Johannesburg - Benni McCarthy sustained a knee injury on his debut for West Ham United on Saturday.
The Bafana Bafana striker failed to come out for the second half after receiving constant treatment on his left knee during the last 15 minutes of the first half, as the Hammers went down 2-1 to Burnley, who defended superbly to bolster their chances of avoiding relegation.
McCarthy’s injury will be assessed this week and he will be hoping it's nothing serious that could harm his chances of making Carlos Alberto Parreira’s final World Cup squad.
West Ham manager Gianfranco Zola paid tribute to his trio of debut forwards, including McCarthy, who had two good chances in the first period before being withdrawn with a knee injury.
Zola added: “I thought Benni tried very hard and had an opportunity then he had a problem with his knee. I thought Mido was excellent and Ilan also came on and scored, so that is encouraging.”
