England eye homegrown coach

London - England are poised to appoint a homegrown coach when the reign of Italy's Fabio Capello comes to an end.

Sir Trevor Brooking, the Football Association's director of development, said on Friday that the mood within the governing body is to have an English manager.

"I think longer term, after Fabio, we'd like to go English," Brooking told the BBC.

"We want to create a spell where we appoint English coaches and Fabio can help us enormously to bridge that gap and help that transition.

"We've got a short-term priority of the (Euro 2012) qualifying games but over the next couple of years the National Football Centre will hopefully be built, and that's going to be the hub site for the future development of English coaches."

Brooking, who was a key member of the FA group that opted to retain the services of Capello when his future was in doubt, said the former AC Milan and Real Madrid coach was as disappointed as everyone else after England's 4-1 humbling at the hands of Germany in the second round of the World Cup.

"We were all stunned at how poor we were," said Brooking. "We reflected on it, as he did. From a pride point of view he was hugely disappointed - but he wanted to try to do better and help rebuild."
