Johannesburg - Pitso Mosimane has revealed he wants Bafana Bafana to play a friendly against a top opponent before they tackle Niger in September.

South Africa can qualify for the African Nations Cup finals in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea next year if they come home from Niger with maximum points.

Mosimane is therefore not taking any chances ahead of the clash on September 3 and admits he will travel to Niamey himself to inspect the training and playing conditions.

"I am going to inspect those facilities and the pitch myself," he told Business Day. "That away game is absolutely crucial.

"That is one match that I cannot afford to take for granted. No way.

"We have to be serious about this one because this could be a qualifying decider."

The Bafana coach also revealed he wants his side to be tested thoroughly ahead of the trip and is hoping to organise a warm-up match against a team that will give the boys a stern examination.

"I have given my proposal to SAFA and we will see," he said concerning an August 10 date which will also be used to showcase the new national team strip.

"I really hope to play against a big, strong team that is ranked above Bafana on the world FIFA rankings. If we cannot get a team like that, then I will look around the continent."

Teams ranked above SA. Hmmm...let's see, maybe you can take your pick from some of these `giants' of the game: Japan, Montenegro, South Korea, Israel, The Republic of Ireland and .. wait for it .. Belgium.

why safa cant think the way we do

Do you know anything about football at all, Obama bin Laden? ...wait for it... Belgium has one of the most promising teams in Europe. Teams below us: Nigeria, Romania, Bulgaria, Senegal, Hungary... all with pretty decent international histories. You are a miserable bucket of whatsit, bitching about something you clearly don't care much for and are truly ignorant about. Your moronic nick gvies your game away.

Montenegro recently drew with england at wembley, ireland just beat italy & those other teams hav some really good players (yossi, kompany), so actually they wouldn't b bad fixtures 2 prepare bafans 4 niger.

I can ask Pitso to speak to Zimbabwe Football Association and ask them for a tough match. He also has to call his best and they bring their best and we will watch the battle of the Southern African Giants and I assure u that the stadium will b filled to capacity and I will also b there. Leave out Europe and the rest and take on a Southern African team, remember 'Chiefs & Pirates" r rivals, so is Zim & SA. Another alternative is to take on Zambia, who I think r on top of their game at the moment & would want to repeat their massacre which saw them scoring 3 against SA. Who wouldn't want to see "Musona" against "Khune", "Tshabalala against Nengomasha", just to mention a few. Khama Billiat, Nyasha Mushekwi, and some overseas based ones. Bring it on PITSO!!!!!!!!!!!!

      CITIZEN - 2011-06-10 00:08

with all due respect we need a tough match not a practice match will beat zimbabwe easily zambia sounds more like it if going for southern africa teams

    Arrange a friendly against germany

  • johannwerner - 2011-06-08 18:50

switzerland or russia will give us a chance to beat them and improve our ranking.

  • johannwerner - 2011-06-08 18:52

I also think england arent playing well and should be lower ranked but they are still a good team maybe with home advantage we could get lucky and beat them and watch our ranking shoot up.

Botswana has already qualified for the upcoming AFCON. Let them give us a game.

  • Lusindiso - 2011-06-09 09:48

How about we take on Uruguay, they are a tough team and we still need revenge on those bustards after what they've done to us during the 2010WC

SA needs to play a western African side away in order to prepare for the Niger fixture. What's the point of playing european countries in a good turf while preparing against an African team in difficult conditions?

  • iam.phonica - 2011-06-17 19:41

Belgium have a very good team, and its young. i.e. Romalu Lukaku, Eden Hazard, Kompany, Steven Defour. quality through grass-roots level developement that South Africa lacks.
