Benni out in the cold

2011-04-13 08:37

Johannesburg - Benni McCarthy and West Ham United have finally parted company after the striker's contract was terminated by mutual consent.

South Africa's leading scorer endured a horrid spell at Upton Park, where he was fined for not reaching weight targets more than once.

The 33-year-old made just 14 appearances for the Hammers since joining from Blackburn and leaves the club without having found the back of the net.

A statement on their official website read: "West Ham United have mutually agreed with Benni McCarthy to part company with immediate effect.

"The club would like to wish Benni the best for the future."

McCarthy was left out of the Hammers' 25-man Premier League squad for the second half of this season following the arrival of Robbie Keane and Demba Ba to Upton Park.

I think Kaizer Chiefs will be happy to sign you up now that they are really struggling to find back of the net.

      Bratt - 2011-04-13 09:22

given your reasoning, how exactly do you think Benni would help?

      rtmolobela - 2011-04-13 09:22

what will be the point he can't score goal period.

Benni 'Mafuta'Carthy- shame guys, maybe he has an over active thyroid or he's probably just big boned. In SA you can sue for discrimination for losing your job for being overweight!

      Galrilion - 2011-04-13 13:05

Not if you're a professional sportsman you can't.

      Albo - 2011-04-13 15:50

  • Jerome - 2011-04-13 09:26

Bettter striker than any other produced currently, and he is coloured. So stop the hating,he did what he had to do in his prime. Very rich young man too..

      Tiwonge - 2011-04-13 09:42

True mate. If he were black (in the SA context) there wouldn't have been a fuss. I have seen underperforming black players being begged to represent their team. I am a so-called coloured too.

      L - 2011-04-13 11:10

point Jerome, people pretend as if they do not do mistakes. jealous. And shame he made peace with everybody, you are the ones holding grudges and that hatred will not benefit you guys

Are you Benny's brother Jerome? You sound like it especially with a stupid comment about being coloured

      Tman1 - 2011-04-13 16:45

Very true Jerome he is still the Countries top goal scorer whether we like him or not? He is the only Mzantsi player 2 have won UEFA, The only Mzantsi player 2 score 4 goals in a single game. The only mzantsi player to win top goal scorer award in CAF, The only mzantsi Striker who have won Top goal scorer award in Europe. no one else and there's no one is going to break these records anytime soon. Lastly all soccer players they have to retire at some point in time he wont be the 1st and wont be the last either but atleast he played his football at the highest level and proved himself against the best. Surely he is still in the game for the love of it not because of money. Great footballer which is why we are still talking about him even when he is down. We should be talking about Serero's but because of what benni has done in his career no one from mzantsi can do it anytime soon.

Jerome your comment is true to a point buddy, The state of SA football is very poor to say the least however i doubt race has got anything to do with it. For an example i believe a number of Ajax players deserve to be in the first team however to reasons unknown to me they are not. a prime example would Thulani S. who is playing beatiful football and currently the Best midfield in SA by a mile. yet parker who is a second team player for his club gets the nod.

      Paul - 2011-04-13 22:11

Typical of us lame ass couch potatoes discussing other people, to the fans of PSL teams arguing about who will do what, get a life PSL is k*k ball none of the teams even play SA style ball!!! and this is perpetuated by the fact that everyone is commenting on a player based in Europe!!! To Benni, whatever you decide to do we (real soccer fans) will support you, bring daai pap bek terug huis toe... lol

  • Mukasa - 2011-04-13 09:33

He deserve that coz he disapointed his country. He wil end up here in our first divison teams nt our PSL "never' . Other players must take a good example.

  • Merle - 2011-04-13 09:37

Amazulu - get him here fast and then you will start scoring goals. Then ask the Sharks fitness guru to get him fit and he will be a great asset to Amazulu and SA. Who knows, maybe he will score goals for Bafana Bafana again?

Says a lot for his lack of moral fibre that he waddles off with a fat back pocket from the club. Hopefullt no other English club will take him, nor in SA for that matter.

  • Jerome - 2011-04-13 10:07

Shame to say this to all the haters, he owns a soccer team in SA, he made over 30million rand in tranfers fees since leaving SA. He has been criticized by you haters. He has so many properties in Cpt, Spain and The Uk. So where did the likes of Steve Lekeolela and up,coz he got the same opportunity. Without BEE..it pays if you work hard and have self believe no matter the circumstances.

      RobinHood - 2011-04-13 11:03

He is still fat, whatever you say

      myjdjames - 2011-04-13 12:38

and a further £1.5-million (R16-million) for terminating his W.HAM contract...

      Cassels Madingwane - 2011-04-13 15:21

Funny you have to compare him with Lekolea, why not with Lucas Radebe or somebody like that. You're inferiority complex can make this a race issue. He has achieved a lot make no mistake but he made his bed and he should lie on it! You don't get a talent like his and spoil it the way he did. What he did to South African supporters, less said the better! HE IS FAT!!!

      Albo - 2011-04-13 15:54

Have you forgotten about the numerous times he turned his back on SA?? I think he was out purchasing those properties when the country was in bad need of his skill. As of today, F**k Benni - HE IS FAT!!

His record as a player speaks for itself. He just lacked wisdom and decision making when it mattered. I only hope he has enough money to leave on. He is welcome to come at Supersport United - we are in the habit of ressurecting forgotten heroes/stars.

  • Kaapie - 2011-04-13 10:20

While he is not my favorite character, he made it in top flite soccer for a long time, played Uefa champions league, a lot better than some of our other exports that went overseas and made the bench for their clubs. he did think he was the greater than the sport and has paid the price. Frankly, I think he has to retire quietely.

  • Matsuka - 2011-04-13 11:36

know what really pee's me off? It's when South Africans say period at the end of a sentence. In South Africa we say period when we refer to a usually regular span of time that occurs every month in a woman's reproductive system to flush itself out. Makes absolutely no sense sticking that at the end of a sentence. If our wonderful friends are attempting to imitate the Americans they should bear in mind the Great Leader Malema's disdain for fake American accents. We don't wanna make Juli-arse Mal-Enema throw a hammer out of the cot do we? Enough said! FULL STOP! Oh yeah, who actually cares about Benni MacDonalds anyway???

  • rimmoah - 2011-04-13 11:58

  • Rajen - 2011-04-13 12:00

Benni, its never too late to prove all these green eyed monsters wrong by making a success of your life. I doubt any of these guys commenting here have achieved as much as you have. Just go on and do the right thing and the best that you can. As a South African, I have been proud of you achievements over the years. Unfortunately we can't all be "Mr Popular" and you will have to live with the decisions you made in the past but it never to late to do the right thing. Good luck.

      Kubes - 2011-04-13 12:41

Sundowns must be sweating for his signature. That's the club who wants to buy every player who has failed in Europe. Waste of money. Where is youth development, maSandawana? There are a lot expensive under-achievers there. Comrade Motsepe, please save your hard earned money!

      mrmogoswane - 2011-04-13 15:54

Bennie failed? the dude has won the champion league boss, not even you're precious "steven pienaar" can say that. not SA player has "Jose Mourinho" singing praises about them except this guy. all you haters go "suck a D" in my books he is the best there ever was in SA

no way benni's out in the cold. best striker sa ever produced and the only holder of a champs league winners medal. the man didn't wanna play for bafana, get over it. he is 33 yrs and that is a fair age for a football player to retire. made a truck load of money along the way so he'll be fine. no other sa footballer can including ru can boast the medals benni has achieved. his talent was definitly not wasted.

  • Tman1 - 2011-04-13 16:54

Yes he is still fat but Rich and he has achieved a lot at the biggest stage not just PSL. he is well known and respected by other top players in the world. well recognised as Mzantsi's all time top goal scorer and one of the best footballer fram Africa. He has achieved what the rest of mzantsi players only dream about. Period.

  • Paul - 2011-04-13 22:35

To everyone with opinions about the man, walk a mile in his shoes and then pass a comment, if any of you haters wana ask who's soccer d*ck is the biggest and through in a few names like Lucas and other black stars?? Benni's got the drop on all you fools HE HAS A CHAMPIONS LEAGUE WINNERS MEDAL!!! even Skilo doesn't have one so according to achievements he has over achieved. About Bafana Bafana, there alot going on behind the scene that SA soccer fans don't know, i.e. there are some very jealous and destructive people in the Bafana Bafana camp that go around whispering race issue's in players ears turning us against each other e.g. black against colored. Have any of you asked why is it that the majority of players abroad are coloreds but not in the SA team? The truth is that we have some selfish people that put their own agendas ahead of the nations.
