Pitso hails Teko and Khune

2010-10-12 09:16

Johannesburg- South Africa boss Pitso Mosimane saluted Soweto stars Itumeleng Khune and Teko Modise for their performances against Sierra Leone over the weekend.

Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Khune made some crucial stops at the back, while Orlando Pirates playmaker Modise - who was a late replacement for the injured Steven Pienaar - also impressed Mosimane in the 0-0 draw in Freetown.

"I do not like to single out players, but Khune made two brilliant saves that kept us on the game while the much criticised Modise was superb for the full 90 minutes," Mosimane said on Bafana's arrival back at OR Tambo Airport on Monday.

"I always had faith in Modise. Sierra Leone were dangerous on the left and Modise's experience was brilliant in snuffing out the danger from that area of their midfield.

"He showed again he is a top quality player. I knew he would not let me down. If he can come through this tough 90 minutes in Freetown then the PSL will be a piece of cake for him. I am happy to see his confidence is back."

Modise, a two-time PSL Footballer of the Year, has struggled for form since last year's Confederations Cup in June and was recently booed by Bucs fans in an MTN8 first leg semi-final clash with Chiefs.

Show the Modise! I always knew that you are the best. Thanks Bafana for the point it means a lot to SA's.

  • Seja - 2010-10-12 10:02

Ayeye my boy is back. Welcome back son.

  • afro-D - 2010-10-12 10:23

Hololo be careful of placing your bets on a lame horse, Pitso! Is Modise now a defender because he can't perform as a striker? How can Pitso talk about a good performance when it was AGAIN a goal-less affair? Teko Modise is just like Puff Daddy: over-rated, past his prime, and more hype than actual talent! Drop him. Give fresh talent the opportunity to shine. This muppet Modise has become a lame duck.

  • fan - 2010-10-12 10:27

Waze wasenza we-SABC, sebezoncoma wonkumunto ngoba nakhu phela asiybonanga i-game.

  • Syd - 2010-10-12 10:34

Pitso continues to look after his boy!! He is only saying this because no one in SA watched the match........... very opportunistic Pitso

  • Alan - 2010-10-12 10:40

Can't disagree with you - because I never saw the game! I am just thrilled we came away with a point.

  • Bucs Faithful - 2010-10-12 10:41

Congratulations to Jingles and the Boys for a job well done. As for Teko he has to help himself as much as you and Krol are trying to get him to his best. He need to be consistent at Bucs. Critics please give a break

  • Thami - 2010-10-12 11:05

Yes, we can't prove for sure Teko played well... He could be justifying his selection of Modise. Pitso can get away with the statement thanks to SABC for failing to broadcast the match... I will believe that when I see it. Modise can do well, he must just deflate his big head and inflate his football performance... We still need him, that much I agree.

  • Siwelelel - 2010-10-12 11:08

Modise and "Superb performance" in 1 sentence!!! I will hav 2 c dat 2 beliv it.

  • Pieter - 2010-10-12 11:39

Praise to the rest of the team. Welcome back to the "Navigator" hopefully all nay sayers get off your back. You are an asset, we have to reap the rewards of our investment in you as a nation. Next stop the Pharos.

  • Machine - 2010-10-12 12:05

Given the results our boys played well, forget about the justification of Teko 's selection.Wish Bafana the best.

  • @afro-D - 2010-10-12 12:06

Teko is not a STRIKER LOOOOOOOOSER! Teko is Back.

  • Aubrey - 2010-10-12 12:15

It really shows that your own fans can be your biggest enemy if you're out of form, Modise was free to play his normal game without fearing to be boed by his own supporters, let's stop this nonses and support our players

  • olebogeng matebesi - 2010-10-12 12:40

Teko is a dead man walking

  • invader - 2010-10-12 12:48

job well done to pitso and the boys especially for teko for regaining his confidence. and last special thanks for SABC for not broadcasting the game

  • George - 2010-10-12 13:04

This is an old encouraging technique been used by Pitso. It does not exist anyway and outdated. Name and shame is the way to go these days. Singing praises about Teko won't do anything to improve his fornm unless his told off when is not performing like the past two years. Personally I think Teko is not doing it and the rightful person Matthew Pattison deserves a chance. This saturday all will be exposed .. Go Mathew go sundowns

  • Thabo S - 2010-10-12 13:16

Bafana did well expecially because it was away game,i draw is fine for us. As for The general well done and can't wait to see you against Mamelodi Sundowns on Saturday. Shapa bucs

  • myjdjames - 2010-10-12 13:27

We'll have to take his word. Would have been interesting to see it for ourselves. THANKS SABC>

  • chuma - 2010-10-12 13:46

Now we r going to be fed lies bcoz we didn't see the game. Anyway, I can't wait for saturday's game so that I can see the mlungu (Pattison) teaching Pitso's son some football. AYEYE McFlurry

  • Ntokozo - 2010-10-12 14:43

Soccer fans and the media can be stupid sometimes, they just want to join the bandwagon and criticise all the time. When Teko has a bad game it is headline news, but when he does well they don't even want to report it, I remember the game against Wits after the booing incident he played very well in that game and even hit the post with a stunning freekick, Kick-off and Soccer Laduma didn't run their usual headlines they just ignored it, now Pitso wants to encourage good performance and people still want to complain, even though they admit themselves that they never saw the game.

  • vusi tyopo - 2010-10-12 14:50

cummon guys give modise a break. how is he to gain his confidence bk wit all this negativity, show the brother some love, he is only human after all

  • Bookworm aka crazy white woman - 2010-10-12 14:55

Go Bafana!!!! I knew you would make us proud even without the "big names" there you still did a good job. Well done Jingles, you picked a winning team! I managed to see some of the game on a very bad Freetown link & Teko played like a demon. Keep it up. Watch out USA, we are gonna kick your butt.

  • Bucs Faithful - 2010-10-12 15:11

@ olebogeng matebesi Dead shallow brains keep wishing

  • afro Dwit - 2010-10-12 15:39

I always wonder if some critics critisize based on facts or they just critisize because they grew up being critisized or that they are just not good @ anything. Thanks for the good comments, guys lets give bafana a break its not like mzansi is soccer powerhouse.we need to appreciate every good result we get.

  • ProudSAcan - 2010-10-12 15:57

PHD syndrome at its best by people who claim to be South Africans.

  • Tux357 - 2010-10-12 16:47

I always knew Teko had it in him to play gud football , a playa lyk Teko dsnt loose his form overnight , thnx Jingles 4 not loosing hope on ma BOY..... & 2 all the critics aniyazi idiski nina hambaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa....... Khosi 4 lyf..

  • Joe - 2010-10-12 18:28

there is a view that Teko is hated by Chiefs fans. that is rubish at its best. Teko is booed and hated by the fans of his own team "pirates". I think pirates fans must stop abusing this player. its actually stupid what they are doing. I am sure most of Teko's critics are from pirates

  • Jozana Boy - 2010-10-12 19:17

It amazes me how some people can claim to be soccer fans and be too blind to see Modise's talent, or is it jealousy at its best drunken state?

  • Nani17 - 2010-10-12 20:44

Pitso Pitso the public didn't watch the game so who can tell us about the perfomance of Tekoloshe besides you. You selected him and no one liked the idea you come out and say he played best futbol.Pitso you can;t say you made a mistake about selecting him you want us the public to think Tekoloshe is best no way. He has struggled for form since last year's Confederations Cup in June, 16 months later you say he played good game and the game that was not televised Pitso please.

  • Cityslicker - 2010-10-13 07:46

Only if the national broadcaster had shown the game "live' or "delayed live" would I only agree with Jingles when commenting about Modise.

  • Bucs Faithful - 2010-10-13 09:36

Teko Modise is a world class player thats why these critics always keep him on their radar. Teko is here to stay with the natioal team no matter what you pathetic hatters say.

  • Thato - 2010-10-13 10:52

  • bokamoso thubisi - 2010-10-13 12:25

thanks pitso and pirates fans you heard and we know teko verywell lets not hear romours from kaizer chiefs fans because they fear teko and they will always do! lets not give them power rather support our navigator.....

  • bokamoso thubisi - 2010-10-13 12:31

THANKZ pitso we all know the navigator he is the best player ever and his price tag is high also keep on having trust on him

  • LETONA - 2010-10-13 17:32

U cannot keep a good man down.Teko is experienced and talented, ours is just to encourage/support him just like Pitso.Once Kroll can give him a chance against Sundowns,he will realy do well."Teko is not a problem child,he is a child with a problem"Those are Irvin Khoza's words after meeting Teko some months back.I urge all the happy people and football lovers to support our players in trying times.Once a Pirates always Bakashushu.

  • Justsaying - 2010-10-14 10:45

I do not know why people keep bringing Mathew Petty's name up everytime Teko is selected for Bafana. First of all Teko is attacking player, he plays in Central Attacking Mid-Fielder and Wing. And as for Mathew, well he is clearly on form but Mathew is holding Mid-Fielder which more of a defensive role. My point is, the two players do not play the same role on the field. In team sports one selects the best play in the position. Seeing that Steve a.k.a Skillo is in the starting line up, it would only make sense to have Teko Modise on the bench because he is familiar with the Bafana set up, has beautiful proven combinations with Tshabalala and Katlego Mphela, plus he offers variety in the sense of the different positions he can play, he is fit and has international experience and yeah the Bafana players respect Teko that is why you often see him wearing the Captain's armband. One cannot expect PdV to replace that much critisized and contraversial Ricky Januarie with Francios Steyn because Ricky has had a few bad games. Or the Proteas Cricket Coach replacing Smith with Makhaya Ntini just because Makhaya has been getting a few wickets in the local circuit. Take a little time in understanding the sports that you love and follow with such passion.

  • Toxic - 2010-10-14 11:16

What form? Come on guys u also dnt believe what u sayin. Teko on form? are u ok up stairs? The dude has been off form for years. Now u want me to buy Pitso's hearsay. Pls shut your........ He can only play gud futball off-record and nothing more. Sent him to mvela where the cameras wont see him.

  • Mabure - 2010-10-18 15:50

People hate good s**t. The people who are saying Modise is dead are those who hated him when he was on top of his game and won the play of the season award, not to mention that he won it twice. Even if the player is now playing for the nation team they still don't want him because they don't support Pirates. Many players have lost form before and there was no hullabaloo about it. Now that it's Teko they are yadayadaring. Them bloody agents! Haters aside, Modise is good and no one will take that away from him like it or not. All I can say to Modise is; he must keep his head high and forget about the critics they'll always be there.

  • collen - 2010-10-19 11:15
