Cape Town - It’s back … and we’ve freshened the format a little.
Each round of the 2010/11 English Premiership season, a panel of Sport24 tipsters have a crack at predicting the results – do it yourself, if you like, and see how your scoreboard compares with ours in the report-back a week later.
Three precious points are given for an entirely correct scoreline, and one for right result.
Compiled by Rob Houwing (the bursting-with-pride champion last season but a Newcastle supporter for his sins), the others are colleagues Garrin Lambley (very Everton-partial), David Brooke (Manchester United), Raymond Kilfoil (Tottenham) and a newcomer in Dominic Valentine (Liverpool).
We will have occasional guest tipsters. This week we’ve invited back an old pal, GEORGE “Andy Carroll” DEARNALEY, the big former Bafana Bafana and AmaZulu striker, to nod in a few accurate predictions … or possibly blaze ‘em well over the bar?
THE PRIME ATTRACTION
SUNDERLAND v MANCHESTER CITY

Huh? Is the best he can come up with for top billing? I know, that’s what you’re thinking. But consider my predicament in a week where strangely few fixtures really jump out for true appeal: for example, free-scoring champions Chelsea host pointless Stoke, while Manchester United entertain similarly barren West Ham. So this could be a trickier one for “big club” City, so impressive in trouncing Liverpool on Monday night but not yet proven -- by any means! -- away from home. The Black Cats have had an innocuous start to the campaign so probably eye a morale-boosting result at the Stadium of Light. Three of us fancy the 1-1 outcome (same as last season) although Dave disagrees rather violently …

THE GRUDGE MATCH
BLACKBURN v ARSENAL

Rather like South African provincial rugby, there is this image in English football of a “toof” north and “softie” south! The phenomenon certainly raises its head annually when the silky but arguably lightweight Gunners make the haul to Lancashire to face ankle-bashing Blackburn. Arsene Wenger is often out of his chair at Ewood Park, remonstrating at refs to better protect his precocious babes in the face of crunching challenges. It is a venue where the Arse tend not to prosper consistently, and the heat on Saturday’s game is turned up a tad by what happened last season: 2-1 to the less fancied hosts. That said, most of us fancy Arsenal returning to London with a full house this time.

THE DESPERATE DUEL
TOTTENHAM v WIGAN

Sorry to drag you into this, Spurs, because you are more than half decent and finally nailed down prestigious Champions League-proper status in midweek. But this is certainly a desperate outing for Wigan, who have been absolutely lamentable in early season, with successive 0-4 and 0-6 defeats at home and now facing a difficult first game on the road. There’s an assortment of predictions, all in favour of Tottenham, and that’s not surprising when you contemplate last season’s outcome at White Hart Lane: 9-1. Yes, that was the day Jermain Defoe slammed in five just for himself. I’ve gone a pretty conservative 2-0 route: surely there can’t be hatfuls EVERY day? C’mon Wigan, tighten up a tad for me …

The impertinence of youth! Our new boy on the Footy Tips block, Dominic, has had the temerity to claim sole leadership after two rounds. Can the rookie stay fit, mentally strong etc for the long haul? He-he, we shall see. To his credit, David has not allowed his recent engagement to dull his flutter focus too much and lies a close second. Garrin? A week to forget. But hey, we all have ‘em.
