Zenit overpowers Porto

St Petersburg - Russian club Zenit St Petersburg moved to the top of Group G in the Champions League on Wednesday with a 3-1 victory at home against former winners Porto.

James Rodriguez opened the scoring for the visitors in the 10th minute when the Colombian international pushed the ball over the line from close range.

Roman Shirokov equalised for Zenit ten minutes later, shortly before Porto coach Pereira Pontes had to replace Kleber who picked up an injury.

Worse was to follow for the Portuguese club as Fucile was sent for an early shower for a second bookable offence in first-half injury time.

In the second half Zenit made the most of their numerical advantage and Shirkov gave them the lead in the 63rd minute before Portuguese international Danny put matters beyond doubt with a goal nine minutes later against his compatriots.

The win takes Zenit to three points in the group, ahead on goal difference of Porto and Apoel Nicosia, who face Shakthar Donetsk later on Wednesday.

No! I think the smart thing to do is start again with a younger skipper ...

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
