Nasief Morris (Gallo)

Johannesburg - Bafana Bafana coach Joel Santana has made his final selection for this month's Confederations Cup and a few the of players he has chosen to leave out of the 23-man squad to compete in the tournament has come as a huge shock.

Santana spoke this week about the difficult decision he faced in trimming his squad down by axing six players, but the Brazilian seems to have made life even harder for himself by swinging the axe down on unsuspecting victims.

The first being defender Nasief Morris, who plays in the Spanish La Liga and has been hailed as a revelation in the league this season after competing for 90 minutes in almost every game. Morris was the last overseas-based player to join the Bafana camp.

The other five players axed are Siyabonga Nkosi, Masilo Modubi, Moeneeb Josephs, Thulasizwe Mbuyane and Mzuvukile Tom.

The 23-man Bafana Bafana squad is:

Goalkeepers:
Brian Baloyi (Mamelodi Sundowns), Itumeleng Khune (Kaizer Chiefs), Rowen Fernandez (Armenia Bielefeld, Germany)

Defenders: Matthew Booth (Mamelodi Sundowns), Siboniso Gaxa (Mamelodi Sundowns), Morgan Gould (SuperSport United), Tsepo Masilela (Maccabi Haifa, Israel), Aaron Mokoena (Portsmouth, England), Bryce Moon (Panithinikos, Greece), Bongani Khumalo (SuperSport United)

Midfielders:
Lance Davids (SuperSport United), Kagisho Dikgacoi (Golden Arrows), Teko Modise (Orlando Pirates), Steven Pienaar (Everton, England), Macbeth Sibaya (Rubin Kazan, Russia), Siphiwe Tshabalala (Kaizer Chiefs), Benson Mhlongo (Orlando Pirates), Elrio van Heerden (Blackburn Rovers, England), Innocent Mdledle (Orlando Pirates)

Strikers:
Bernard Parker (Red Star Belgrade, Serbia), Katlego Mphela (Mamelodi Sundowns), Thembinkosi Fanteni (Maccabi Haifa, Israel), Katlego Mashego (Orlando Pirates)

Fellow South Africans, lets face reality Joel Santana is not the the one at fault here, as far as i'm concerned he is doing a good job, the ball lies with the boyz, Bafana bafana please make us proud, our country relies on you, You no more boyz now, do what you supposed to do, we cannot afford to keep on changing coaches
Anonymous User6/12/2009 3:26 AM
I dont think Mathew Booth is quick enough to catch these strikers therfor Morris was vital to our cause. Besides Parker and Fanteni the other two strikers are average players not good players.
Wayde Dorkin6/8/2009 11:47 AM
Nassief Morris is a good player but lets be honest, he hasn't always performed for the team so it's not a major loss for us. Im glad to see Josephs out but obviosly Siyabonga Nkosi is underated by our Coach. He is a creative player that we need in attack, even if he is just used as a sub. Lance Davids does not deserve to be in the squad, too lazy and no creativity to deserve a spot in the Bafana midfield. I hope to see Bryce Moon start in the Confed Cup.
Anonymous User6/5/2009 3:54 PM
yep, hes the one who knows what jes doing and we can't all be coaches
Anonymous User6/5/2009 3:01 PM
I think Santana made a big mistake by leaving out Nasief Morries, Siyabonga Nkosi, Dikgang Mabalane and Richard Henyekane. Nasief is one of the best defenders that we have in this country, Siyabonga Nkosi is very creative, and we all know what Dikgang is capable of (ask Chiefs defenders). I'm still battling to understand why the coach has chosen Macbeth Sibaya, Lance Davids, Katlego Mphela, Matthew Booth. Do you honestly believe that Macbeth Sibaya can handle the likes of Xavi, Iniesta? Macbeth does not even know the basics of football e.g. passing the ball.
Anonymous User6/5/2009 2:01 PM
What happens if the cricket or rugby drops 2 coloured/african players (even if they dont perform)? The whole country cries racism. But u havent heard a word from anyone abt the exclusion of 2 very talented coloured players? Josephs is better than 2 of those 3 keepers combined. Not even talking abt Morris who plays 90min every game, rarely makes mistakes and has the experience of playing against world class players in LaLiga and elsewhere. This is just blatant. Wheres the quota system nw, or does that only apply to cricket & rugby?
Singatha6/5/2009 1:46 PM
I think we all new six players were going to be axed which happened. I have a problem with Morris being axed, he is one of the highly displined players I ever seen in the current national team if displine is the problem. Pitso is there to bridge gaps for his favourite players because will be scouts from oversees, this is not the first time to test players and leave the best in crucial games. How can you keep Mdledle ahead of Morris, now they created a midfield position for him, why didn't you pick Doute from Ajax instead of him adding the numbers?

Let us behave as grown-ups and stop these negative criticisms.Santana you are doing good for our S.A. soccer,Keep it up ,you are doing an excellent job.
Anonymous User6/5/2009 11:59 AM
remember a Richardo Katza, that was exposed during a ACN Finals and Pitso was also involve. Bafana's system = 4(c)-17(b)-2(w)=23, no equal representation of the country. DIS LEKKER IN SUID AFRIKA, no accountablity laws even if we loss.

GUDLUCKN SANTANA.BUT I DONT THINK HE MADE A RIGHT CHOICE BY SELECTING KATLEGO MPHELA AHEAD OF HENYAKANE.SIYABANGENA.

Good job so far, Let Santana do what he does and lets play our role being the great fan that we are and cheer our country to victory in the Confed Cup.
Anonymous User6/4/2009 10:56 PM
Being negative won't solve the problem Guys. Well Santana is there to do his Job and he is looking for your respects, support and motivation. We all know that SA hasn't been the good team for some years and that doesn't mean we are failures.SA can do better if we can work together.Well, excluding Morris may be the best move also, same thing applies to Benni. Benni is a top striker that SA should rely on, No matter how much he did disappointed Bafana. The fact remains,He is very special and SA should bare that in mind, You cannot call him to play against teams like Zimbabwe / Botswana, He is always looking for a big challenge and that will pursue him to go far with his career. Imagine if he doesn't score while playing against Botswana, His team my sideline him to the banch saying you are out of form.My point is : Santana will only select those he think will be the best to represent Bafana. Please support Satana for the sake of your Country, the love of football, and motivation for those who are selected. Please take a look to the teams like Brazil by not selecting players like Ronaldinho & Ronaldo. Ask yourself this question, Are they willing to take the lead?
moses morris6/4/2009 8:51 PM
It is not a good team, for my comment satana he was sapos to live nasf morris in the team, aron mokwana is not a good player, and the frant line is imbarasing
Achieve Ubisi6/4/2009 6:36 PM
This is the time where all South Africans should be behind Bafana. As a patriot, i believe that this team has all the ingridients to make an impact on the world stage of soccer. If we all rally behind the team and make sure that the are aware of the fact that they have the full support of the nation, Bafana will not dissapoint us. Its a matter of national pride as we have since it in 1996. All the best to Bafana Bafana and i trust they will make us proud
Thabile Lenry Mdeni6/4/2009 5:28 PM
I think Jole "Mr nose" Santana, Pitso Mosimane and SAFA management are destroying our national soccer team, how can people on earth leave big guns behinde and go for a world war. There is too much jalous and racisim in South Africa, how can u rate Teko Modise as far better player than Steven Pinaar? is it b'coz he is black in complexion or b'coz Modise is playing 4 Dr Khoza?
Anonymous User6/4/2009 4:36 PM
this Katlego Mpela selection smells of Pitso Mosimane. and when it comes to discipline and commitment, they dont come better than Nasief Morris. the least said about baloyi the better.
Thando Mrawu6/4/2009 3:32 PM
Brian Baloyi, Aaron Mokoena,Innocent Mdledle,Katlego Mphela these are four wasted positions nevertheless we have enough amunition to coz a surprize or two by making it to the semiz.Or i'm i too hopeful well its becoz i'll die for ma country sport or what eva.
MMA6/4/2009 2:59 PM
Schocking, shocking, shocking...shocked. The exclusion of Morris in favour of Gould & Khumalo is a huge mistake which will haunt Satane forever...The selection of Boots, or sorry Booth is a good one. Boots has played well for Bafana. With the exception of Mphela and the exclusion of Morris, I think Satane selected the best possible squad we can have in Mzansi. Now the question will be who will make the first eleven.

There's only one way to know the evil colonial-hangover nature of a person, is when they start to air their laundry on platforms such as these. You do not have purpose in life, I will kill and die for my country even beyond defeat. Bafana Bafana and our leadership enjoy the majority support of real S.A. citizens and should not be feint-hearted by cheap critisisms like we see on this platform or any other. A Luta Continua. Siyabangena!
South Africa Supporter Always 6/4/2009 2:30 PM
Santana a joke We as South African supports are always living on the dream that one day Bafana Bafana will one day be a power house of international soccer. Santana including Brian Baloyi has proven that no matter what coach we have in place will always be dictated to by the officals of SAFA. Unfortunately our dream will have to wait a little longer for a strong coach to be put in place to make his own team choices. We will never know if Santana is a good coach or not as his selections are made for him. Good luck boys for the Confed Cup I will be in the stands cheering you on but also knowing that SAFA controls your destinany and is run like the goverment full of back hands and coruption. Bring in Gavin Hunt as coach then we will see a real manager of men.

I TAKE MY HAT OFF FOR SANTANA. MORRIS IS A DISASTER FOR BAFANA, AS TO WHERE HE PLAYS MEANS NOTHING .WE ARE LOOSING SOUTH AFRICAN FLARE BECAUSE OF THIS SO CALLED BIG HEADED INDIVIDUALS .MAYBE AFTER THE CONFED MORE PACKING WILL STILL TAKE PLACE.

Does he even know what football is all about....Naasief left out!!!!OH MY WORD!!!! He needs to see a psychologist and oh my hat Moeneeb as well this guys is basically asking for trouble but u know at the end of the day it all comes to the end just a pity Bafana will not even make it past the first round so the end is near for them!!!
prince moloto 6/4/2009 1:36 PM
To MR Santana and his technical team. whatever that you are doing lets hope that it comes right. i dont undersant how on earth you drop our best defender and still have the likes of Mr mdledle in the team. can someone tell what did MR "mbazo" Mokoena do for Bafana Bafana but people are droped and he is still the. Mbazo is the Weakest link in our defence and he is going to cost us big time.
kabelo6/4/2009 1:34 PM
Santana uyasidlisa! we have 4 defensive midfielders (besides kagiso) who cannot supply quality attacking passes. this guy is really smoking his socks. I'm not going to Orlando anymore!
Anonymous User6/4/2009 1:33 PM
OMW morris out? if i remember correctly, DAVID VILLA said that morris was one of his toughest oppents in LA Liga. And remember Villa is one of the best strikers in the world. How can we blame him for The Axes mistakes? Cant wait to see Torres and Villa walk past SA's useless defence. And please play Moon at RB he is far better than Gaxa and he plays regular CL football! and to the guy that thinks Modise is the best player in SA, i think you forgot about that guy that plays for Everton, thats right Steven Pienaar! Its a joke that our best overseas players are constantly made out to be the bad ones. SA has one of the weakest leagues in the world! Thanx

brain should be out no question about it. the morris saga, well i hope you know what your doing coach.
Anonymous User6/4/2009 1:25 PM
To have Baloyi as a keeper must be the most stupid decision ever taken.Khune is also a useless keeper.Come on Santana wake up - or will you only do so once Iraq has beaten us?
Sipho6/4/2009 1:24 PM
Santana says there's a code of conduct that Morris crossed and he doesn't want to reveal it to the public, that's proffessional & i respect that. It's very difficult to please soccer lovers/ fans, but gents with our negative comments on the coach and some young players are braking their morale and making it difficult for them to focus, i mean really!!! Santana has produced some of the best players in the world such as KAKA and coached the most successful team in Brazil SPFC, he can build a team! He's worked under worse pressure, if you follow Brazilian football you'd know the passion, love and skills that they have for the beautiful game, we don't even come close. Win or Loose im behind Bafana all the way to the 2010,this tournament is a testing ground for our World cup readiness and our boys will swim with the big fish. ola!

I am Chiefs fan but for our coach not to select Henyekane who has scored the same number of goals this season with top goal scorer for the biggest leaque in the world Anelka, is realy upsetting. We are going to be laughing stock from our rugby and cricket fans, they are doing well because they do not take their suppoters for granted.I just hope that the team is going to play not as individuals like they normaly do but as Team. Goodluck whether we like or not, we will be behind you.
Lekesi6/4/2009 1:03 PM
We are a losing nation. The thing that makes us a losing nation is that,we are trying to be other nation. The thing that worries me is that we dont see even one player that plays mzansi style, i'm talking about the likes of Manyambela,Scara Ngobese.Lets be ourselves and we will conquer everything.
Anonymous User6/4/2009 1:03 PM
Guys, lets see what happens. If Bafana really do well in the Confed, then everyone will be praising Santana, if things go bad then we do what we always do, get rid of the coach. This is what has got us into trouble since we won the African Nations and were 15th in the FIFA rankings. We get rid of a couch 1year before 2010, new coach has to build up again, we do bad in 2010, but as always we say lets wait for 2014 and we will show the world. 2013 will come along and we will get rid of the coach and we will get a new one, 1 year before a major tournament. We need to give Santana a chance till 2010, that is the major tournament we are aiming for, not now. No-one gave Jake White or Peter de Villiers a chance with Rugby, so, lets give Santana a chance till 2010.
mpho6/4/2009 1:03 PM
how bafowethu, brian baloyi in moneeb josephs out, mdledle didn't play much at club level.mphela also was injured, Santana,Pitso they must also pack their bags and leave BAFANABAFANA,SAFA aba nagane bo better pls, or else re mo kotsing before the conf cup and world cup.Pls SAFA wake up before its 2 later, we are angry to you guys, you must forget about the support from us the suppoters/fans.

stephens6/4/2009 12:57 PM
I do not like Nasif Morris, but you need experience and players with game time. He has all that. And what is is with these Sundowns players who do not have hearts in the squad? Are you kiddin' me!!!
Magaula Gijima6/4/2009 12:55 PM
I do not hold any brief for any of six guys chopped. But to leave Morris is not only a tragedy but is also a travesty.... Booth is very slow and has been exposed so many times by our local boys. We are in for a whipping. I am not one to criticise coaches but this 1 is in a league of his own. Santana is fired even before we have kicked a ball in the confed. As for Nkosi, I have always thought he was overrated even when he was at Chiefs.
Anonymous User6/4/2009 12:51 PM
This country has the most negative sporting people i have seen on the internet. With rugby and soccer....Not even England lashes out this much as our fans do it seems. Each coach has their own phylosiphies. Pathetic that fans think they know better than people who have been in the coaching business before they were born. No team would be good enough. No coach would be good enough....not with our fans
Anonymous User6/4/2009 12:50 PM

ZWEESTA6/4/2009 12:50 PM
Thats it...SANTANA must go after this. First he leaves the Leaugues leading goal scorer out, then axes the best defender we have in SA. For what...just to keep BOOTH. sies!

Nothing is predactable in a game of football. After all, we are preparing for the 2010 world cup. Morris is a wonderful player but he makes big blunders in the National Team. Santana deserve a chance and should opt for attacking football rather defensive formation.

For crying out loud what in the hell was Santana and Pitso thinking. I mean leaving out Siya Nkosi instead of Mphela, Morris instead of Booth and Tom instead of Mdledle. If I was him I would have my bags packed and ready to go after this tournament because I don't see us doing well on this one. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to make a bafana team since we don't have many best players and Mr Santana and his team have done a serious blunder on one of the easiest things to do in the world.

We are going to be the laughing stock in the coming confed cup because of the brainless Satane(oops Santana)
Thabo6/4/2009 11:07 AM
I dont believe this brazilian what the hell is he thinking.Booth over Morris.

please SAFA, employ a coach that understands S.A. football, this coach is clueless, and to top it off he can't speak a word of english. So how does he communicate with his players. Please employ Ingesund or Barker

Santana has just dropped one of our two best players at the moment. (other one Pienar). I think SAFA must fire this clueless guy and hire Lucas as our coach. Germany, Barcelona and now AC Milan have all proved that you don't need any experience to be a coach at the highest level. In my own little experience of South African sports, i have never seen any national team winning anything while the coach is non-South African.

Santana is leaving after Confederations Cup......
Siyah6/4/2009 10:58 AM
I think the coach made the good choice by axing the six players of which they did not get enough space to show case in their clubs, by the way Brian Baloyi was supposed to be one of the six players.
Mxolisi - BafanaSupporter6/4/2009 10:58 AM
I think the coach made a bad decision by axing Morris, instead he should have axed Mathew Booth since Morris is a versatile player who can also play on the wings. I just want to wish the boys all the best in their last friendly match against Poland. Viva Bafana Bafana Viva! We, the SA soccer loving community are fully behind you. To Santana, pls stop playing your 4-5-1 or 5-4-1 system it doesn't work for us, try the old 4-4-2 system and give Teko Modise a free role, allow Steven Pienaar to play cental position and that should work for the team. Here’s the Winning team and system to play: 1. Rowen (1) (Not Khune – can’t handle crosses & set pieces) 2. Moon (Good with overlapping runs) (2) (Gaxa can be used against tough teams like Spain) 3. Masilela (3) 4. Mokoena (4) 5. Booth (5) 6. Pienaar (6) 7. Dikgacoi / Mhlongo (6) – Can’t play both of them at the same time. No Sibaya here. Coach should stop playing double defensive midfielders. Only one defensive midfielder per game. No 4-5-1 or 5-4-1 system needed. 8. Modise (8) – Allow him free role as well 9. Elrio (10) – Change positions with Modise during the game. Subst(Tshabalala should start on the bench) 10. Parker (9) 11. Mashego (9)

Eish, hard to stay positive with these selections, but let's not give up hope and support our country and pray for some surprises. We need all the help we can get!!
Anonymous User6/4/2009 10:56 AM
wooow
Gerry6/4/2009 10:54 AM
Yaa nee this man does'nt know what he's doing.how can on earth leave a goalleading scorer hanyekane for grab like mphela.ok for we'll see after confed this man is definetely going.
psy46/4/2009 10:52 AM
nkosi & morris (esp the latter) out!!! How did the downs duo of mphela & baloyi make it? sibaya, mhlongo, davids & dikgacoi are playing in the same position, even mokoena can play there... where's the logic here! There's 1 prolific striker in the team - I'm not crying for benni but we should have compensated with an on-form henyekane & I think paulse would give us more than what mphela may! I'm sceptical about the our coaches IQ! I dont think pitso is innocent either!
DADDYKAY6/4/2009 10:51 AM
WHAT!!!!! Aaron Mokwena would kill to play hours that Morris enjoy in Spain.whats happenning here? i can't believe this....morris,khanyeza,henyekane,moeneeb these guys have played their hearts out only to be dropped....i think i get it the more crabby you play the better ur chances..... advice to santana i think you should add bashin mahlangu, hamphery mlwane etc to strengthin your team.
Skillz6/4/2009 10:51 AM
Here we go again! This guy is a clown, how can he drop Morris and Josephs? If we are looking towards the future, is Baloyi part of that? Morris has been superb in Spain, much better than Mokoena, I am not even mentioning the seldom played Booth. He started with Henyekane and now this! He is not doing us proud! At all, he is in it for his own agenda! Santana must go.
Anonymous User6/4/2009 10:49 AM
Well, Mr. Sanatana, what an easy way to "earn" an early retirement! And to SAFA: There are a few u/9, u/10, u/11 & u/12 coaches all around the country who will do a much better job, and who are likely to be a whole lot cheaper than this moron!!!?
Anonymous User6/4/2009 10:49 AM
Glad, Santana chose a team over indivisuals. This kinds of remind me of Jake White just before the world cup when everybody called for his head. South African commentators are always wrong. They are misleading and claim to know better. starting with Marks Mamponyane, they must be fired!
Anonymous User6/4/2009 10:49 AM
I cant believe he dropped a player/defender who play in one of the toughest leagues in the world.
Anonymous User6/4/2009 10:48 AM
Well done Santana, I'll support you all the way. I really believe we'll make the mark. The guys who say Morris is a good defender because he plays in Spain they must go to Spain. Morris is not bad, but he's not a good ball header look at the mistakes he made against Portugal. I'll rather use Booth to head and Mbazo to mark simple. Santana is here to stay, you guys watching too much TV, speak again after CONF cup.
Anonymous User6/4/2009 10:47 AM
I can not believe this really. How do you leave BOOTH and opt for MORRIS. I mean really is it only the hight we luking for? How can you leave BALOYI for MOENEED, i mean BALOYI is old, and we r trying to build the future bafana. YAH NEHHH. We just have to wait and see
Carl de master6/4/2009 10:45 AM
find a new coach and get rid of this popoye,i quit bafana.maybe if he knew english he would explain better.
Anonymous User6/4/2009 10:42 AM
BAFAMBLE YOU WILL FAIL, BECAUSE YOU DO NOT REPRESENT ALL South Africans.
Anonymous User6/4/2009 10:42 AM
SAFA is spending millions on a coach that will bring us nowhere in the Confed Cup. I hope that we will be able to win at least one game (never mind going to the next round).
Anonymous User6/4/2009 10:40 AM
Don't blame Santana, he's never had a clue about SA football anyways. He can't eve speak english but he was employed by the genius SAFA executive! Blame SAFA, who hired him! They hired him to coach SA for 2010 without him ever coaching an international side! What a bunch of stupid morons! Good Luck Santana!
Terence6/4/2009 10:40 AM
Bafana Bafana will never reach the second round of 2009 Confed cup & 2010 world cup...They are a disgrace to South African sport!!
Freedom Ndlovu6/4/2009 10:39 AM
Morris dropping is an excellent call by Santana. He has never done anything positive for Bafana. In fact Morris and Mokoena combined have cost Bafana a lot of games. It doesn't matter where you play, players should simply deliver on the day. Teko Modise is probably the highest ranked player in Bafana and he plays locally for Pirates...
Anonymous User6/4/2009 10:30 AM
Nkosi is a loss.... The axings could have been worse than this list...fortunately its not
Zakhele Mbatsane6/4/2009 10:26 AM
U know, I cant believe this! Morries is better than both Booth n Mokoena combined. Josephs is now in a form of his life...far better than Baloyi n Fernandez. but these players have been axed. It seems lyk Santana is sending a msg to SAFA that he no longer wants to coach our team but SAFA cant read. He dropped McCarthy, Khanyeza, left Henyekane for Mphela.....ya I dont have words!
VLS6/4/2009 10:24 AM
This guy is clueless. Absolutely clueless. Why we keep on ignoring targetmen like Nathan Paulse and Eleazor Rodgers is just puzzling. He prefers to play a formation with 1 striker yet no targetmen were selected for the squad! Retaining Brian Baloyi in the team is another mystery. This guy is arrogant and is bad for the team atmosphere, notwithstanding the fact that he hardly played for a crap Sundowns team this year. i'm happy that Siyabonga Nkosi is out though, but the overrated Lance Davids should be nowhere near the team either.
Anonymous User6/4/2009 10:24 AM
I HOPE SAFA STARTED LOOKING FOR THE REPLACEMENT COACH AFTER THE CONFED CUP, I HEARD CLIVE BARKER IS AVAILABLE.HE HAS A BIT OF BRAINS, GORDAN IGESAND IS ALSO AVAILABLE, EVEN LUCAS RADEBE THAT HAS NO EXPERIENCE HAS COACH WILL DO A BETTER JOB THAN THIS IDIOT, HONESTLY I DONT BLAME, THE REAL IDIOTS ARE SAFA.
Anonymous User6/4/2009 10:22 AM
eish uMdledle yena?
Anonymous User6/4/2009 10:15 AM
Typical we will come last .... Morris plays with top players week in week out - he has never said No to Bafana and Santana does a Benni on him!!!
fraud6/4/2009 10:15 AM
I defender who is wanted by a lot of Spanish teams and has played the full 90 minutes in all the games he's played in the Spanish league.....is dropped? hmmm....
pablo6/4/2009 10:13 AM
what is this,,,, do we realy need brain baloyi there,,,,, we need both morris and nkosi.... if this does not go well, santana you OUT with immidiate effect,, nxa
Anonymous User6/4/2009 10:12 AM
