Bafana's AFCON hopes in tatters

Cape Town - Bafana Bafana's hopes of qualifying for next year's Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) are all but over after Cameroon beat Mauritania at the Stade Olympique in Nouakchott, on Friday evening.

Cameroon won 1-0 thanks to a Edgar Salli's 29th minute strike that proved to be the difference between the two sides.

The midfielder's first-half thunderbolt sealed the Indomitable Lions' place atop Group M.

As a result, Mauritania, South Africa and Gambia's only hopes of qualifying is by means of the one of two best second-placed teams with Bafana set to face the 'Scorpions' in Bakau on Saturday.

Kick-off is at 19:00.

As Group M currently stands, Cameroon have 11 points after 5 matches, with Mauritania on 7 after as many clashes.

Bafana and Gambia have 4 and 3 points, respectively, having played one fewer match.

In the final round of fixtures, Cameroon host Gambia while Mauritania travel to South Africa on September 3.
