Chiefs not on panic stations

2012-08-06 21:13

Johannesburg - Kaizer Chiefs' general manager Bobby Motaung is not panicking after Amakhosi's stunning 4-1 MTN8 quarter-final defeat against Mamelodi Sundowns at Loftus Versfeld on Sunday.

"But we're all only human and capable of having an off-day. I don't think there is any cause to panic after one such experience," he said on Monday.

Motaung said the loss was certainly a shock.

"Losing is one thing. But conceding four goals in little more than the opening 30 minutes and virtually losing the game at this point is something else."

Motaung said the irony of Chiefs' demise against 'Downs was that new club coach Stuart Baxter had prepared the team meticulously all week before the match.

"[W]e thought we had covered all the bases in the process."

The Chiefs general manager suggested a degree of complacency might have crept in as a consequence. In addition, he explained that several new defensive players had been signed, and that they had not had enough time to form a cohesive unit.

"It was hard to believe," said Motaung, "that three of the four goals against us were scored following set pieces, and this is something elementary."

Ironically, following the signing of international stars Morgan Gould and Siboniso Gaxa, and with current Bafana Bafana No 1 goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune behind them, many in the Chiefs camp had boasted the club had an impregnable backline.

"Following the Carling Cup defeat against our traditional rivals, Orlando Pirates, the previous week, it is understandable that our army of supporters are feeling some pain.

"But remember we would have beaten Pirates had we not conceded a careless injury-time goal, and the penalty shoot-out defeat only materialised in a pre-season warm-up to the new season.

"I believe the hiccups will be eliminated before the start of the Premier League campaign against AmaZulu this weekend, and we'll get back on track.

"No need to panic," he repeated with conviction, revealing that Chiefs were busy making an additional one or two signings before the month-end transfer deadline.

We need another striker and fast. Parker is a disaster waing to happen.

      JAbu.R15 - 2012-08-07 07:54

Ja we need a hungry striker not the type that waits for balls to be passed to him! Chiefs should have taken nomvete when he came from overseas! SA as shortage of striker material.

  • joseph.mantsoe - 2012-08-07 07:33

I start 2doubt our coach capabilities, let's wait 4more games and I've never seen Svasiya n Ritchie as Chiefs Material.

  • JAbu.R15 - 2012-08-07 07:52

I thought Chiefs was gonna be a force to be recorned with this season, they won when playing in friendlies but now to be beaten 4-1? and whats worse to be told not to panic? chiefs used to be a cup specialists, even if they never won the league but they always won cup, they lost two already and we are still counting on! Bobby sorry boss but I think the whole technical team and the players must have pay cuts then we will see if they will remain the loose draw team!

And you wonder how Nengomashe was released while there is evidence of lack of authority in the midfield of this team. Their back four will always be vulnerable to teams whose strength is control of the middle. Their wing play especially on the right is almost non-existent and when Shabba is absent they're dead; why Yende had to be loaned out baffles me; and there is Erwin Isaacs and Clifford Ngobeni who would reinforce their midfield and give them better options. But again the intention of this team is to defend what they do not have...the best form of defence is attack. Whatever Bob is smoking is quite confusing him. Now is the time to PANIC uncle Bob.

Kaiser Chiefs celebrated 's club award winning and so many man of the match, forgetting that Khune is the last player to touch the ball after ten players in the field. They need check the quality of their players especially midfielders and strikers. Chiefs can't have development and again develop in their senior team.
