Messi could miss Champions League opener

Barcelona - Lionel Messi is a doubt for the opening match of Barcelona's 2016/17 Champions League campaign after aggravating a hamstring injury.

The striker aggravated the injury during Argentina's World Cup qualifier against Uruguay last week in which he netted the winner.

Messi was due to feature for Argentina against Venezuela on Tuesday, but instead returned to Spain over the weekend where he underwent scans on the injury.

The La Liga outfit have since released a statement indicating that there is no timetable for Messi's return, putting him in doubt for next Tuesday's Champions League clash with Celtic.

"Tests conducted today on Leo Messi have confirmed that the player is still having trouble with the adductor muscle in his left hamstring.

"He has been recommended to lighten his training load over the next few days and his availability will depend on how the issue progresses."

The news comes after Argentina boss Edgardo Bauza said that Messi defied the advice of Barcelona's doctors to return to action with Argentina, having reversed his decision to retire from international football after yet another Copa America disappointment.

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
