Liverpool - Bafana Bafana and Everton midfielder, Steven Pienaar, has been charged with driving under the influence during the early hours of Sunday morning.

The Everton star was on his way home after celebrating the Toffees’ 3-1 win over Manchester United, in which Pienaar played a starring role, when police arrested the 27-year-old in the Liverpool city centre after he failed to comply with a traffic signal.

Pienaar will appear in court next month.

A police spokesperson told the Liverpool Echo: “Merseyside Police can confirm that a 27-year-old man has been charged with drunk driving and failure to comply with a traffic sign.

“He was arrested in the early hours of Sunday morning and charged later that day.

“Steven Pienaar from Woolton will appear at Liverpool City Magistrates Court on March 9, 2010.”

The South African also had a brush with the law in October 2008, when he was quizzed by police after an alleged assault in the Sefton Park area, but no charges were ever brought against the player.
