Carrick out of Swiss clash

London - Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick has pulled out of the England squad for the Euro 2016 qualifier against Switzerland at Wembley on Tuesday.

England are seeking a win which would put them top of Group E but must do without Carrick, an unused substitute in Saturday's 6-0 away rout of minnow San Marino.

"@ManUtd midfielder @carras16 has withdrawn from the #3Lions squad due to injury and will return to his club," England wrote on Twitter.

However, the exact nature of the 34-year-old's injury was not disclosed.

The 33-times capped Carrick has not played for England since March's draw in Italy and, as a result, has missed the last three matches.

United play bitter rivals Liverpool in the Premier League on Saturday.

No! I think the smart thing to do is start again with a younger skipper ...

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
