Lyon edge past Schalke 04

Lyon - A Michel Bastos first-half goal earned Olympique Lyon a 1-0 home win against 10-man Schalke 04 in their Champions League Group B opener on Tuesday.

Bastos benefited from some poor defending to net a dull game's only goal midway through the first half against the run of play.

He intercepted a header from Christoph Moritz back to Manuel Neuer, lifted the ball over the German keeper and it creeped over the line despite Benedikt Hoewedes's attempt to clear under pressure from the Brazilian winger.

Seven minutes before the interval, centre back Hoewedes picked a straight red card for a rough tackle on Jimmy Briand.
