Ancelotti: We deserved win

Cape Town - Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti is convinced his side were deserved victors against Ludogorets on Wednesday, despite labouring to a 2-1 win over the European minnows.

The Galacticos kicked off their Champions League title defence last month with a 5-1 hammering of FC Basel, but struggled to get going this week after falling behind to a seventh-minute Marcelinho opener, before Cristiano Ronaldo missed a penalty.

However, the Ballon d'Or holder was able to make amends soon after, this time successfully converting another spot-kick, although things continued to go awry for the Spanish giants when Javier Hernandez missed an open goal.

Ancelotti's men were finally able to put themselves in front 13 minutes from time thanks to Karim Benzema, and although it was anything but an inspired performance, the boss still believed his side were worthy winners.

"In general I'm very happy because we deserved to win, since we had a lot of chances to score. It was a good match," he told the club's official website.

"We had a hard time when we conceded the goal at the start, but we pressed up front, won back a lot of balls with our pressing and had a lot of chances."

No! I think the smart thing to do is start again with a younger skipper ...

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
