Cape Town - Chelsea's prolific striker Diego Costa has revealed why he opted against joining Brendan Rodgers at Anfield while still playing at Atletico Madrid.
The Spanish international joined Chelsea at the start of the current season in £32 million move from Atletico Madrid.
However, the player has now revealed that he turned down the advances of Liverpool in 2013, according to the Daily Mirror.
“I was close to leaving Atletico,” said Costa.
“Liverpool are a great team, but after fighting so hard and overcoming difficulties to get my place at Atletico, how could I leave?
“I thought it was very important to keep growing with Atletico and to play there for many years.”
Costa decided against joining the Reds and instead renewed his deal with Atletico, who doubled his wages, before a move to Chelsea to link up with Jose Mourinho was too hard to resist.
Costa has been a star for Chelsea's English Premiership leading side, where he has scored 17 league goals in his debut season.
