Cape Town - Each round of the 2010/11 English Premiership season, a panel of Sport24 tipsters have a crack at predicting the results – do it yourself, if you like, and see how your scoreboard compares with ours in the report-back a week later.

Three precious points are given for an entirely correct scoreline, and one for right result.

Compiled by Rob Houwing (the champion last season but a Newcastle supporter for his sins), the others are colleagues Garrin Lambley (very Everton-partial), David Brooke (Manchester United), Raymond Kilfoil (Tottenham) and a newcomer in Dominic Valentine (Liverpool).

We occasionally invite guest tipsters; this week Proteas bowling coach VINCENT BARNES, a former pro footballer for Battswood and diehard Manchester City fan, does the honours.

THE PRIME ATTRACTION

MANCHESTER UNITED v LIVERPOOL
Sunday, 14:30

Ray makes himself incredibly “popular” with Liverpool fans for his doom-laden scenario for them in Sunday’s big crunch! The rest of us are a little kinder, although sentiment still massively favours the Red Devils – only Garrin has the visitors nicking a point. In last season’s equivalent tussle in March, ‘Pool promisingly went ahead via Fernando Torres’s wonderful header, but then United struck back through Wayne Rooney and the full house was sealed when Park Ji-sung netted his own diving header. Both teams badly need to win if they are to stay within touch of imperious pace-setters Chelsea, but I fancy United will make up for the Champions League 0-0 anti-climax against Rangers at Old Trafford.

Rob: Manchester United 2 Liverpool 0
Garrin: 1-1
Raymond: 4-1
David: 2-1
Dominic: 2-1
Guest Vincent Barnes: 2-0
Last season: 2-1

THE GRUDGE MATCH

SUNDERLAND v ARSENAL
Saturday, 18:30

Here’s another of those games where an uncompromising home outfit will probably try to hassle and muscle the Gunners out of the game – mindful of Arsenal’s sexy 6-0 midweek win in the Champions League! But do the Black Cats have the quality to actually deny the high-tempo visitors? I suspect not, so I’ve taken the 1-0 route for Arsene Wenger’s troops. Others see a wider margin, while Garrin warms some hearts at the Stadium of Light with his 1-1 forecast. Still, I gave this game “grudge” status because of the London club’s less-than-fond memories of last season’s fixture: Sunderland shocked them 1-0 through a fortuitous Darren Bent goal after Arsenal had bossed the game but lacked finishing finesse. They don’t seem to right now …

Rob: Sunderland 0 Arsenal 1
Garrin: 1-1
Raymond: 0-3
David: 1-2
Dominic: 1-2
Guest Vincent Barnes: 0-2
Last season: 1-0

THE DESPERATE DUEL

STOKE v WEST HAM
Saturday, 13:45

Yes, this is the proverbial grim scrap, what with the Hammers rooted to the basement and with a zero points haul after four matches, and Stoke only two slots higher after breaking their duck with a late win against Aston Villa on Monday night. The Potters are at home again, which helps, but I have a sneaky feeling (yes, one of those) that the visitors will earn a share of the spoils here. Still, I’m alone in that view. And maybe I should have noted last season’s outcome when James Beattie bagged a double in a 2-1 win. But he’s on Rangers’ books now, of course …

Rob: Stoke 1 West Ham 1
Garrin: 2-1
Raymond: 2-0
David: 1-0
Dominic: 2-1
Guest Vincent Barnes: 2-1
Last season: 2-1

LEADERBOARD

Ever humble, I suggested to the rest of the troops this week that, as the season settled down, normal service was resuming at the top of the Footy Tips ladder … what with yours truly seizing the lead after a productive last weekend. My theory was greeted, strangely, with no special lustre. Ah, well. But my 13 points was a good shot in the arm, all the same, in a week when seven seemed a more popular tally …

35 Rob (13 points last week)
32 Garrin (9)
32 Dominic (7)
27 Raymond (7)
23 David (7)
