Last weekend's Telkom Knockout final at the Moses Mabhida Stadium threatened to turn ugly after Bucs ace McCarthy exchanged some unsavoury words with Students coach Roger de Sa and his assistant, Eric Tinkler.
The incident has received heady coverage in the media, although the PSL, known for their stern approach to any situation that might tarnish the league's image, have so far remained tight-lipped over the recent events.
However, PSL prosecutor Ntietso Mofokeng has revealed he will be investigating the incident before making a decision on whether to take disciplinary action against the trio.
"I cannot say whether or not action will be taken. We first have to go through the report and then decide on whether or not to bring up charges," Mofokeng told Sunday World.
The exact exchange of unpleasantries is not fully known, although reports claim the scuffle was started when Wits assistant coach Tinkler directed a comment at McCarthy's weight - a known touchy subject for the former Blackburn and West Ham hitman.
That jab from the Clever Boys number-two sparked a furious retort from Bafana Bafana's record scorer, who fought fire with fire, claiming his financial wealth and title success far eclipsed that of both De Sa and Tinkler combined.
