Johannesburg - A German journalist died on Monday from injuries he sustained in a car crash as he made his way to report on last week's Confederations Cup semi-final between Spain and the United States in Bloemfontein.

A sombre FIFA president Sepp Blatter announced the death of Wolfgang Jost at the start of his post Confed Cup briefing at Coca-Cola Park.

"I should be a very satisfied and happy president of FIFA after the experience we have had but unfortunately one of four German victims of the car crash five days ago died on Monday morning.

"It is a very sad situation, we are not masters of our own destiny. My condolences go to his family."

Blatter then led a moment's silence for the loss as he said of "a member of the FIFA family".

Jost was one of two travelling in the car who suffered serious injury. The other two passengers escaped unharmed.

The victims, from the German news agency SID, an AFP subsidiary, were travelling with two colleagues when their car lost control and rolled over near the city of Winburg in the Free State province.
