Benni out in the cold

Johannesburg - Benni McCarthy and West Ham United have finally parted company after the striker's contract was terminated by mutual consent.

South Africa's leading scorer endured a horrid spell at Upton Park, where he was fined for not reaching weight targets more than once.

The 33-year-old made just 14 appearances for the Hammers since joining from Blackburn and leaves the club without having found the back of the net.

A statement on their official website read: "West Ham United have mutually agreed with Benni McCarthy to part company with immediate effect.

"The club would like to wish Benni the best for the future."

McCarthy was left out of the Hammers' 25-man Premier League squad for the second half of this season following the arrival of Robbie Keane and Demba Ba to Upton Park.
