Fergie slams 'suicidal' United

2009-03-12 06:51

England - Sir Alex Ferguson claimed Manchester United had flirted with Champions League suicide in their 2-0 win over Inter Milan on Wednesday.

Despite watching his side advance to the last eight at the expense of the Italian league leaders, Ferguson was left fuming over what he described as the "reckless" way in which his players relinquished control of the match after taking a fourth-minute lead through Nemanja Vidic.

"It was one of those long European nights where you don't know if you're watching a game of football or watching a game of suicide," Ferguson said.

"After scoring the first goal, I thought we would go on and kill them. But after going ahead we started trying to put icing on the cake and we were lucky to be in front at half-time."

Ferguson added: "I thought we could score a few goals but then we started doing flicks and back heels, hitting balls into space where no one was.

"It was really reckless football and it allowed Inter Milan to get a grip of the game. From the middle of the first half to the end of the first half they were the better team."

Despite his frustration, Ferguson took heart from the fact that his side had come through a tough tie.

"We changed the system at half-time, closed the door on (Esteban) Cambiasso and we were a bit better in the second half," the Scot added.

"We played a team at its maximum, potential-wise with all the experience they have. And they played to their maximum.

"To get through that tonight was a big plus for us, because we will be better in the next round. We can play better than that but I am happy to get through it."

Fergie's right, United were not all that convincing. Unusual to see so many passes being overhit, and them loosing possession like that... Keep it up till Saturday won't you? Haha

  • K.J.T - 2009-03-12 07:56

Morning Lads: Fergie is right by claiming UTD had luck not to concede last night , however that is what you need to win the Champs League. I feel who ever meets Porto will have a easy passage through as for the rest of the draw it is mouth watering ties ahead of us. This week-end Liverpool will be brought crashing down to earth. VIVA UNITED

  • thohieda - 2009-03-12 08:13

Where are you know Liverfools!!! See ya on Saturday! Hie-Ha!

  • Anonymous User - 2009-03-12 08:24

whatever, i guess you're a liverfool supporter anyway Saturday we will see the turmoil we cause liverfool, it's all about trafford you idiot.

  • Philip du Plessis - 2009-03-12 08:24

@Carlsberg, keep dreaming about Saturday boet. Consider the time when our passes actually find space against you, and consider the fact that our midfield/strikers are clicking really well. If I was you I would be having some sleepless nights about the fact that Ronaldo has his scoring boots on. See you Saturday, and I sincerely hope that the Liverfool supporters post on Monday, because you can believe I am going to be gloating like none....

  • AIG - 2009-03-12 08:25

United playing at 40% and hammering Italian champions 2-0. I think Jose was lucky that we under performed.... Came at a good time though, because they will learn from their mistakes and show that they have when they play a Liverpool on Saturday. All good I say. LIverpool wont know what hit them, and I am hoping we get drawn against them too in the Champions League for good measure to prove who the best in England is. Your time is coming, and you know it Liverpool.

  • Anonymous User - 2009-03-12 08:38

They were flirting with danger, but the lads stuck it out and now we are looking forward to Sat.

  • Anonymous User - 2009-03-12 08:44

His selection was the key to yesterday’s performance I think for one the midfield needed park sooner than he was introduced and as usual CR7 was at his best, Rooney good shooting out of box and the centre-backs were outstanding and I would have liked to see Tevez being introduced in the second half, but 2 goals was good enough to stabilize the midfield, Rooney was in an attacking winger position he did his best in that position for the day

  • United - 2009-03-12 08:52

Boils down to the fact that we beat the Italian champions and log leaders with relative ease. Grinding out results is what true champions do. And as for saturday Carlsberg....do remember its the PREMIER LEAGUE on saturday....and liverpool can't play in it to save their lives...expect a mauling. Madrid werent't the Madrid of old nobody can argue with that. Most teams would of flattened them, even arsenal.

  • Glory Man Utd - 2009-03-12 08:56

Yeah sure there were some incomplete passes etc. but when Man Utd just look like they going to score they did except for O'Shea. It was like Man Utd was messing, teasing Inter Milan. Glory Glory Man Utd!!!!

  • Xolani - 2009-03-12 09:04

I hope Man U keep up with the stray passes and uncoordinated moves and Liverpool keeps up with their fantastic fighting spirit. Cant wait till Saturday for the big clash.

Great game by united. BUT CAN SOME1 PLEASE TELL FERGIE TO PUT TEVEZ ON THE PITCH SATURDAY INSTEAD OF BERBATOV. berbs is a waste of time up front.

keep dreaming all u Pool supporters! We are still on track for 5 major trophies and wat are you guys in the running for? Come saturday i reckon LFC is gonna get a lesson on how a Championship side should perform!!! Glory Glory Man United!!! my prediction for saturday 2-0 to united!!!

  • SHAKES - 2009-03-12 09:24

thanx for the win, but i think players should not do what they did by allowing inter into the game and tackles around eighteen areas, such set pieces are very dangerous and could bring the oppositon into the game. please rooney must stop bieng emotional and play fair, his also an asset to man u.

  • Fred the Red Devil - 2009-03-12 09:25

I find it amusing how everyone want to be an expert on football and sport in general when for the most part most of us can't even pass a ball properly.Let the professionals do there jobs they are a the pinacle of the highest level in football.Man U are amazing and Fergie is a genius the best English and probably club manager of all time.Liverpool you have nothing besides your ancient history, you've never even won 1 single Premiership.United are the best football side in the world currently and in the past! Were going to whip Liverpool into submission on Saturday...bring on the quantiple!

  • logan - 2009-03-12 09:32

all you liverfools can dream on....there's only one team and that's UNITED...liverpool's performance is very inconsistant.....they must still win at least one Premier League title.

  • Anonymous User - 2009-03-12 09:36

Im a Liverpool fan but with United having two trophies in the bag already and us still continuing to back useless RAFA BENITEZ even a win this Saturday against MANURE UTD is neither here nor there because we will be 4 points adrift and might have to face them in the champions league! That means the league is in the bag for them too because Manure UTD is the leader in manure so the rest of the manure sellers in the rest of the league are not going to outdo it as we would need to happen to take the league..all thanks to RAFA's "science of the successive draw" playbook! I see why he didnt get the top coaching job at REAL...all BLAH BLAH BLAH and no league!

  • UTD Fan - 2009-03-12 09:50

As a united fan, I must say last nights performance to that of 2 weeks ago, was scary, especially after watching the way Liverpol played against Real on Tuesday. It's gonna be a good game to watch and hope the red devils play out of their skin if they are going to beat a liverpool team in that form.

  • mnryusti - 2009-03-12 10:12

as usual, King Fergie is spot on, Comforting to know though that not concentrationg for the full 90 minutes we were still able to get passed the Italian champs 2-0!

  • shaun - 2009-03-12 10:28

To all the critics, lets wait for Saturday's game and see who comes out tops, Liverpool will beat Man Utd on saturday and that is a guarantee, and we will close down the gap on the league as well

  • dbngirl - 2009-03-12 10:37

I think you guys should give them a break! No one is perfect all the time and the fact is they still won - even with the shortcomings.

  • GeePMB - 2009-03-12 10:53

Man U wont lift 5 trophy's, They will come unstuck against Everton in the FA Cup. Everton, the Pride Of Merseyside, the side that dumped one lot of red shites out of the FA cup already! "And if you know your history... it's enough to make your heart go oooh ohhh ohhh oohhh....."

  • Anonymous User - 2009-03-12 11:05

When MAN(URE) UTD take the league they have my permisssion to drop a minimg dump truck of manure on RAFA BENITEZ! Liverpool fans should be more like Orlando Pirates sometimes and start up up the UCWB ( Useless Coach Whipping Bus)....make him run for his life at Anfield like Igesund! HAHAHAHA!

  • olo - 2009-03-12 11:18

Why are manu fans complaining, i'm one too and lets just be glad we one over a mourinho led team

  • Pool fan - 2009-03-12 11:28

You United fans need not be so hostile towards us Pool fans because Fergie will problably go down in history as one of the best coaches ever but he is not immortal - what will happen to united post fergie? Liverpool is still the most succesfull team in england and it is only due to some avarage coaches being appointed and bad bad player buys that we are not as good as united. the fact that all 4 english teams made it through to the quarters says a lot about english clubs in europe but i would not place my bets on united winning the champions league just yet. even if you should beat us on saterday, which i hope will not happen, you better hope that we do not have to face each other in the champions league because there rafa will for certain beat fergie.

  • Anonymous User - 2009-03-12 11:50

OLO- trust me MAN UTD was never in any danger from Mourinho...he like RAFA is all blah blah blah...Im the special anus...blah blah blah and then doesnt deliver!

All these big mouthed Man U supporters , plenty silverware but no humility or class.

  • Anonymous User - 2009-03-12 12:59

Pool Fan ; it's odd for you to say that Liverpool is the most successful team in England but in the same breath say that they are not as good as United. What does that make United???

  • Anonymous User - 2009-03-12 13:20

here we go with the exscuses inter played bad blah bloody blah isnt it funny how liverfool demolished an un performing real madrdid but dont think it neccesary to say that we beat inter and all of a sudden they were leaving their finishing san siro i swear the denial you scousers have is ridiculous see someone about it i swear it makes me sad for my daughter

  • Anonymous User - 2009-03-12 13:36

LIVERPOOL is the most successful because despite dominating english football recently from 1990 to 2009 (20 years) all MAN UTD has doing is chase the three record we already held since the 1980's...we have still won the league the most times (18) FA cup(7) and the Champions league (5)...therefore despite Liverpools bad form since Graeme Souness took over and a long succession of luke warm idiots including RAFA we are still the team to beat. If you dont know this then you probably joined United circa 1990 when MNET starting selling decoders cheap enuff for the riff raff to see REAL football....dont be ashamed...all South African Man UTD supporters came along yesterday!

  • the kop (original) - 2009-03-12 14:12

  • Achmed The Dead Terrorist - 2009-03-12 14:27

If Shiverfool, soory I mean liverfool, sorry again liverpool are so great why do they always lose the league. They could not even hold on to their lead. All i hear from you fools is blah blah blah blah....see you all on sunday.

POOL FAN THIS IS FOR YOU ,FIRST LEARN HOW TO SPELL SATURDAY COS THATS A DAY YOU WILL NEVER FORGET

  • Anonymous User - 2009-03-12 14:52

WELL SAID anon user @ 1.36pm ! But one correction, the one PROPER trophy manure do have more of than us is the FA Cup - we have more of everything else, and Fergie himself admitted recently that manure need to try to match our number of European cups. Maybe this CWC will become something important in future, since manure are currently milking it - no one even cared about it before ? Funny how when we were winning the league cup over the last few years it was a "tin" cup, now that they have won it, it's something special, hahaha

  • Anonymous User - 2009-03-12 21:00

AH well pardon the FA cup oversight. MAN utd supporters are usually silent when you point out to them that 99% of their local support are not even old enough to drive let alone know who coached MAN Utd before Ferguson....(I can jst hear the idiots rushing off to google to find out)PATHETIC--..the beauty is that when the tide turns there will be not one AIG shirt in sight either cos the pimply faced freaks have decided to support the latest fad team like chelsea or AIG is liquidated.....HAHAHAHHA...BEER is recession proof...Glory Glory Glory Carlsberg!

  • Anonymous User - 2009-03-13 07:49

to liverpool fans fire Rafa & you might win the league in another 20 years....from the Pride of Old Trafford

  • Vinny - 2009-03-13 08:26

Dont you Man U & Liv. supporters realise that neither of the teams will win the chamions Cup.The greatest teams are Real and Milan and history proves that although the English have been superior of the last 2/3 cups. Liv is too unpredictable and scrappy , too many niggling injuries and everything revolves aroung Stevie - now thats a player that deserves accolades a match winner a real player , rather have him than Christiano . But Man unit is cruising too easily and they did not deserve to go thru against Inter on the second leg - Puit the money on Chelsea boys.

  • olo - 2009-03-13 09:37

Now regardless of the outcome of saturday's titanic clash, manu r going to make 3 league titles in a row, we own england. Liverpool fans plz shut up, u havn't won the title since west germany were world champions and stop living in the past. Chelsea will take another 50 years to the title again

  • Anonymous User - 2009-03-13 09:51

the kop original: bonehead im surprised you can spell liverpool and as much as you'd like to deny it real played badly against liverfool scream and shout all you want you kid i can see you know banging your head on the floor in a fit of DENIAL come saturday we'll see just because you beat us once dont think its a habit and im pretty sure you wouldnt know what the kop end looked like if it danced naked in front of you wearing Rafa's tutu and some people talk about uniteds young fans 1990 is alot older than 2005 when all the scousers crawled out the woodwork and started singing even then liverfool didnt even have close to the season united are having at the moment and has had before whats the sound oh THE TRIPLE whats that sound LIVERPOOL SAYING NOTHING and now youre gonna probably start quoting statistics from the 1900's which just goes to show how deep you have to dig to try remind yourself that liverpool is better sorry loser but your just wrong so go home change your diaper clean the spit off your dummy and if your good and keep the tantrums to a minimum perhaps we'll let you have a beer on saturady to console yourself for not winning

  • ABIE - 2009-03-13 09:57

Liverpool FAN/Supporter-Ja manu is now joining us as one of the gretest teams of all time.you have a good coach in fergie thats basically the difference between our 2 teams.just to let it out there manu has won more world club cups and the treble - and for that reason alone i put them in our company as a great team.On the manu clash I can with 100% confidence say we will win manu as thie season only those teams who have asks questions of united on the field have gone on to win or draw them.We have about a essays leght of question awaiting manu on matchday.Plse remember that we only lost 2 games this season in the league - probably due to underestimating the opponents.Yes we have not done well in the league of late(years) but that is due to the players and coach alike focusing more on the bigger accolade of uerope.I think the seff blater suggestion to limit foreign player in a champions league side should be adhered to as the english league should actually be called the world league as most top teams have more foreign legion in their lineip than local guys us included. games on cheers
