Madrid - Atletico Madrid confirmed the sale of Argentina striker Sergio Aguero to Manchester City on Thursday in a deal believed to be worth £38 million.

"Atletico Madrid and Manchester City have reached an agreement under which the English club has the rights to Sergio Leonel Aguero," said a statement on the Atletico website although the club did not reveal the financial details.

"From now on the Argentine player ceases to be part of our staff. The club thanks him for his services rendered during the five seasons and wishes him luck in his new post."

City announced that 23-year-old Aguero had signed a five-year-contract and that he is likely to be in the squad for this weekend's Dublin Super Cup tournament.

He will wear the No 16 shirt.

Aguero himself had claimed on Wednesday that he had completed his transfer to City.

"I am now a City player. Happy to be in this club and this city. Thanks to all for the welcome and the reception," Aguero wrote on his Twitter account.

The player, who is the son-in-law of Argentina legend Diego Maradona, underwent a medical in Manchester on Wednesday.

He is seen as the answer to City's problems on attack, where Carlos Tevez has reiterated his desire to leave the club.

Aguero's transfer is be City's third signing of the summer following the arrivals of Gael Clichy from Arsenal and Stefan Savic from Partizan Belgrade.
