'Expert' UK footy tips

Cape Town - Each round of the 2010/11 English Premiership season, a panel of Sport24 tipsters have a crack at predicting the results – do it yourself, if you like, and see how your scoreboard compares with ours in the report-back a week later.

Three precious points are given for an entirely correct scoreline, and one for right result.

Compiled by Rob Houwing (the champion last season but a Newcastle supporter for his sins), the others are colleagues Garrin Lambley (very Everton-partial), David Brooke (Manchester United), Raymond Kilfoil (Tottenham) and a newcomer in Dominic Valentine (Liverpool).

We occasionally invite guest tipsters; watch this space.

THE PRIME ATTRACTION

CHELSEA v SUNDERLAND
Sunday, 18:10

This was an incredible, nine-goal affair last season ... only not too many of them went the visiting Black Cats’ way (er, just two of them in fact). Chelsea’s magnificent seven came included two strikes each from Nicolas Anelka and Frank Lampard, while the Sunderland “consolation” was a goal apiece to Messrs Zenden and Bent. Mindful of that result, you would expect the north-east club to be a tad more resilient at the Bridge this time – especially as they are draw specialists this season! But the Blues machine keeps on rollin’, and most of us still have them winning effortlessly enough. Garrin sees it notably closer ...

Rob: Chelsea 3 Sunderland 0
Garrin: 1-0
Raymond: 3-1
David: 4-0
Dominic: 3-1
Last season: 7-2

THE GRUDGE MATCH

EVERTON v ARSENAL
Sunday, 16:00

Two famous names in British football ... but that’s not the only reason this affair gets grudge billing. When the teams met in the corresponding fixture last campaign, it was the opening day and the Toffees were caught horribly cold at Goodison Park – they were stuffed 6-1! David Moyes could only mutter through clenched teeth afterwards: “You deal with it and you move on.” Um, quite. So what price Everton getting revenge on Sunday? They have stabilised to 12th after another wretched start, and ever-loyal Garrin has them sharing the spoils, along with David. But the rest of us see the slick Gunners doing just enough to win it, even if there are lingering doubts about their “bottle” at times and their most recent form is confusing: home loss to Newcastle and away win at Wolves.

Rob: Everton 0 Arsenal 1
Garrin: 1-1
Raymond: 1-2
David: 1-1
Dominic: 1-2
Last season: 1-6

THE DESPERATE DUEL

WOLVES v BOLTON
Saturday, 17:00

Wolves find themselves in deep trouble at the moment: now only a tenuous point ahead of bottom-placed West Ham, who have made up a wee bit of ground with a brace of spirited draws. Mind you, their situation is deceptive to some degree: they come off particularly tough fixtures against Manchester United (they only lost it 2-1 very late at Old Trafford) and Arsenal (0-2). Some pundits feel the hard-tackling men from Molineux are better than their situation suggests. So now they must prove that, as their entertain Bolton. It won’t be easy because the Trotters find themselves a lofty sixth right now, but I fancy a draw ... and that’s the majority gut feel.

Rob: Wolves 0 Bolton 0
Garrin: 2-1
Raymond: 1-1
David: 0-1
Dominic: 1-1
Last season: 2-1

LEADERBOARD

No, our scores weren’t as impressive as they may look on paper ... it was a double round! Still, Garrin was the big mover with best tally of 18 points after a busy week, although he is still curtailed to second from bottom. Not Ray’s finest spell as he loses the leadership to the ever-ambitious yours truly and Dom slips into solo second. I plan to be first, of course, to lift my bat for the century ...

91 Rob (15 points last week
89 Dominic (13)
87 Raymond (10)
78 Garrin (18)
71 David (11)
