Cape Town - Southampton executive director Les Reed is optimistic that reported Manchester United target Nathaniel Clyne will sign on at St Mary's.
The 24-year-old right-back has just over 12 months left on his current deal with the Saints and there have been suggestions that United will make a move for him in the off-season.
Red Devils boss Louis van Gaal is expected to overhaul his backline during the upcoming transfer window and has made signing a recognised right-back a priority, with winger Antonio Valencia filling that position this season.
However, Reed has revealed that initial discussions have taken place with Clyne and is confident that the England international will end up committing his future to Ronald Koeman's side.
He told talkSPORT: "We're in constant communication. These contract negotiations are never just one meeting where everything is done and sorted out.
"You have to bear in mind, especially with Nathaniel, that we want him to focus on the last few games of the season. That's why you'll get players saying: 'Let's wait until the end of the season.'
"That's quite normal, and he's very happy. He's managed to force himself into the England squad and is showcasing his talents.
"I'd be very surprised if there wasn't speculation about him, but at the moment the signs are good."
