Johannesburg -  Bafana Bafana played out of their skins and at the end of the night can consider themselves unlucky to go down 1-0 to a Brazil side that were made to look ordinary at times.

It took an 87th minute free kick from Brazil substitute Daniel Alves to earn the Confederation Cup holders their win in a closely fought semifinal showdown over a brave Bafana at a packed Coca Cola Park on Thursday night.

Bafana were that close to another big upset. The United States managed a two goal win over European champions Spain on Wednesday night.

But the hosts won the hearts of the nation and the capacity crowd. It was Bafana's best display in years and certainly their best under head coach Joel Santana.

The fact that Bafana star Steven Pienaar was named Man of the Match shows how well the team played against a glittering array of Brazilian superstars which included Kaka, Robinho and Luis Fabiano.

Brazil had destroyed the United States 3-0 and world champions Italy 3-0 on their road to the semifinals but this was by far their toughest match in the Confederations Cup.

Brazil play the United States at Coca Cola Park in the final on Sunday night (8.30pm) while Bafana meet Spain in the playoff for third place at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium on Sunday at 3pm.

The 48  000 strong crowd added to the excitement by cheering every Bafana tackle and Bafana more than held their own in an exciting first half in which the home crowd were watching at times in disbelief as Teko Modise, Siphiwe Tshabalala and Pienaar bossed the midfield against the likes of Kaka, Robinho and Ramires.

Both Bafana full backs Siboniso Gaxa on the right and Tsepo Masilela on the left  troubled Brazil with their over lapping runs.

But what was outstanding was Bafana's tight marking and solid defending where central defenders Aaron Mokoena and Matthew Booth gave nothing away against a much more experienced attack.

In fact the best shot of the first half came from a Pienaar scorcher in the 43rd minute that shaved the paint of the Brazil post.

Bright future

Bafana goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune again showed he is going to be the number one choice for years to come with excellent stops in the first 45 minutes.

Khune did well to stop Ramires opening the scoring in the 12th minute. Bafana hit back a minute later when Gaxa rounded Brazil left back Andre Santos and unleashed a powerful drive that just missed the target.

Brazil had another escape when Bafana skipper Mokoena headed a Modise free kick fractionally wide of the crossbar on 21 minutes.

Brazil keeper Julio Cesar showed his class when he did well to fist away a well taken Tshabalala free kick from 25 metres in the 34th minute as the home side took the game to their more fancied opponents.

Three minutes later new Real Madrid signing and the Brazilian superstar Kaka rounded both Gaxa and Mokoena and inched a powerful shot past the upright.

Kaka again showed why he is one, if not the best player in world soccer, when he collected the ball inside his own half and raced for goal only to be denied by Khune who did well to save the Brazilian's shot at the near post three minutes from the break.

A minute later Pienaar's pile driver shaved the post as the home side refused to be intimidated or overawed in an evenly fought opening half.

Julio Cesar pulled off the save of the night from a 20 metre thunderbolt that had the crowd off the feet in the 57th minute as Bafana took the initiative.

Mokoena led by example when he time and again put his body on the line. He saved a certain goal when he threw himself at a Robinho's rocket from inside the Bafana penalty area in the 75th minute that the crowd loved.

But a mistake by Mokoena earned Brazil a free kick on the edge of the area in the 87th minute. Alves who had just come on scored the only goal with a wicked curling free kick that gave Khune no chance.

RL - he curled the ball around the wall, not through a gap. It was a great shot, unfortunately for Khune. Khune first moved right then left but it was too late as the ball curved in at speed and beat him. None the less, I think Khune is one of our best keepers ever. May that boy get to play many matches for BB. BTW - Its great to see so many new supporters for soccer. Good play by our national teams always seem to pull this country together.

Being a rugger bugger and not knowing too much about the technicalities of soccer strategy , can someone enlighten me as to why there was such a big gap in the wall when that Brazilian took the free kick - cause to me it looked like he just booted it straight through the gap - no defenders ?

Hahaha LOl, bafana was lucky..brazil pitied us. We need much practice.
Anonymous User6/26/2009 4:33 PM
To the people who keep pointing out that bafana bafana lost-we get that-it was an entertaining game that gave South Africans a much needed jolt of hope-leave the land of perpetual pessimism, misplaced negativity and capalist driven obsession with winning. It was a good game-give that inch please...
Ryan6/26/2009 4:32 PM
Well done Bafana. Excellent game against Brazil. We are proud. Will someone please explain to me why Booth (being such a good defender and tall) always stands at the far end of posts when a corner is being taken against Bafana. He should be on the near post to use his height to defend incoming balls.
Anonymous User6/26/2009 2:40 PM
banana republic 0, brazil 1. as simple as that. we are discussing what could have been, instead of what happened (what was expected anyway) lets get out of dream land. after all this, we will be subjected to the miserable psl for blacks. we superior people with our roots in europe support quality soccer, that is why you wil only see us at the stadium for the confed cup and the world cup. after that the stadiums will be full of the average man without taste for the finer things in life. that is my honest opinion in this free country which continues to be belonging to us economically.

@Anonymous 7:37 AM - there's nothing called 71 something you moron........ get your spelling right before you criticize. well done Bafana, you displayed a very good soccer last night. Brizillians were frustrated all the way. Nice passing and movement of the ball! Teko PLS STOP BEING SELFISH, JUST PASS THE BALL

What sterling performance showed by Bafana Bafana yesterday. The guys played awesome soccer they were just unlucky to score. But one can allude that there is somewhere where Bafana are going. The coach has to do slight changes of ensuring that he make changes in time.Best of luck Bafana in the near future.
Viyassen6/26/2009 1:25 PM
Brilliantly played. Those of you that think otherwise. You are all Kunjees. Check that up in any Hindustani DICTIONARY
Danny 6/26/2009 1:13 PM
Well done SA ,u made us PROUD,Hope the european teams take our boys for more experience. Now we just need a clinical striker to finish of our good build up play.Brazil played their normal game but we were the better team on the night.

Win, lose, whatever. Bafana have played a game like no other bafana team have done. I am proud of the guys. They showed heart and determination. Say what you want but we did not roll over, we didnt back down.........we also didnt win. But in the grand scheem of things you have to give them props. And all the haters are just a banch of poepoles

Bennie6/26/2009 12:07 PM
Unlucky number 13 + 87 minutes is 100% for Brazil. Congratulations to Bafana for a game well defended and managed to frustrate the Brazil players. Bafana must be more alert 100% of the time. It seemed to me that Naas Botha trained the strikers because they 'skepskop' the ball over the bar all the time. Butter luck next time baKaka maKaka (spirit of Brazil)
RSM6/26/2009 11:58 AM
I've been a Santana critic since he came to be coach under interesting circumstances. The time following that showed very little to prove that he was any kind of a class coach. But following the games against Spain and Brazil (ironically both of which we lost), I am a fan! I think the guy has brought heart and urgency to our team that has lacked for so long. I hope that the country and SAFA stays behind him and the current Bafana squad because I think they're going in the right direction in the lead up to 2010.
Khunwana6/26/2009 11:47 AM
The Boyz had a far better game last nite BUT they MUST learn to ALWAYS go for 'man to man' and KNOW that if and when you waste the ball you should RUN to get it back!!! To the COACH and Technical - why SUBSTITUDE when you are left with only a MINUTE or few SECONDS!!!! Please do look at YOUR WATCHES and Substitute atleast 10 Minites before the game ends or go to half time!!!!

@Bafana Local Coach That sounds like a brilliant Idea but we would have been rigid in the centre, Tshabalala is a left wing and Pienaar would have been pushed to the right leaving Kagiso and Benson in the middle (less attck going forward) these guys hardly attacked us, i would have pushed Gaxa up drifted Pienaar infront of the two strikers 3-5-2 with either Kagiso or Mhlongo having the option to paddle back when defending. How is that?
johncarlos6/26/2009 11:45 AM
To the 'quota' and 'representation' boys, if quotas were to be applied, it would actually add 'African' players and reduce coloured players by 75%. White players wouldn't be added since they are represented as per demographics. Be careful what u ask for.;;

I really proud of my African brothers-That was wonderful
Anonymous User6/26/2009 11:38 AM
As a long time Bafana supporter, I have followed my team through the ups and the downs...Last night's experience made everything worthwhile! We saw African football...with a hint of South American flair...not Us Africans trying to emulate the Europeans. If we play Spain like the way we played Brazil...we could beat them convincingly! One thing however...lots of people were calling for Benni to come back...but I would rather lose without Benni than win with Selfish, Arrogant Benni!!!
Anonymous User6/26/2009 11:23 AM
Well done Bafana you made us proud ! Santana you need to substitute on time ......... i'm proud of the boys even if they did not score any goals they played well. Viva bafana viva .....it was luck on Brazil 's side .....free kick gave them a win.

we lost with pride..i take my hat off for Bafana Bafana, great performance indeed and well done Sanata for rebuiding a team.He who have a problem with OUR TEAM'S(PROUDLY SOUTH AFRICAN) performance you deserve to change your citizenship...VIVA BAFANA VIVA...2010 World Cup here we come.....

I too was very impressed with the Bafana performance, this is not the South African team of the past. they have combined individual skill with a hard working team display. I am not just talking about this display, but the Bafana I have seen over the past few months. I have also been looking to buy the kit.. but cannot find a single XL size in JHB... help anyone?? where to buy one???
mayweather6/26/2009 11:03 AM
@RauRau 6/26/2009 8:47 AM, perhaps if you re-read what you have written you'd have realised what a load of bulldust you have written. here we talking comparison of where we were vs the present which is promising. Does the game btwn bafanabafana vs nigeria in Nigeria ring a bell, cos there, the guys just laid their bodies for Nigeria to trample over without giving a fight. There is a quatu leap BafanaBafana have made and am proud. be objective next time please, you can complain/criticise but give credit where its due. What is important is progress, and yes we have progressed somewhat. We are not regressing or stading still, please tell us abiout that please ntate.

well done to bafana bafana.they proved many worng after last nights world class ffotball if they keep their heads and stay focused. The rest of the world should start worrying that we could possibly make history at the 2010.heads up to santana as he has groomed these guys.
Anonymous User6/26/2009 10:59 AM
Bafana Bafana can take pride in their performance last night - I certainly watched in amazement as a faint hope almost became reality. The problem with Bafana has never been with the players... South African soccer players have got to be amongst the most naturally skilled in the world. The problem has always been administration and discipline. During the period of relative stability in SAFA in 96, the team won AFCON. Granted, that was an exceptional team with a charismatic coach (regardless of colour!) full of experienced superstars who went on to greater personal achievement. Since then we've been through political infighting and countless good coaches, each not given the time to impress their discipline and style upon the team... some of that stems from our impatience as supporters. Santana seems to have found a squad and style of play that suits the team - he needs the support to take this team to bigger and better things. For the first time in years, Bafana actually look fit and up for the challenge and seem to be improving with every performance, not like in previous seasons when their form was unpredictable and patchy. Finishing remains a problem and I would be only too happy if Benni resolves his issues, gets his mind and body right, and comes back into the fold. The strikers we have now are talented but lack finesse and a cutting edge - that will come with experience. Congrats to Bafana Bafana a team who are rank outsiders but have earned the respect of the worlds top players at this Confed Cup. I think that most Bafana supporters were hoping that this would not be an embarassment. Bafana have done far more than that. For those of you who are South African & have posted negative comments on this site, you are entitled to your opinion - I just think its sobering to see how far our country actually needs to go in our quest for reconciliation. Your attitudes although tolerated, are naive and do not help! I hope that the Bafana Bafana that take the field in WC2010, build on these performances and the players take the opportunity to shine in their own backyard, for all the world to see. Although I won't be at any of the games, I will find the nearest tv and get behind our team, vuvuzela in hand!!!!
Lotus6/26/2009 10:40 AM
Cliff Bradley & Marcello - it is not about the winning but how you play the game and last night Bafana Bafana played the game and made Brazil work for that goal. Yes WE (cos make no mistake the nation stood behind our team) lost but not for lack of trying and for a team that is not as strong as Spain or Italy or Germany it is reason enough for us to say WE are proud today.
Anti-Vuvuzela6/26/2009 10:39 AM

Bafana Bafana - you made us proud! You showed the world that you got game and can bring it against the best in the world. Spectacular match and you had SA firmly behind you and gave it your all. Old fancy face Kaka looked liked he needed a tissue to dry his tears he was so frustated! Bafana local coach6/26/2009 10:10 AM
Hats off to Bafana. The coach-Santana needs a technical director to assist him with technical aspects of modern day football. It was evident after about 20minutes of play that Brazil were on the back foot.Santana should have thus substituted out of form Teko for Mashego.Teko was not needed in the game considering that tshabalala & pienaar were dictating the pace in the middle of the park. This tactical change(4-5-1) to 4-4-2 would have resulted in a famous victory for Bafana. Your comments on my analysis are welcome

THE TRUTH !6/26/2009 9:27 AM
VERY proud of our boys, BIG UP guy's ! I do however, have a few concerns : 1) We had a good chance of getting to the final because we had the "easy" group, with only Spain being the tough team, 2) We are at home - we are used to the crappy pitches while the European teams are not & it hampers their style & 3) We are used to playing at high altitude - what happens in 2010 when the European teams especially, play at sea level - will they give us rugby scores ? Lastly, 4) We are a RAINBOW nation, right ? This is clear by our INDIVIDUAL mixture of colors that are South African - I can't think of another country that has so many different races, but all one nationality - even our Anthem is in different languages so everyone feels South African, so why, and this IS NOT a racist question, are there no more "white", "coloured" & "indian" guy's in the team - do they simply not make the grade ? ANYWAY, WELL DONE TO THE BOYS, you did make us proud - 10/10 for effort ! From a non-white, non-black AFRICAN !

Point Blank6/26/2009 9:19 AM
To answer a question posed here. No, it was not good enough we didn't win but, we could've and that is a hell of a lot better then we were two years ago. The boys played outstanding soccer, they played with heart and pride and a generous helping of skill and African style. It is a team greatly improved and it shows and that is what we celebrating. That is what a true South African does, they get behind THEIR teams and lifts them up and encourages them to do better and better. I am proud this morning, I watched an incredible game and South Africa was one of the teams.

Booth had a gr8 game! he must be under pressure for being the only white player in team and yet his the best defender in the country! Pienaar also very good ! we need more white players that can think with their head and not with their feet! why is our rugby and cricket such gr8 teams? look at the players!

"FootBallMad" Mr or Mrs whoever you are, you are really mad. I don't think you are a good parent the way you talk. Bafana bafana and SAFA, lets prepare the squad for 2010. Lets bring back 4 nations cup tournament.
Bandon Marc6/26/2009 9:08 AM
I've never been a SA soccer fan... until I saw last nights match. Well done Bafana, and best of luck for 2010!
Grumpy6/26/2009 9:08 AM
I love living in a country where white supporters shout "Beeeeeast" for a black player and black supporters shout "Booooth" for a white one. Congrats to Bafana, what a game - you've converted one more rugby fan to football. And to Jimmy Jackpot and friends, why don't you all wind your necks in and go and get knotted.
Magno6/26/2009 9:08 AM
What can one say but WELL DONE BOY'S ! Great game to watch, well done COACH, above all - enjoyable skillful football. A point - we need to have a specialist taker of set pieces ? and I mean someone special that will move the ball and hit the target. If we could just get out players to all hit the target more - it does not matter if the keeper saves, but if we made him work more, the goals will come.

Well done Bafana. You guys have proved a lot of doubters wrong. The nation(the majoruty support you). Anonymous user 7.19: you are dead weight bro. A waste of oxygen and ruining our country. P.ss off. The team is entirelt representitive' Look at who are playing at Premiere level. Its not predominately a white played sport. Get over the quota thing

Well done BAFANA BAFANA you did yourselves proud in the eyes of the world.Good effort, commitment and willingness to win.You now need to play these top teams regularly and back yourselves to improve.Keep on believing...all the time.To the negative cowards who are never happy...May the Lord help you be better people.Good Luck to all South Africans for hosting the WC.
Cedrick Lumadi6/26/2009 9:03 AM
Bafana Bafana should have wrapped that game long before halftime. I just don't know why our coach will defend all zeros score sheet. We outplayed Brazil at times and loosing that game with a 1-0 margin is just not good enough.
Anonymous User6/26/2009 9:02 AM
Bafana done a excellant job.Well done to Steven Pienaar for getting player of the match. But what we need strikers that will finish off the ball and get it in the net.It does nto help to always defend soccer is own on goals
Jaco6/26/2009 9:02 AM
Well done boys, you made us pride.... you can hold your heads high with a performance like that!!

Well done bafana BUT SANTANA MUST GO....i dont really know who is the head coach of our national team.Santan keeps phoning Carlos ferrira of which he(carlos ferrirra )was forced to be nautral last night.i think Santan have fail 4games only 2 goals.Always replace player at last minutes of the game.IT is really shame to have such inexperience coach.Gordon Igesund do well as a head coach.
johann6/26/2009 8:56 AM
hey, bafana coming second,if this was motorsport you would not even made it to the start line.look what you have done, you even broke miachel jacksons heart

A job well done Santana finally the boys have made us proud, who wud have thot the boys were gonna give the brazzilians hell??? We sure are ready for 2010
DM096/26/2009 8:55 AM
We become a real, united nation when our teams play well. It has always been the Rugby boys, or cricket boys that do us proud. Last night, for the first time in over a decade I was proud to support Bafana. You have done us all proud, you have made yourselves proud.
Anonymous User6/26/2009 8:55 AM
Its surprising the whole nation is celebrating a defeat, even the losing coach smiles after going down fighting. Its high time S. Africa realises that fighting is not necessarilly winning. U should strife to win, not to go down fighting. A lose is a lose - & there is no bad win. Tough luck Bafana

South Africa played well but whats with Aron the skipper his blunders are costy? Even his header, he rose up well but what proffessional soccer player does not know that the ball should be headed down to give that bounce.
tumi6/26/2009 8:49 AM

Anonymous User6/26/2009 8:47 AM
at the end of the day, sa is a land of hope, dreams and fantasies without the requirements of a great nation proper input. we don't have quality, cenceptual ability, brain capacity, mental strength and the nerves of steel. generally in sport, science and technological advancement we are lacking. we still have the slave mentality which will take the younger generation to correct. then we will compete with the best in the world and win, maybe in the next century.
RauRau6/26/2009 8:47 AM
Do u still remember what Kostadic Papic did with Pirates for 2 seasons, Pirates played good football (in fact they were the most feared team in the PSL for 2 consecutive years BUT wat did they do, they came no 2, neva won any silver wear. thats wats happening with BB playing good football, but yhey now going to play in the loosers final.thanks to that idiot called Aaron Mokoena, he cost us big time......Walter Mokoena was right he doesn't deserve any place in the BB LINE UP.
Lady K6/26/2009 8:46 AM
Ya! Well done Bafana, but Mokoena doesn't deserve to play for National team and Katlego Mashego NO!!! they must play and please let Fontein Play as well, Santana please let the guy play. Viva SA Viva!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Jan6/26/2009 8:45 AM
Well done to Bafana Bafana. I didn't really give them a chance last night but they played really really well!! They matched Brazil man for man and we were unlucky not to score on at least two occasions. We've had a good tournament but we need to beat Spain now to make this a great one. Well done again boys! BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOTH!!!! :)
Magezi ( from Giyani)6/26/2009 8:42 AM
Santana found SA without two things: a team and a style of play. He has established those two things in an incredibly short time! Dead wood is gone from the team, they play a blend of African and Brazilian style. That is why the bamboozled Brazil. Well done Santana and Bafana Bafana! SAFA should keep Santana for now. He appears to hold a bright future for our national team. Local teams could also benefit from him.
Sonja6/26/2009 8:41 AM
I never watch soccer, but decided last night it is now time to get behind the boys. I was spellbound for 90 minutes, Wonderful! and well done
Haroldo (from Brazil)6/26/2009 8:41 AM

Peter6/26/2009 8:39 AM
Absolutely their best performance to date. Viva! Bafana Bafana Viva! We're proud of you guys. Normally I'm very critical of our soccer but NOT last night's game. We do this in the world cup and we will go all the Way. Come on 2010 I wanna win.

Xokzin. who are the morons? everybody that makes an objective assesment is a moron. it looks like we must all make subjective comments and become phantom scientists? well in your statement you say welldone to the boys they played well but lacked quality! what an oxymoron. lack of quality = played well?

Vuvuzela6/26/2009 8:36 AM
Hola..hola!! Bafana rocks!!! We played with great determination & spirit well done to Santana & the boys. We outplayed them first half & we could have scored if Mokoena have converted the header & Pienaar was very close to open his account. The only down-fall is our captain who does not have composure to stand his ground under pressure we can really do without him. An experienced player like him who plays in one of the elite leagues in the world could have known better than to tackle on the edge of the area with no immediate danger for the team. Overall they made us proud
Ryan6/26/2009 8:36 AM
Couldn't agree more Xokzin. There will always be idiots (luckily most of them have emigrated to Australia though!). Was awesome to see the crowd having such a blast. I felt the dissapointment wth them there at the end. Next time our boys play in Cape Town, I'll be there to join in the party. Now to find a green hard-hat and springbok antlers....
Anonymous User6/26/2009 8:36 AM
@Garth Strachten I get tired of ignorant buffoons like you. What would you consider reflecting the nation? Out of the 11 players on the field, 9% were white (out of 9% in the total population). 18% Coloured, far more than their national average. So, I am not really sure what you are on about, perhaps your stupidity is clouding your abilities to count. Furthermore, soccer unlike cricket and rugby never prevented anyone from playing soccer and the best player will most likely make the team. Fact is, the former number 1 keeper is white, but has been reduced to the bench by a great performance from young Khune. In the 22 men Squad, there are 9% white, 40% coloured and the rest black. In fact, black players are underrepresented in the national team and soccer followers are not complaining. Take your racism to Orania, you fool

Well done Coach Joel Santana, Captain Aaron Mokoena and all the boys. You did your country proud. We must accept that there will always be those doomsday critics who firmly believe that as Africans we are inferior but last night Bafana Bafana proved that we can match and even beat the best in the world. Fact of the matter is that soccer is played on a competitive basis in almost every country in the world unlike rugby and cricket were it is played in no more that 15 countries on a professional basis. Having said that it should be noted that South African sportspersons have always done us proud be they the Bokke, the Proteas, the Blade Runner, Natalie du Toit and I can go on and on and on. We are indeed a talented nation all we have to do is to unite around our ambassadors in sport. Once again thank you Bafana Bafana
Anonymous User6/26/2009 8:33 AM
A big shout-out to all the people who have been "constructively criticising" Bafana Bafana, you made it all possible. They would have not performed better had we not hauled insults at them. It seems like here in SA teh only way for people to do their job is when you insult, strike, etc.
Nikki6/26/2009 8:33 AM
As a lot of people will know I am an Afrikaner & a HUGE Blue Bulls Rugby fan but boy oh boy was I impressed with what I saw last night from Bafana! They played EXCELLENT & it was extremely entertaining to watch! If this is how they are going to perform & with one year left to further hone their skills then we will NO DOUBT be a force to be reckoned with come WC time! I think Brazil together with the rest also now respects our guys! Very well done guys...I am a proud South African today!

fantastic game last night, sa have really stepped up a notch since the last games and i feel we deserved a win last night. we made brazil work for a change in this confed cup which they havnt been doing since the start and im sure they and everybody else watching the game knows now that sa is coming up and a team not to be reckoned with. well done bafana u makes us proud, keep it up we all behind u
Anonymous User6/26/2009 8:32 AM
you only say well done to winners, not losers. slow learners in the main. 4 world cups since re admission. not done well enough in any of them. i see why the kivuki land man is always a loser with low interllectual capacity and below average iq. football is for europeans and south americans. with africans a distant 3rd because of poor discipline, unscientific methods, needless fouls that causes free kicks and penalties. players running with the ball until they are dispossed. poor quality, poor mental strength as evidenced last night. the americans are the masters of problem solving techniques. good at making both programmed and non programmed decisions. that is why they are a footballing nation that will occassionaly come with a surprise victory in a sport that they play part time.
new believer6/26/2009 8:30 AM
WOW! I am now a converted believer in both Bafana Bafana and Joel Santana.. The guys played with passion and belief. They played as a team and not as individuals as they used to do. The improvement we have made is immense and cannot wait to see what happens next year. I know who I will be screaming for! Santana now only needs to work on the striking force. Viva Bafana Bafana for 2010. @anon7:19 and Garth Strachten, both of you go crawl into your holes you arrogant prats!

For the first time in ages, the faith and love that South Africa had for its national team has been restored! I couldn't be happier to be a South African and part of such a team as Bafana Bafana. They outdid themselves in more aspects then one. You boys are really champoins! You should be proud. Brazil won by chance!!!
Sbu6/26/2009 8:28 AM
Nice play Bafana!! but Walter Mokoena was correct about his Brother Aaron Mokoena, he must give other young stars a chance!!
Anonymous User6/26/2009 8:28 AM
bafana will never win if they can't score goals. At least they have a white player in the team that makes the defence strong.
Len6/26/2009 8:28 AM
It was an agonising loss, but it was achieved through grit and determination. Instead of playing defensive football, we had confidence. May Sibaya be suspended for ever and ever. Well done to Pienaar, Tshabalala, Modise, Booth, Khune and the rest for showing the world that when the coach has belief in the team, the players can reward him
Amos Lence6/26/2009 8:26 AM
Great performance by Bafana - We have a team and a coach to help us get respect in the World Cup. Kaka was kept at bay by Mhlongo - Khune was just brilliant and Pienaar was superb - need I say more? We are playing Spain for the 3rd place play off - Lets support our team... Booth had a sterling game as well...
King6/26/2009 8:25 AM
Aaron Mokoena cost us a place in the final, how do u make such silly tackles in front of goals.where was his experience they always talk about, i hope it was his last game for BB.THE REST OF THE TEAM PLAYED EXCELLENT FOOTBALL, PITY THEIR EFFORTS WENT TO WASTE BECAUSE OF MOKOENA
mayweather6/26/2009 8:24 AM
As much as we lost two games in a row and perhaps also te third game we might lose. to me what stands out, is not to win at all costs. To me what we taking from these games is our preps for next years WC. The fact we played world's best team and will have played the world's No.1 ranked team twice in "competitive matches and not friendlies" by the time this tournament will be over, that experience is priceless. Next year, our plyers will not be overawed by the occassion of having to face best teams! Sometime we have to realize where we come from as a football nation, we are one of the minnows world football, this was a foundation that I pray that SAFA does not destroy. Like the father of Quantum physics would attest, let this small but noticeable efforts build on each other that by this time next year, we should have a team that is going to compete. No one knows who is going to win the WC next year, only God knows, whatif he as a special plan about us next year and we win. To me evenif we make it to second round or even quarties, i will be happy. There are some European countries who have never tasted what it feels to be in WC, in our case, that would be third time. That is progress bathong, I am proud of bafana bafana with their coach, Santana. there are obviously opportunities for improvements, but if we keep the momentum, we will be there. And most importantly, as a patriot of this amazing country, I am heratened by the fact that for the first time since AFCON 1996, SA white supporters are slowly getting back to support our team. We are in this together, phambili for SA, Phambili. United we stand, scattered we fall.
Anonymous User6/26/2009 8:24 AM
Well done guys...and big ups to the coach. The team has changed my views of them since last night, they can do it if they want to. Keep it rockin!!!
Frank6/26/2009 8:22 AM
Although I'm still of the opinion that we were lucky to reach the semi's, last night's game was brilliant. I still feel we lack good strikers and our first touches needs work but if BB keep this up they might even get somewhere in the rankings. Lets just hope they don't start demanding again before 2010 and loose focus on the WC. But still well played.
Mmane6/26/2009 8:21 AM
Joh! joh! joh! Well done Bafana. You had confidence and drive. I even forgot that Kaka and them were in the field as well. Santana please push Bafana to convert their effort into goals goals goals. Congradulations to all of us!!!!!!

Well done Coach Santana. A little fine tuning in the finishing department and we are certain to make a huge impact during the World Cup.
Anonymous User6/26/2009 8:19 AM
the bafana team of '96 had players and a coach with brains. only the white bright mind makes things happen in sa (clive barker was the coach). intelligent players like eric tinkler, andrew tucker, mark fish, ivan mckinley, bradley carnell and neil tovey. now we only have mattyhew booth as the only intelligent player. bring back the white players and we will see the top 20 ranking again.
Bryan6/26/2009 8:18 AM
I've never really been a Bafana fan, but after last nights game, I have new respect for this team. They played fantastically well and were most unlucky not to win. Well done boys you did South Africa proud!!!
Freedom Rams6/26/2009 8:18 AM
Eita hola...That was a beutiful game SA playd their best, bt jst need to learn how to keep position and not all go for one ball they should open up when the midfielders have the ball. otherwise SA should be ranked no 30 in the world not 70 sumthing.
SHAKES6/26/2009 8:17 AM
i think we got it right this time around, my problem is that what these guys are doing as they are called technical staff? we are going to lose more games if the substitution do'nt take place in time, thats for real. mokoena should be more careful in front of our goal, of his tackles but in all fairness, they can take anybody now. the best way of defence is to attack and syncronise as a unit. spain watch this space, we are coming to you and nothing to lose
Hannetjie6/26/2009 8:16 AM
Well done BAFANA !!!!! I normally don't watch soccer but last night's game was excellent - you actually deserved to win !!! Keep it up and South Africa will do well in the 2010 Soccer world Cup.

great! carry on praising mediocrity. bafana lost. so they were not the better team on the day. the better team won on the day. they did play far better than recent times and of the quality of football they have shown is very promising for the next couple of years. Oh, and everyone who calls for not-proudly south africans to leave, do you spend all your time here? never going anywhere but in sunny SA? grow up. not everybody has to support your team. it's called diversity, look it up.

Well what can we say ... great game by Bafana no matter what the end score. I would have loved to see you whip some yankee butt in the finals. Even though one goal got through, I'd say Itumeleng was man of the match. That boy made some damn fine saves on the night.

I have never been a soccer fan, but watching the game last night gave me some renewed respect for Bafana. In my humble opinion, there was nothing to separate the 2 teams. I'd go so far as to say that SA looked the better team (maybe not individual skill). It was a fantastic goal, all credit to Brazil.
FootballMad6/26/2009 7:57 AM
Ok they played well for once, but you cannot expect Bafana to pass the first round in the WC 2010. Proud of what? Of losing? This ain't Olimpics where partecipation is everything, here you win otherwise you are a LOSER. Bad subs, just panic substitutions. Bafana now maybe 59th in the world ranking ..no more
Pat Dacey6/26/2009 7:55 AM
Santana is doing a good job, our boys are playing intelligent football. An early goal would have given us the game, pity Mokoena's header went over the top. Pienaar's class shows, Khune's saves were brilliant. One criticism, Santana should have brought on Mashego with 10min to go. He gets caught out offsides, but besides that he's pretty sharp. Maybe, just maybe..........

brazil soccer team is the same as south africa's. a bunch of 11 players facing each other. 3rd time we play brazil and lost all 3. i dont see the improvement there. mokoena's experience is not evident. meaningless substitutions. not enough attack. we've been playing international football since'92. are we still learning? in this competition we played 4 games and scored only twice (against who?) and conceded 3 times. another loss to spain on sunday expected! that is if the coach does not use the players on the bench. get rid of pienaar, modise and mhlongo. give the other guys a chance in the meaningless match on sunday. its just another friendly game.

You Obviously don't Love your country because ALL You can do is Slam our Guys for doing their Best...I Will be at Every England game next year(because I like their style of Play) but I'll most definitely be at every Bafana Game because South Africa is my Home....I was Born here and Lived here all my life...Long Live this Amazing country...WELL PLAYED BAFANA....EVERY ONE OF YOU!!! If you don't like Bafana esp after Last night then you Not Proudly South African....So Go Away
Proud to be South African6/26/2009 7:43 AM
@ anon user 7:19 am. Go back to the apartheid days will you..or take a flight out of the country for good. Sport has and will always be the ket to keeping South Africans united. Be it rugby soccer or cricket.
Jimmy Jackpot6/26/2009 7:43 AM
The fact that "Bafana's best display in years" still results in a loss just shows where the quality of soccer in South Africa is. Is this the kind of culture we have in South Africa? Shame on all of you who think that this is good enough
Anonymous User6/26/2009 7:42 AM
Well played SA. Santana will definitely take this side to the Group stages of 2010 without Benni. I just feelthough that the team should be more representative wrt the demographics of this country
Anonymous User6/26/2009 7:42 AM
anonymouys 7:19 , no one gives a sh!t about you !!!
another bulls fan6/26/2009 7:39 AM
@ Anonymous 7:19. It must be really terrible to wake up and be so bitter and angry first thing in the morning. Well done Bafana, you have gained another supporter.Your preformance was nothing short of brilliant.
Luke6/26/2009 7:39 AM
What a brilliant game by Bafana!!! Hopefully this will be the start of great support for the team. Everybody, get out there and support Bafana at every opportunity from now on!!! 2010 here we come.
Anonymous User6/26/2009 7:37 AM
u can't win if you dont score...
Anonymous User6/26/2009 7:37 AM
why are bafana 71 something on fifa ranking ?
Anonymous User6/26/2009 7:37 AM
WELL DONE BOYS ,YOU'VE DONE US PROUDE ,BUT OUR COACH NEED TO SUBTITUTE ON TIME BUT SANTANA HAS DONE WELL SO FAR
mingas6/26/2009 7:36 AM
Bafana played excellently well but Santana should learn to use his substitutes wisely and earlier. he gave Brazil too much respect otherwise we should have won that game.
Theuns6/26/2009 7:35 AM
You made us proud and I'm sure Brazil have a new respect for Bafana !!! They were lucky to beat us Good job Bafana you proved that your a world class team! Excellent!! :)
Tsepo ko Benoni6/26/2009 7:31 AM
Why Santana? Why wait for so long to make substitutions. Modise was flat and Elrio was there to add more speed going forward in the second half. Parker as well struggled and Mashego or Mphela could have added new fresh legs. Overall the Boys Played Very, Very Well. One wished if Chippa Masinga or Mark Williams were there to kill off the game for us. I hope all the players who never played so far will get a run against Spain so that we can see what they are capable of.
BB6/26/2009 7:31 AM
@ Garth Strachten, you sound more like a wan#@$#r. Go Bafana!
ZM6/26/2009 7:26 AM
What a game! I am a proud South African even more after yesterday's game, Brazil thought it was going to be a walk over but you guys played with your heart and represented your country very well, its just a goal difference but to us you are still champs, lets keep Santana nd make our team even stronger, we will be in the finals next year. Halala Bafana Bafana
Anonymous User6/26/2009 7:25 AM
What a match, well done Bafana. Impressive performance. Coach keep up the good work
Michael Bowery6/26/2009 7:25 AM
Well done Bafana. There's no shame in losing when playing with such heart and style.
Anonymous User6/26/2009 7:25 AM
WOW! It sounds like they won! hahahaah! Losers!
impressed fan6/26/2009 7:24 AM
I hope all the Bafana Bafana and Santana critics are silenced today... We really hold our part of the deal, by supplying excellent African style football... Yes, we are not close to where we are suppose to be, but we are getting there... Even with the loss, you guys made the country proud. viva-bafana-bafana!!!

Great game, well played Bafana, made me proud, the game could have gone either way. With a bit more practice Bafana will be a team to recon with in the World Cup. (Not like the Proteas!) Viva Bafana.
Bobkot6/26/2009 7:20 AM
You go Bafana. THAT display was brilliant. We were robbed. A team that plays like our guys deserved the win. You were beaten one good kick. You dominated, I'll definately be watching you again. You made us PROUD. More of that and you'll have the whole country behind you.
Rugby fan6/26/2009 7:20 AM
Bafana you have made this rugby-loving South African VERY proud!!! Well done on an excellent performance, if you keep this up you will gain LOTS of new supporters.
Anonymous User6/26/2009 7:19 AM
It's so typical!!! Ur stupid BANANA BANANA supporters will always be satisfied with coming second best!! If they were so good, why did they not beat Brazil, and remebember, they did not qualify for the semi's coz they played good, they went thru due to poor play by other teams!!!! I will never support a black team!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Rob6/26/2009 7:16 AM
WELL DONE BAFANA BAFANA!!!! I'm so impressed i can't tellyouand equally proud of you guys!!! Nice work Joel, you shaping a great team.

Well done boys. From a Bulls supporter.
Anonymous User6/26/2009 7:14 AM
Did you ever think that Brazil will lose? Brazil will win in the final. Spain will teach SA a lesson how to score goal.
Anonymous User6/26/2009 7:13 AM
I sat watching the game last night with a group of people that LOVE SA, who support SA rugby and cricket with passion, but who only really recognize two players from our soccer team. We are a group that are embarrassed to admit we know more about English, European and other national teams than we do our own. That said we were shouting louder than we generally do at Newlands watching the bokke! Well done Bafana - you did SA and yourselves proud and won the support of a doubting nation last night! 2010 here we come!
Royal Tee6/26/2009 7:12 AM
Well done Bafana, I see a bright future. I'm not disappointed, not at all. Bafana proved names do not play football.
Anonymous User6/26/2009 7:12 AM
Wow what a performance, breath taking stuff, who are those boys that played for Bafana Bafana last night? Is it the same team wow? Great experience people we finally have a national team that we can all be proud of. Brazil really looked ordinary did they? That’s what Africa soccer is all about….love you boys.
Os6/26/2009 7:06 AM
not being a soccer fan thank you for such a great game may you continue in this super form.
Jerry6/26/2009 7:04 AM
Brilliant bafana we just need someone to hit that goals
Lee-ann Govender6/26/2009 7:02 AM
Well done Bafana you did the nation proud and you played with your heart & soul. Good Luck for the World Cup
Douglas6/26/2009 7:02 AM
Well done Bafana and hard luck in the end! But what you have won is the support of many proud South Africans with your courageous battle against the Brazillians! GO BAFANA BAFANA FOR THE 2010 SOCCER WORLD CUP!
Anonymous User6/26/2009 7:01 AM
At last positive feed back from us the people of the Republic, our boys really played well and yes the world was watching and we made one of the best teams in the world to look ordinary. Like we said previously lets respect them to disrespect them they only human after all. Well done Bafana Bafana
Star6/26/2009 6:59 AM
Well done Bafana, u make south africa broud. Now SAFA the ball is in your court to organise more high profile game for this team MR Santana put together, we need these team for new year wc, not much of the teams will beat us here
Sean Ginindza6/26/2009 6:56 AM
Excellent passing and a brilliant display of relentless drive...i'm putting money on Bafana next year!!!
Bishop6/26/2009 6:51 AM
Excellent, excellent, excellent!!!!! Keep it up Boys - and well done!
Da Brudda6/26/2009 6:47 AM
@ Anonymous 25/06/2009 10H59PM - forget fat assed, arrogant Benni - we need to develop what we have on offer. Benni only plays in his own interests. One thing puzzling me though - why did Santana wait so long to make a sub?? - should have made a change to the frontline alt least 15 minutes before the end. We were running out of ideas up front and needed to have something different up front - otherwise well played Bafana!!
Rugby Supporter6/26/2009 6:40 AM
I would like to congratulate Bafana Bafana on their performance last night.- they played excellent. As indicated I am not really a soccer (or football) fan and in the past when I watched them they looked like they did not know what they were doing but the last couple of games were great. I hope the country now get behind them as they have earned our respect. Go Bafana !!!
lionheart6/26/2009 6:37 AM
Excellent Bafana,just require a decent strikeforce,COSATU?
Anonymous User6/26/2009 6:34 AM
the performance displayed last night by our BOYS made me more proud than the win against the Kiwis last week. I was expecting stage fright - none, I was expecting a defensive game - none. Ball possesion was almost equal for the entire game at some point we had more shots on goal than Brasil - Siyabonga Bafana - excellent performace, I think despite the loss, you have silenced your critics.
WENDY6/26/2009 6:26 AM
I am so proud. Best you have ever ever played.
Kagiso6/26/2009 6:14 AM
I'm so proud of Bafana. WELL DONE GUYS! Santana keep up the good work, we'll support you all the way to 2010!!
Werner6/26/2009 6:09 AM
Well done Bafana! It made me very proud to watch you guys play with your hearts again. I've been looking forward to a match against Brazil for a long time. Keep going its a great foundation for 2010!
FelixTheCat6/26/2009 5:57 AM
I can't remember the last time I felt so proud. Well done done Bafana and well done Santana!! We have so much talent and we got to see all of it on display today. South African soccer is moving in one direction. Forward.
marcelo Pimentel6/26/2009 5:46 AM
Come on guys!!!you guys just lost...and u are proud of the team?? you know who thinks like that? So they can just play "well" and lose, and that will be enough? answer:LOSERS make no mystakes If brazil play 10 matchs agains SA we would win 9 and the other one would be 0x0.Because u guys have to idea how to score a goal.
Peter6/26/2009 5:24 AM
Well played Bafana Bafana, an excellent performance. Well done Santana. And no to Benni, he is a bad influence.
Taaibos6/26/2009 4:21 AM
Well done to Bafana but I think it's about time now we start to look aside on our skipper(Mokoena). He's played his part as a good player and also a good leader. It's about time now we try someone new on his(Mokoena)position. To Santana,he must learn to quickly read the game as to when to make substitutions. After all Bafana remains a good squad and Santana rocks!!!!
Anonymous User6/26/2009 4:03 AM
I see many people here saying Brasil played poorly, well as a brazilian I must say we didnt played poorly, it is just the fact that South Africa played really well, not giving spaces, marking every key player. It was a good reading of the game by Joel and a fantastic tactic discipline, plus the strength and speed of African football. I am sure that if SA play this way against Spain and dont miss the shots, you´ll leave the pitch with a victory, well done, congratulations to all players, we all knew how hard it was going to be.
Luiz Mendes Jr6/26/2009 3:23 AM
I´m Brazilian. We sure weren´t expecting this game to be so tough. That goal is one to remember for years to come. Reminded me of Petkovic winner against Vasco da Gama. Joel Santana did a good job, but his strategy would only work on making the game even until you scored the first goal. Once we scored, as it happened, everything would be opened for a larger margin. If we scored that goal at 70´, we would probably score a second or a third. So, it wasn´t really an even game in all senses. Would be if u had conditions to recover after taking a first goal, as any big team would, or Brazil against SA, as Brazil would still be in the game while you would be all defense until the end. Even tough, Bafana did a very good job today. Could definitelly have won the match. Congratulations, Joel!
mrevinho 066/26/2009 3:18 AM
good work boys and big up santana
Emiliano6/26/2009 2:14 AM
Congratulations South Africa. It was a really great game. A lot of opportunities to score in both sides. Joel Santana is doing a great job. We want to see bafana beating spain. Emiliano - Brazil.
Carlos Queiroz6/26/2009 2:14 AM
Congratulations Bafana. You have played very well and was really unlucky to lose in the last minutes. Greatings from Sao Paulo - Brasil
Craig Carr6/26/2009 1:39 AM
Bafana you made me so proud to be a Safa today and it shows that with the help of Santana we are becoming a force to be recond with....
Anonymous User6/26/2009 1:30 AM

WELL DONE Bafana Bafana!!!!! You have proved that you will be a force to reckon with in 2010 :). I am so proud of you!!!

Missed the game but from the radio it sounded like a tight match. Not a huge supporter of BB but I will say their game has improved and Well done to them.
Anonymous User6/26/2009 1:15 AM
Still lost and that makes them losers. There can be only one winner.

Thami Sibanda6/26/2009 12:47 AM
Well played, well done. We have a team for next year, Mr Santana, please learn to use the substitutes.

Well done BAFANA. You made us proud.
Chris6/26/2009 12:12 AM
Go boys what a showing. Makes me proud to be a South African football supporter.
Jannie6/25/2009 11:56 PM
You guys made us proud. The German commentators were full of praise for your efforts and it was nice to be a S'Effrican on a visit here and hearing all that. Great game by all players. Anybody's game, but for a regrettable small mistake Aaron! Your guts won you a lot of support from your fellow compatriots!
Birdman6/25/2009 11:52 PM
What a fantastic performance Bafana! Unlucky, but in my eyes you were the winners - you outplayed Brazil - well done!
Soccer Fan6/25/2009 11:49 PM
What a match between SA and Brazil. The players brought their top game and the supporters were loud and proud. Now if only the organisers can come to the party. The game ended almost 2 hours ago - players, coaches and VIP's (incl LOC and Pres Zuma) are probably warm in their beds. Meanwhile, my husband and two young kids are still waiting for the park and ride to WITS in freezing cold. Not a nice way to end the evening!!!
Lebogang6/25/2009 11:47 PM
Bafana Bafana,we are proud of you.It is sad to loose after all the best you have delivered.Luck is not our side...Hope you give spain a run for their money.

I'm very impressed
The Jimber6/25/2009 11:47 PM
Fantastic effort by Bafana, it was an absolutely cracking atmosphere in Coca-Cola Park tonight and I'll proudly don my Bafana shirt at work tomorrow! Top marks to the boys, they played out of their skins!!!
Hebert6/25/2009 11:42 PM
That was excelent perfomance, great improvement, viva Bafana Bafana, viva Santana
Garth Strachten6/25/2009 11:36 PM
I am a South African but will never support Bafana Bafana. The team does not reflect the diversity of our nation. The team only represents about 82% of our nation. I support Brazil. Congrats to Brazil for winning against SA!
Jacques6/25/2009 11:36 PM
Man, I'm so proud of the team tonight, we were the better side though. We could upset Spain in the play-off match on Sunday.
Colin Rosenkowitz6/25/2009 11:21 PM
The way that Bafana played today against a poor performance by Brazil, I feel that if McCarthy was there we could have had that 1st goal and then really would have made the country more proud after a much improved performance by Santanas boys
Frans Mosia6/25/2009 11:15 PM
Well done Bafana it nearly worked, what a superb performance from you Bafana Bafana viva.
Phelan6/25/2009 11:11 PM
Nkosi Nkankulu guys! You had me on the edge of my seat for 88 minutes. You really silenced your critics! What a game! Pienaar, Modise, Tsabalala... You guys made Brazil scramble like I have not seen them scramble in quite a while! Very well done! I will be wearing my SA shirt with pride tomorrow!
Rob6/25/2009 11:11 PM
well done bafana. so unlucky not to take it into extra time. and if we were a little better at finishing we could have knocked brazil out. defence and midfield played really well
GM6/25/2009 11:07 PM
Well played Bafana. A performance to be proud of. You guys really worked hard. Nice passing and movement off the ball!
Bob6/25/2009 11:05 PM
Well done Bafana. You guys have made us proud!!!!

Good performance by Bafana, Poor performance by Brazil's standards. If Bafana can work on scoring goals, they might make it past the first round at the World Cup.

Who would of thought this is the same bafana team from last year. What an improvement. Good luck for next year..
