Banyana name strong squad

Johannesburg - Banyana Banyana's coach Joseph Mkhonza named a strong 18-member squad on Thursday to travel to Zambia for their African Women's Championship (AWC) qualifier at the Nkoloma Stadium on Saturday.

The national senior women's squad was comprised mainly of the players who beat Tanzania 5-2 in an international friendly match played in Dar es Salaam last Sunday.

Cape Town Roses (Sasol league) midfielder, Nocawe Skiti replaces Refiloe Jane of Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies after Jane sustained an ankle injury during the Tanzania match.

"My selection of the current squad to face Zambia is based on the performance the players put up in Tanzania last weekend," said Mkhonza.

"I was really impressed with the girls and they applied all the techniques we had been working on in training."

"It's disappointing that Refiloe will not be part of us as she contributed a lot to our victory, however, we have a strong pool of players who will help us keep the winning momentum going."

The South Africans had a video analysis session of their game against Tanzania in an effort to rectify their defensive mistakes which saw them concede two goals.

The return leg against Zambia will be played on Saturday, June 16 at a venue still to be confirmed.

Banyana Banyana squad to take on Zambia:

Thokozile Mndaweni, Roxanne Barker, Nothando Vilakazi, Amanda Sister, Janine van Wyk, Zamandosi Cele, Gabisile Hlumbane, Lebogang Mabatle, Nocawe Skiti, Kylie-Ann Louw, Mary Ntsweng, Robyn Moodaly, Leandra Smeda, Amanda Dlamini (c), Noko Matlou, Sanah Mollo, Andisiwe Mgcoyi, Portia Modise.
