Benitez mum over Reds future

2010-05-01 13:41

Liverpool - Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez remained tight-lipped on Saturday on his long-term future at Anfield ahead of his side's Premiership clash with Chelsea.

Benitez has been strongly linked with a move to Juventus, with several reports indicating the Italian giants are ready to step in with an offer, but the Spaniard insists his focus is only on Sunday's game.

"At the moment I can't talk about the future long-term," he said in quotes reported by The Sun. "I know the future clearly and it is Chelsea on Sunday."

Benitez said during the week that the Merseyside club do not have the financial muscle to challenge in the Premiership, and revealed he had not been given any guarantees from the board that money would be available in the summer.

Co-owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett officially put Liverpool up for sale a fortnight ago having admitted they had taken the club as far as they could.

Benitez also revealed he had turned down "massive offers" to leave Liverpool, and admitted fan power was key to those decisions.

"I have had massive offers over the last year and I decided to stay because of the fans," he added in The Star.

"Those fans are amazing. If I am here, it is because of them. They are wonderful supporters.

"The fans are the main thing, the best thing that the club has, and for one year I have been working hard, trying to do my best."

If there is a coach who has outlived his shelflife it is Rafa, watching Liverpool lose to Arsenal, ManU, and Chelsea in similar fashion, I strongly believe that Liverpool have suffered and been embarassed enough. Time for change of personnel. Let Rafa go to Juve and Liverpool deserve better. I don't believe that the players are that bad. Deficiency lies on the touch-line. We need better things from Anfield. Tired now!!!!!!

Ronald you obviously don't follow the "Pool", we have much bigger problems than Rafa, shocking season of injuries again, useless Yankee owners (lack of funds for one), one off bad season from the best midfielder in the World, none of this can be blamed on Rafa, Liverpool have never panicked and now is defo not the time.

Benitez lacks top end management, leadership, creativity football ideas, diversity and positive thinking. Certain Players also hid or lost their talent under his management. Players are everything toa successfull club. However management is everthing and more. He must be replaced. Only a completely new paradigm shift can help Liverpool. I pray it happens.

  • Wes - 2010-05-03 07:43

I agree with Scouse Bob. How can a Manager who has won two La Liga titles and a UEFA Cup with Valencia as well as the Cup's he won with Liverpool not too mention the players he has signed, how can he all of a sudden be a bad coach?? We have bigger problems than the coach I'm afraid. What disgusts me is how the Yank owners will make a profit when they sell the club even though they have not invested a blue bean of their own money!! That just sickens me!!

The right person for the Liverpool job would be Alex Mcleish the current Birmingham manager or Martin O'Neil from Villa . They are British and Liverpool have only ever performed well under a British manager ( with the exception of Souness ) . Rafa's sense of distraction filters down to the players with accompanying results . Did we throw the game on Sunday ? If so , it is a sad day for Liverpool football club and English football as a whole ..

  • Kube$ - 2010-05-03 09:50

@WES - WTF again bru.. what players did he sign thats so amazing?Lucas Skywalker. And he is going to a league that has lost considerable credibilty over the years, so now he will go there and make things worse. he should go coach Pompey in divsion 1 man....

  • Wes - 2010-05-03 10:55

@ KUBE Mascherano Benayoun Agger Johnson Torres Reina Greek Insua (only cost us 1.5 million) Kuyt Aquilani Lucas Arbeloa Alonso Garcia Should I go on???

  • Wes - 2010-05-03 10:55

  • Kube$ - 2010-05-03 11:28

OMG -dude thats sounds like the worst signings ever, besides Toress, and fact is Torres has been injured , no contingency plan was in place?Dude let it go, he sucks as a manager....

  • MAGEZI - 2010-05-03 12:14

yep,its time for Rafa to go.I cnt take it anymore,Why buy N'GOG in the first place,is he beta than Babel?not at all.Rafa does not have plan B.The team needs strong midfielders to support strikers. Not that ARSENAL,MAN U n CHELSEA are not invincible to POOL.

  • AL @ Wes - 2010-05-03 15:33

HAHAHAHA - that whole list you gave there should`ve only cost 1,5m - barring Torres of course. I hope UTD now picks up Torres for a bargain, you guys can have Berbaflop!!

  • Rush - 2010-05-03 15:58

@Wes , dude reality check . All those players you have mentioned have not added value to the club . It is all well and good to make fun of United but they are second in the league with pretty average players but a great manager and should Wigan pull off the impossible then United will win the league if they beat Stoke , and Liverpool need I remind you is lying sixth behind teams like Spurs , Man City and out of the running for Champions league football . This once proud club is being dragged down by the owners , manager and the players . Gerrard looks set to go as does Torres so what next for Pool ?

  • Wes - 2010-05-03 16:24

Kube The fact that you don't rate Reina says it all... He is the best keeper in the league and has been for some time. You don't win the golden ball 3 times in 4 years and you're crap. Mascherano is the Captain or Argentina... before he joined us he couldn't even get a start in West Ham's first team nevermind the bench. Who should be credited for his success?? RAFA!! Agger was until recently wanted by AC Milan...Should I go on???

  • Never Walk Alone - 2010-05-05 20:26

@Wes - I see you are back again - making a dooooos of yourself ! Like I said before - if we continue with Benitez , Lucas and the likes, as well as dim witted supporters like you - then LFC is in more shite than I can ever imagine !! Go learn about professional football, and what makes a team work - because it is very apparent that you know diddly squat about the game ! I am embarressed that you are a Liverpool supporter and ask that other INFORMED contributors to this forum dont take this moron serious !!! Methinks you could be Benitez and Lucas's love child !!

  • Wes - 2010-05-06 09:09

Never Walk Alone 'Go learn about football' What are you talking about?? All you are doing is giving your opinion as always... You have not once refuted what I have said based on facts!! I mentioned that Benitez has improved the club, we have won trophies while he is the Manager and we have a very good spine in the team which is Reina, Carra, Mascherano, Gerrard and Torres. Do you even know what 'the spine' of the team is?? All you do is harp on about Lucas, Insua, Ngog, etc... every single team has players who are not the finished product yet!! How is Rafa supposed to buy players of quality if he must sell to buy and all he ever does is replace the ones that leave. Torres replaced Belamy. Mascherano replaced Sissoko, Johnson replaced Arbeloa... Babel replaced Garcia... I suggest you bring facts to the table instead of the usual nonsense and insults!!

  • Mark - 2010-05-06 18:26

@ Wes - I think you have once again missed the point of what most people on this forum are commenting about. Benitez got rid of some top class players and replaced them with crap - he had decent money to spend but squandered it on ineffective players (except Torres) I guarantee that if he stays at Liverpool and does get the money he wants to buy players - he will probably f&^%k it up - as he is not astute enough as a manager to work with top class players or has the tactical knowledge to bring out the best in them ! That is what we are afraid of as LFC supporters - that Benitez no longer has what it takes to move Liverpool forward due to his inability to control the dressing room once things go pear shaped. We need new ideas - and a serious shake up and I for one dont believe that Benitez knows how to play positive attacking football - his ideas no longer suit what Liverpool has to achieve for the future. Being knocked out of CL football has probably set this club back by at least 5 years in the goals and aims for the future. I sure hope that our new owners have the bucks to entice Morinhou to Liverpool - as he will get us back on track !!

  • Wes - 2010-05-07 11:18

@ Mark What decent money?? You need to open your eyes mate. I am not for one minute suggesting that Rafa has not made mistakes but he has done more good than harm and deserves more time AND money to improve the squad. Please answer me this question: Did he or didn't he strenghthen the squad over the last year (since last season) By strenghthening the squad I mean signing players and also holding onto your current crop of players. Not signing players in order to replace those that are leaving. When Chelsea, Utd, Man City, Spurs sign players they are signing ADDITIONAL players and not replacing those who have left. A case in point, Ronaldo left for Madrid and Fergie signed Oberton (sp?) Owen, Tosic (sp?) among others. He also tried to sign Benzema but he chose Madrid instead... can you see where I am going with this?? He doesnt ever need to sell in order to buy which is exactly what Rafa has been doing the last 2 years!!

  • Mark - 2010-05-08 13:47

@Wes - Your assesment does not hold water - he got rid of good players (Keane, Bellamy, Alonso etc) and replaced them with crap - If he so called strengthened our squad - as you state - then why are we out of CL , unable to challenge for EPL , and end up 7th on the log. Hell he sure strenghthened our suqad real good for us to over achieve !!!! I dont think he should be given any more time at LFC - as mentioned before his tactics and overall attitude to football smacks of a negative approach ! We need someone who is bold enough to take Liverpool to a higher level PERIOD - I am afraid Benitez does no longer cut it for me - and I bet a lot of other supporters agree.

  • SAGE - 2010-05-09 12:05

RAFA SHUD JUST F@#$%%K OFF! He is now worse than Souness. In terms of a replacement... we need to get rid of the brain damaged owners first and then we must get Guus or Mourinho! Im not a fan so much of the special one,but he has that arrogance that should drive Alex to an overdue grave when we beat MANure UTD! As for the here and now.....GO CHELSEA!

  • Wes - 2010-05-12 15:46

Mark... I suggest you read properly next time... I said he did not strengthen the squad, all he did was replace players who left. That is not strengthening the squad... As for Keane... he is useless... He was club captain at Spurs (when he returned) and yet he couldn't get a game in the starting line up. We made a profit of 20 million pounds on Alonso and he wanted to leave and go back to Spain anyway... Bellamy was sold to fund the Torres deal... We would not have signed him if Bellamy had stayed... By the way, how many goals did Bellamy score for us and in how many games??
