard (heard that one before?) as we all erred on the side of mediocrity in the last round of fixtures a fortnight back. Yours truly is still gnawing away at stubborn leader Dominic, making up a mighty one point last time out, but yes, unless that gnawing can turn to something more bite-sized soon, Dom will seemingly hang in there to the season’s finish. Dave had the best round of all of us, netting seven points to consolidate his hold on third. Garrin? He seems to be sending his tips whilst attached to a life support system ... can anyone feel a pulse?

209 Dominic (4 points in last round)
202 Rob (5)
186 David (7)
169 Garrin (5)
