SAFA sacks vice president

Johannesburg - Suspended SA Football Association (SAFA) vice president Chief Mwelo Nonkonyana has been dismissed, the soccer body has announced.

SAFA was holding its 24th annual general congress in Johannesburg on Saturday.

Nonkonyana was suspended by SAFA in October last year following his comments that then Bafana Bafana coach Gordon Igesund should be fired if he failed to reach the final of the African Nations Championship (Chan) in January, earlier this year.

Bafana Bafana were dumped out of the tournament after the group stages and failed to qualify for the quarter-finals.

The congress moved for the recommendation by the national executive committee (NEC) that Nonkonyana be expelled from the Association.

A unanimous decision was taken to get rid of the controversial Eastern Cape official, by a show of hands, from the approximately 150 SAFA delegates.
