Pienaar will miss Madrid test

Johannesburg - Tottenham midfielder Steven Pienaar has confirmed his absence in Tuesday's Champions League tie with Real Madrid due to injury.

South Africa's new captain has been struggling with a groin problem that surfaced last month and is yet to heal.

'Schillo' turned out for his country in a 1-0 win over Egypt during the international break, which seems to have flared up the niggle.

"Out for the Madrid game. Groin still not right," he communicated via his Twitter account.

Pienaar was on the bench for Saturday's goalless draw with Wigan at the DW Stadium but he did not feature.

No! I think the smart thing to do is start again with a younger skipper ...

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
