Munich - Bayern Munich eased into the quarter-finals of the Champions League by crushing Sporting Lisbon 7-1 on Tuesday.
Lukas Podolski scored twice in the first half as Bayern completed a 12-1 victory on aggregate.
"We wanted to show from the start who is the boss here," Bayern coach Juergen Klinsmann said. "We didn't want to allow any sloppiness and to let them score first."
"I think they noticed that. We took the game seriously and we had a lot of fun," he said.
Podolski drove home from the edge of the area in the 7th minute after Bayern won possession following a poor pass by defender Anderson Polga. Ze Roberto fed Podolski, who fired a left foot into the roof of the net to set the tone early in the match.
Bayern captain van Bommel then tested Sporting goalkeeper Rui Patricio with a shot from the edge of the box. Patricio dropped the ball, but Klose hit the post with the rebound.
Podolski got his second in the 34th when Patricio and Polga collided while trying to clear, allowing the German international to shoot the loose ball over the keeper and into the empty net.
Polga capped a disastrous first half by putting the ball into his own net from a Bayern corner six minutes before the break.
Joao Moutinho notched Sporting's only goal with a 20 meter (yard) shot beyond the outstretched arm of Bayern goalkeeper Hans-Joerg Butt who was playing his first official match in 13 months.
Bayern replied immediately when Christian Lell broke down the right flank and put the ball back for Schweinsteiger to score from close range.
Butt denied Simon Vukcevic with a good save in the 67th.
Klinsmann then brought on Mueller, recently promoted from the junior ranks, and he created Bayern's fifth goal with a fine run on the right and high cross. Klose could not get off a proper header but managed to lay the ball off for van Bommel, who controlled it with his right foot and then slammed it into the net.
Pedro Silva downed Klose to give away a penalty and the Bayern striker converted it for his seventh goal in the Champions League.
Mueller completed the rout by prodding the ball into the net from a melee after a Bayern corner in the final minute.
