'Benni loss would be a blow'

Johannesburg - Benni McCarthy's Blackburn team-mate Michel Salgado believes it will be a huge loss for the club if the striker departs during the January transfer window.

The Bafana Bafana star's agent, Ivan Modia, revealed that three Premier League sides are eager to snap up the hitman, along with a host of European outfits.

And with the World Cup approaching, South Africa's top scorer is determined to get more game time under his belt - something he may only gain away from Ewood Park.

After watching McCarthy net the opener in a 1-1 draw with Wigan and come ever so close to handing them the winner with a superb overhead kick on Saturday, Salgado wants Benni to stay.

"Benni is a top quality player, especially when David Dunn is injured. If Benni wasn't with us it would be a big loss for us," he said.

"He's a man who can keep the ball. He's a key player - everyone needs them in their team and he is one. We need him to stay here in January. We are a team that has more than we are showing at present and Benni can help us do that."

There have been many criticisms of McCarthy, especially in his homeland, but Salgado rates his team-mate very highly.

"I can see he has top quality. He gives teams something different and he has great quality," he added.

"When you see him play or train, you know you are watching a key player. We have to help him play as well as he can, get his confidence back and play regularly for Blackburn. That's what we need."
