According to the Soccer-Laduma website, McCarthy retired from football at the end of last season. Now the former Orlando Pirates man is looking to test the coaching waters and is doing so in Scotland.

Modia told STV that Celtic coach Neil Lennon confirmed that the former Ajax Amsterdam, Porto and Blackburn Rovers player can learn his trade at the club.

“Benni has most definitely retired. He is doing his badges,” said Modia.

“We spoke with Neil to see if it was OK and if he could learn at Celtic's training sessions.

“Neil said 'absolutely' and we are very happy he agreed.”

McCarthy was previously linked with a move to the Scottish giants while playing in Europe but never ended up at Parkhead.

The 35-year-old did, however, play against Neil Lennon with Celta Vigo in the 2002/03 season when Celtic made their way to the UEFA Cup final.
