Mokoena: We are all gutted

Aaron Mokoena (Gallo)

Johannesburg - Bafana Bafana skipper Aaron Mokoena, admitted he was "devastated" after brave Bafana were beaten 3-2 after extra time by the top ranked team in world soccer - Spain - in the Confederations Cup third place playoff at the Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace on Sunday.

It took a 107th free kick scored by Liverpool midfield star Xabi Alonso, to prevent 72nd ranked Bafana from notching the biggest upset in world soccer history.

The 25 000 odd fans at the Royal Bafokeng could not believe their eyes as Bafana threw caution to the wind and at times outplayed the European champions in a tough and uncompromising third place playoff.

Said Mokoena: "We are all gutted after playing so well and losing in the death from another free kick.

"But we made life difficult for a class team like Spain. We believe we could win, but again a mistake cost us what would have been an historic win."

Bafana were beaten 1-0 by Brazil in a nail biting semi-final showdown last Thursday night. Brazil retained their Confederations Cup crown with a 3-2 win over the United States in the final played at Ellis Park on Sunday night.

It took an 88th minute free kick scored by substitute Daniel Alves against Bafana for Brazil to reach the final.

While Mokoena and his teammates blamed themselves, head coach Joel Santana said he was happy with the players improvement during this two week event.

"We showed a lot of courage in this tournament and in this match against Spain. We gained incredible international experience in the Confederations Cup which has helped mold the squad on and off the field.

"I am very proud of my players overall performances in the competition.

"This is the first big step getting the team ready to be competitive at the World Cup next June. We have improved dramatically and we are getting better.

"I have a lot of friendly matches lined up before next June, the first in August that will help the players keep up this momentum."

Mokoena gave away the free kick against Brazil, while his central defensive partner Matthew Booth, was at fault for conceding the late free kick against Spain.

It was one of the few mistakes Booth has made in five tough matches during this tournament.

However, Mokoena who now joins English Premiership outfit Portsmouth on a three year deal, said despite being down after losing, there were more positives to take away from the tournament.

"We have regained our dignity and pride out there on the field and won back our loyal fans.

"We showed we are no longer the pushovers of international football and we have the ability to compete and beat the top sides at the World Cup in South Africa next June.

"The biggest plus for the players was the fact we played with confidence and we have seen our self belief come back. We also showed we can score goals.

"Scoring two goals against one of the best countries in the world was no fluke and well earned."

But Mokoena admitted Bafana had to work on focusing for 90 minutes. "We know where we have gone wrong. We will sit down and analyse the tournament and the head coach (Joel Santana) and his staff will plot the road forward to the World Cup."

Mokoena said Bafana had got stronger as the tournament progressed and improved with every game. "We might have lost our last three games 2-0 to Spain (in the group phase), Brazil and now again Spain. But we have got better and better - just ask Spain how hard we made it for them."

So well marked was Spains dangerman Fernando Torres by Booth and Mokoena the Liverpool striker was replaced in the 52nd minute and never threatened the hard working Bafana defence.

Mokoena said the players were "dog tired" after an exhausting tournament. "We played five games in two weeks. It was tough but we coped and this experience will go a long way in helping us prepare for the bigger picture - and that is doing well at the World Cup."

why is Mokoena still with the team, he has conceded the most goals and still has a mouth to talk about how the team feels about losing. I feel Mokoena and Modise must leave the team, BAFANA's display also highlighted the weaker players. SANTANA must stop listening to SAFA bosses about who to select!
Anonymous User6/29/2009 3:35 PM
Not soccer again. If I watch a full game, it will be 90mins of my life wasted. Watching two teams kick a ball around for that amount of time kills braincells! Soccer in general. I dunno how someone can watch this puke. I'd rather smoke a bag full of dry leaves!
Tracey6/29/2009 2:57 PM
You guys are unbelievable. I was never one to watch Bafana Bafana play any matches, until now. I have been engrossed in the absolute brilliance, determination and gut wrenching performances I have seen over the past few weeks. You are Brilliant. I can not wait to see what you can do in the world cup.
Hopeful!6/29/2009 1:47 PM
Well done Boys! You guys showed guts and determination. Learn from the lessons during the Confed Cup and I have no doubt that next year we will perform much better at the SWC! You have now EARNED the respect of many new supporters!
soccernut6/29/2009 1:36 PM
To all of you saying that we only won one game and lost 3... I guess you only started to watch Bafana lately. Their improvement has been phenomenal! We can't expect to win every game overnight but the improvement is clearly visible. Watch our boys play more often before you comment! Well done Bafana Bafana! You've made us so proud!
Max6/29/2009 1:35 PM
Keep your head up boys, you exceeded everybody's expectations and for that you shopuld be proud

Something very sinister is going on here can some please explain to me why this MAMPARA is still captain of our pride of Mzansi , we all know who marshal the defense at the back his name is Boooooooth.
jambula Polriscjivk6/29/2009 1:17 PM
get over yourself mokoena. You have failed to register a win in this tournament. You should be gutted. The whole country is celebrating your loss hoping all the top 71 countries in the world collapse so you can be crowned champions thru the back door like the way you came into the semi finals. what a pathethic load of bulldust comments. Win and remain constant with wins. Games against the likes of Iraq should have been won. chancing in the later stages wont make you champions, but losers
Vasi6/29/2009 1:17 PM
Well done Bafana! You guys brought back memories of the '96 Cup of Nations which I followed you guys around to watch every game. You made me proud and I'm looking forward to supporting you in the World Cup next year.

Well done men! I watched in awe! You were all so amazing! I can't wait to see you kick ass AGAIN in 2010!
Anonymous User6/29/2009 11:23 AM
Mokoena, you should have been dropped months ago, how you still make the team one will never know. You call it "a mistake" I call it wrong selection. When will be ever learn, choose the best players
redryan6/29/2009 11:22 AM
Hats off to our guys .Well played ! You made us proud . If there is one lesson we as a footballing nation ( and hopefully the national coach ) have learnt is that without a top class striker or two Bafana is always going to be second best when playing against the top sides . Our midfield play and our defending is okay against the New Zealands of the soccer world but not great - we lack creativity and we give the ball away too easily and against teams like Spain and Brazil we get punished for it . It was a gutsy performance which can be used as a template for neccessary improvements to the side and improvements are required NOW with the world cup a year away . If anything , this tournament has highlighted the shortcomings of the current squad to Santana and hopefully he will do whatever is required to remedy the situation . He had better do so now , because in the WORLD CUP the stakes are much higher and even the weaker teams will raise their game while we seem to have reached our peak already compared to how we have played the game not so long ago

Godfrey6/29/2009 10:40 AM
What a game it was! Spain, the number one FIFA ranked team in the world being tightly marked by a team rated 72nd, it's amazing. Bafana Bafana have certainly improved.
itidimalleng6/29/2009 10:34 AM
Good play. A time for results and good play must come. Our coach is good with iniatial game plan, the problem starts when oposition starts to read his game plan. He starts to lose ideas. overall good gents. S Gaxa My Man the stage was too high for you. Kill you fear. Mashego you placed yourself well in the box sorry for bad luck.
Dumisani6/29/2009 10:23 AM

mayweather6/29/2009 10:22 AM
You can just imagine how gutted I felt. I went to the stadium and watched almost the entire game to the 84th minute and felt SA was cruising and me and family decided to make a dash for the road to the Joburg final. I told everyone that cared to listen that we have won the game, and even as I was driving back home, one thought was on my mind and that we had won the game. Alas came the news that its 2-2 and extra time, I couldn't believe that Spain had scored two goals in that few minutes that were left but slighhtly happy we managed to score to put the ame to extra time. Football sucks some time. But overall, the tournament has learnt us some valuable hard lessons of knowing when to kill the game, when to attack with venom when the opponent allows you. But they did well, people.
Thusko6/29/2009 10:06 AM
Well Done guys!!!!!!!!!!!! Keep it up
fern6/29/2009 10:06 AM
dj - you id1ot.. Well done boys!
gunny6/29/2009 10:05 AM
We must stop having this losing mentality in soccer. We know our development programmes is crapp and we talking about Bennie to hide it. It going to come back and haunt us next year when we lose in the first round of the world cup
Anonymous User6/29/2009 9:46 AM
Yes you should be gutted cause you've been making mistakes the whole tournament. We all know why you are the captain of Bafana. K@K player
MP6/29/2009 9:46 AM
This is a good performance considering that we had rebuild a squad after many years of mismanagement of football in this country. We played until the last day of the touney and that's important. Well done thus far! It's a pity that research is taboo in SA footbal because it would have guided our coach where to look for strikers. Here's a question: Based on SA soccer history, what is a profile of a good SA football striker? Looking for dempgraphics, attributes and all! This will help us look in the right direction for strikers. My definition of striker is anybody who has scored at least 18 goals in any season.
conrad6/29/2009 9:39 AM
nice one boys for so many years most fellow south africans did not support you, now you have the support of the whole nation. You made us proud and for those fellow SA keep the support during good and bad times. Bring Benny back we need a goal scorer. Proudly south african
Lilly6/29/2009 9:31 AM
I was not behind our team for the game at first, but they did us proud. Well done guys. You should be proud of yourselves for making it this far guys.
samsam6/29/2009 9:15 AM
WENA MANI please consider voluntary retirememnt from BB for the interest of the nation maaan nxhe. The coach too must stop being manipulated by greedy officials by dictating who to play or not, FOUR palyers dont deserve to be in BB TEKO, MHLONGO,MASHEGO,'N YOU GOAT see what happened when van Heerden came in and see what happened after MHLONGO CAME IN aaag maaan
Alistair6/29/2009 9:12 AM
Well well well done Santana and 'the boys'. From having lost all interest in SA football over the last years, I an so impressed with you guys now! A mammoth improvement, and you can hold your heads HIGH on the International Stage now! THis new Bafana can go a long way to uiting our Nation like our Rugby and Creicketers have done. Win or lose, you suddenly have the right spirit, and the skills are just getting better and better!! Go Boys!!
dj6/29/2009 8:59 AM
wow - played 5 - won 1. awesome. if only our rugby and cricket teams can get to a 20% win ratio
Raymond 6/29/2009 8:47 AM
wow, its that time again. Thanks to Bafana Bafana, what an extreme good performance on this tournament and with hope I know this is just the beginning. Everyone out there lets congratulate Bafana Bafana for the best performance. Now we need strikers that can partition the defenders so we can score goals.
Nazeem6/29/2009 8:47 AM
Well done SA, win or loose we can compete. Win or loose we should all be patriotic. Win or loose, I was born a SOUTH AFRCAN. Assalaamu Alaykum
Marius6/29/2009 8:41 AM
Let the games begin.....leave politics to the politicians . Bafana you concentrate on what you do best...the SAPS will ensure a safe haven at the games ...as they always do...with little pay incentive....and long hours ! We will do well...if all our stars are available...that includes Benni...you can not buy that kind of experience and class on every corner !!!!
lm6/29/2009 8:33 AM
Bafana Bafana has done Mzantsi proud.... hold your head up high boys and know that the country is behind you.
Catch The Hug6/29/2009 8:29 AM
A couple of things why I don't support Bafoena Bafoena, They can't pass the ball like true soccer players, and when they get into the penalty box, they always want to kill the goal keeper by wanting to kick that ball so hard, it is like they get fritened when they actually reach the in goal arena. SOrry but I am not impressed, They must stop playing diski soccer, maybe , just maybe they will beat Zimbabwe next time...
Anonymous User6/29/2009 8:25 AM
Well if we analyse the tourney, we've had one win one draw and three losses, yet Santana feels "proud" of his players. Spain lost one match and they are unsatisfied. Yes I know Spain is far better but if we want to take the world on in 2010 these are the teams we must measure us against. As for the last two games Bafana did show great improvement. I just wonder how long it will take before the make salary demands due to their "great" tournament performance.
Jaco6/29/2009 8:25 AM
Agree with Rob & Vincent, I was not a Bafana supporter but their play in the Confed changed my view - I think they played good soccer and you can see that the more they play against the likes of Brazil and Spain, the more they develop - GO Bafana!
TonyY6/29/2009 8:23 AM
To anonymous at 07:36: why are you so bitter? whatever happened to you that you became such a sad individual? You say Brazil had a bad day. You say Spain also had a bad day. Everytime we doe good its because others fail. I dont think you take yourself seriously. I have played football abroad, and can tell you that Spain & Brazil were genuinely outplayed for periods, much to their frustration. It is astonishing how SA has improved.
old, female, paleface6/29/2009 8:22 AM
Really very proud of your class performance and concentration, in such a long drawn out match. The nation is behind you and you did NOT LOSE - you gained far more than points. Our respect! Good luck forward guys, you have grown from Boys Boys to Men Men ! You showed up the undisciplined Springboks who were at sixes and sevens.
Rhod6/29/2009 8:21 AM
Brilliant!! Whoever the anonymous idiot who says Bafana will be knocked out first round really has no idea about the sport and obviously didn't watch the games. Bafana played excellently and will do all of us proud next year. I don't think we'll win but at least we will be a team to be reckoned with!!
Mzukisi6/29/2009 8:21 AM
Bafana played well for the country only if all south african irrespective of their colour could rally behind them, like the way everytime the sharks vs blue bulls game gets soo much hype in the townships....we must unite as a nation n live like christians or any kind of religion ones believes in.....love n peace n support on positives aspects of our society.
Mpaku Mathabathe6/29/2009 8:20 AM
The forgotten football nation that boots a colourful history nearly decorated their football history.Congradultions to the rainbow nation. As a nation we must admit that we have found victory in yesterday loss against Spain. On a negative note, the coach made one tactical error by replacing Shabalala for Mhlongo, our foot was on the pedal so excellaration was necessary not the opposite but I am not the coach. well done Bafana
mpo6/29/2009 8:19 AM
WOW;what a free kick from Mphela in the last minute of the second half when we thought no one can score from that position in our team, well played guys better luck next time. We'll all be rooting for you come next year's world cup i'll be there .................
fan now6/29/2009 8:15 AM
well done guys - you have shown that you can do it lets keep it this way for 2010
The Billionaire6/29/2009 8:01 AM
Bafana Bafana played very well they have really improved alot, their tactics their defensive play they truly played world class games they truly deserve a standing novation for their play, they are not the same as what they were before, the caoch is truly doing a great job, well done Joel Santana.
Vincent Watson6/29/2009 7:53 AM
I have seen the error of my ways and like many weren't a believer in the Bafana Bafana team .Guys, you have made us proud as South Africans and you will surely have my support for next year if you continue playing like you did during the Confederations Cup .You weren't intimidated by the best players in the world .Viva Bafana Bafana !
Alan6/29/2009 7:52 AM
The fact that Bafana lost doesnt matter - the guys have played like a top world class team, and are improving with every game. Well done Santana and the boys - you have made us proud to be South Africans! I am highly impressed!!
ShanMoff6/29/2009 7:51 AM
Well done Bafana Bafana. What a fantastic display of football in your last 2 games. We are all proud of you and I think you have a fantastic base to now build on. You looked tired and seemed to have lost your drive to win in the second half of extra time. Coach is going to have to work on that!!
Anonymous User6/29/2009 7:42 AM
I think that Bafana have done very well in the Confed Cup. They have put up brave fights against much stronger and higher rated opposition teams. They have shown that they have a will to fight and win and I believe that with some more time and experience these guys have the potential to become a truly great team. The team should now just keep up the good work and build on the experience gained. Congrats to you all! You did us proud!
Magda6/29/2009 7:40 AM
Well done Bafana! Pity about the penalties- but very well played!
Jaco6/29/2009 7:40 AM
Ai Tog, I feel gutted too!! But we played so well!! Welldone my Team I am so proud of you. Our soccer is just getting better and better but we need to finish off better! Lekker Bafana!!!!
Anonymous User6/29/2009 7:36 AM
sorry for you, you haven't yet beaten Brazil or Spain or Iraq or Zimbabwe You claim to have played well. Brazil and Spain have had off days.... the pitch quality at Ellis PArk was atrocious. where are all the funds gone to, that was allocated for a proper turf/pitch. Bafan will be knocked out in the first round next year.... Bafana has still a lot to learn about football
Rob6/29/2009 7:27 AM
Schalk Schalk Schalk. What are you thinking lad? It is this type of indiscretion that makes us lose. Remember the England game a few years ago. A red card in the first 5 minutes and we could never survive. Time for you to sit back and think about what you are doing. Maybe 8 weeks is too short. Heinrich make this your place now for 2011.
Rob6/29/2009 7:22 AM
Guys, you can hold your head up high. This last week you made us all feel very proud to be South Africans. I am an avid rugby supporter, but watching the bafana play this week, makes me want to start supporting our guys more actively. Lets show the world we are chanmpions and not chumpions and go far in 2010. Keep it up and continue making us proud.
