Chelsea to shed Ballack, Cole

2010-06-09 12:53

London - Germany captain Michael Ballack and England midfielder Joe Cole are to be released on free transfers by Chelsea, British media reported on Wednesday, shortly before the start of the Soccer World Cup.

Ballack, 33, has been ruled out of the tournament with an ankle injury but Cole has played himself back into contention for Fabio Capello's England side despite being marginalised at Stamford Bridge under Carlo Ancelotti.

Brazilian Juliano Belletti is also expected to leave the London club next month, media said.

Tottenham Hotspur are among the clubs who have expressed an interest in Cole while Ballack was initially offered a new one-year deal but wanted two years, according to reports.

Ballack is drawing interest from German side Schalke 04 as well as wealthy clubs in Dubai, the Guardian reported.

The players are due to be released when their contracts expire at the end of the month.

All the best to Michael Ballack & Joe Cole, they'll be alright :) It's always sad when pple have 2 leave :(

I never rated Ballack at Chelsea, he did not really fit in. Joe Cole can come to United any day, we wont let him rot away like at Chelsea did.

It's a poor decision from the club to release those 3 players. Sure Belletti probably isn't starting 11 material but he's a decent player to have around when injury crisis happens, he gives the squad a bit more depth in my opinion. As for Joe Cole - ridiculous management from Chelsea, I dont know what they're thinking to let Joe leave, let alone leave for free. Maybe it'll cost them 30K more to sign him on a new contract, but what will it cost the club to purchase another wing / att mid player of Cole's calibre ?? 25, 30 Million ?? I dont know what they're doing - I'm not sure they do either And lastly, Ballack. What the hell are Chelsea playing at? Ballack is an awesome player to have in your squad, gives us good midfield depth and is a good ball-winning midfielder. These players have to be replaced now - and at what cost I ask? Why chelsea why??!!!

I am not a Chelsea Fan AT all. Michael Ballack is a great player did not fit in well in the Chelsea outfit. Joe Cole was on the bench and that SAD what a solid player Any coach that cannot see that is an IDIOT who ever gets him is lucky

ball lack is good riddence . M glad Chelski are getting rid of dead wood like him. VERY overated & Germany will also not miss him in the SWC .On his salary they could have had 2 or 3 players in that position.Sad to see joe cole go though.

What is a free transfer? Does it mean no club wants to buy them? They will however want big wages every week from who ever accommodates them in their team. Maybe a champions league team with money to spare to get into the premier league, with these class players?

  • lebo - 2010-06-09 15:30

they just overrrated overpaid western hyped football players

  • south gooner - 2010-06-09 15:38

    Joe most welcome at Arsenal

  • Julius - 2010-06-09 15:47

Sad to see Ballack go, what a great player, and Joe Cole aswell, but I think its about time, soccer is not about spending a life-time at one club. I see Cole playing well at Spurs!!! But still Chelsea will kick butt.

  • dereksmethurst - 2010-06-09 16:11

Chelsea to shed Ballack, Cole - the author has it the wrong way around - they rejected the terms offered and obviously had better terms offered from elsewhere

  • A Question: - 2010-06-09 17:15

Just a quick question because i cant seem to remember when was the last time Ballack actually REALLY did something that proved that he is Great. I really cant. So the question is; Is Ballack a GREAT?

  • sean @ chillieboy - 2010-06-09 18:34

You clearly know nothing about soccer ! Ballack is like a John Smit in rugby ! You need a player like him in the team and why was he mostly in the first team when he wasn`t injured ? I reckon he has atleast a year or two left in him !

  • HAHA - 2010-06-10 15:32

well ballack is an idiot. when united wanted him he went to chelsea. and look at him now. unemployed. some one please give him a spur application form. maybe he's a better waiter then footballer. HAHA

The Abramovich's business model is not sustainable, even he knows it. Only cheap shots like Essien will stay. You cannot keep on buyin em trophies. The mercenaries are demanding more moola. So, to take control of the expenses, reduce the payroll. Our trophy is comin back home next season, u'll c.
