Celtic edge Stars in Cup derby

Bloemfontein - Bloemfontein Celtic reached the quarter-finals of the Nedbank Cup when they came back from a goal down to beat Free State Stars 2-1 at the Charles Mopeli Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Luyolo Nomandela put the home side ahead early in the first half, but Celtic responded after the break through strikes from Lyle Lakay and substitute Lennox Bacela.

After a quiet start to the game the opener arrived in the 19th minute when Nomandela controlled a high pass from Dove Wome on the left side of the box before beating Patrick Tignyemb with a low finish.

The visitors almost capitalised from a defensive error to find an equaliser in the 36th minute when Daniel Cardoso failed to clear the ball inside the box, but Mogorosi saw his curled shot slapped away by Kennedy Mweene.

In the 45th minute Wome created some space outside before firing towards the target, but his solid strike was deflected wide by Dominic Isaacs as Stars took their 1-0 lead into the break.

The second half started at a good pace with both sides looking to strike first, but Wome sent his long range effort over the crossbar before Johannes Motlhaping did the same at the other end two minutes later.

In the 59th minute Wome managed to get his freekick on target, but this time the Togolese international was denied by a good save from Tignyemb, who dived low to his right to push the ball wide.

Celtic found the equaliser out of nothing just six minutes later as Lakay beat Mweene with a well-struck shot from a long way out, taking advantage of acres of space outside the Stars penalty area.

Ea Lla Koto almost restored their lead in the 68th minute when Nomandela managed to break through the middle of the Celtic defence, but he was denied by a good block from Tignyemb.

The in the 85th minute Wome collected a pass from Nomandela on the edge of the box before drilling a low shot towards the target, but could only watch in agony as his effort went narrowly wide of the post.

With the match looking like it was headed for extra time, Bacela won a fair challenge with a defender and raced into the box before slotting the ball past the exposed Mweene to send his side into the last eight.
