Twente stroll past Bremen

Bremen - FC Twente scored two late goals on Tuesday to beat 10-man Werder Bremen 2-0 for its first victory in Group A of the Champions League.

After Werder captain Torsten Frings was sent off in the 75th, Nacer Chadli scored with a deflected shot in the 81st and Luuk de Jong completed the victory in the 84th.

With five points from four matches Twente can still hope for a place in the second round. Bremen remains on two points and is all but eliminated.

Werder had most of the possession in the first half but the home side was lucky not to concede on Twente's counterattacks, mainly due to some good defending by Wesley, a midfielder playing out of position at left back because of Werder's many injuries. Wesley twice stopped Marc Janko's solo runs.

Bremen's best opportunity came from Claudio Pizarro, but his low shot his the post.

Twente replied with Chadli delivering a free kick to the far post but Bryan Ruiz produced a poor header despite being left unmarked. Another chance went begging when Chadli shot high over the bar.

Chadli had another good opportunity early in the second half but his deflected shot was blocked by Werder's goalkeeper Sebastian Mielitz.

Hugo Almeida then missed two straight chances for Werder, first heading from five meters (yards) straight at Nikolay Mihaylov and then allowing Twente's goalkeeper to steal the ball as he tried to round him.

Chadli was foiled again by Mielitz, who got a hand on Chadli's shot, just enough for the ball to hit the post instead of the net.

Frings got the red card for a pulling down Ruiz and Twente created a great opportunity from the free kick but Peter Wisgerhof fluffed his shot.

The pressure finally told when substitute Michael Schimpelsberger played the ball into space for Chadli and his low shot deflected off Daniel Jensen's leg and past Mielitz.

Ruiz then supplied the low cross and De Jong stooped to head past Mielitz and put the result beyond doubt.
