Johannesburg - Kaizer Chiefs executive chairman Kaizer Motaung on Friday denied any links between his club and Bafana Bafana's all-time leading goal-scorer, Benni McCarthy.
The 33-year-old remained clubless and was until earlier this week training with Ajax Cape Town to keep fit.
Reports stated that McCarthy was back in England to sort out personal affairs before returning to South Africa where he was likely to consider local offers.
Motaung said he did not know how McCarthy was associated with a possible move to Amakhosi who, on Thursday, unveiled current Bafana striker Bernard Parker as their new signing from F.C Twente in the Netherlands.
"I have seen these reports," said Motaung.
"But it's something of a mystery where they originated because our coach has expressed no interest in acquiring McCarthy's services and we've never discussed the issue."
The enigmatic McCarthy had two disastrous seasons with West Ham United in England that ended with the London club terminating his contract mid-season because he was overweight.
McCarthy's goal-scoring feats with Bafana were regularly punctuated by controversy during a generally tempestuous career.
He had spent 13 years in Europe where he played for Ajax Amsterdam in the Netherlands, Celta Vigo in Spain and Porto in Portugal, winning the Uefa Champions League in 2004 with the latter under charismatic manager Jose Mourinho.
He was excluded from Bafana's final 23-man team for last year's World Cup tournament after making the provisional squad.
