Cape Town - Sport24 has looked at the midfield generals from the five biggest clubs in the EPL to determine who rules the roost.

Many pundits agree, control the midfield and you will control the game but who rises to the top in the race to be the very best midfielder in the English Premiership.

The contenders:

Darren Fletcher - Manchester United

Yaya Toure - Manchester City

Cesc Fabregas- Chelsea

Jack Wilshere - Arsenal

Steven Gerrard - Liverpool

The areas of focus:

The five candidates were judged on the number of goals scores, key passes, total number of shots as well as their shot accuracy.

The winner:

Fans of the English Premiership may well be surprised that it is not Cesc Fabregas who walks away with tag of "Best EPL midfielder" after an impressive return to the game in England. The winner, according to the numbers, is none other than Yaya Toure.

Toure, one of the world's very best, has once again proven he is the man to beat in the middle of the park. He leads the stats in pass completion, total shots and total forward passes.
