Cape Town - Tributes have poured in for the late Bafana Bafana great John 'Shoes' Moshoeu, who passed away at Morningside Clinic in Johannesburg on Tuesday.

The African National Congress paid tribute to Moshoeu, who was a key and influential player in the Bafana Bafana squad that won the African Cup of Nations in 1996.

South Africa's ruling party extended its heartfelt condolences to the Moshoeu family, the South African Football Association and the entire football fraternity during this difficult time.

"To Shoes, we say, Hamba Kahle! Tsela Tshweu," read the statement.

Furthermore, the DA extended their sympathies to the Kaizer Chiefs legend.

"His imprint on South African football is indelible.

"Such was his popularity that skilful soccer stars in many townships were nicknamed after him."

Meanwhile, the EFF said that it would be "impossible to imagine victory at the historic African Cup of Nations of 1996 without the skill, precision, pace and brilliant goals delivered by 'Shoes'.

"There is no doubt that he is part of the generation of soccer players whose contribution to national pride and soccer itself remains unmatched to this day.

"John "Shoes" Moshoeu will go down in history as a shining star this 1996 generation whose impact on the imagination of the nation is of considerable value."

The IFP's spokesperson for sport and recreation, Nhlanhla Msimango, paid homage to the 1996 AFCON winner.

"South Africa’s football community is poorer with the loss of this talented star.

"The people of South Africa have lost an important figure who has done much for his country," said Msimango in a statement.

"We pray for his family, friends, fans and all those affected by his untimely passing to gather strength in this time of sadness. May his soul repose peacefully," he concluded.
