Cape Town - Everton midfielder Steven Pienaar has declared his sadness following the death of international teammate Senzo Meyiwa on Sunday night.
The 27-year-old Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana goalkeeper was shot dead while trying to protect his girlfriend during an armed robbery close to Johannesburg.
"First of all, I want to express my sincere sympathy to Senzo’s family and friends at this very sad time," explained Pienaar, in a statement.
"To lose your life at a young age when you have so much ahead of you is tragic and very difficult to understand.
"Senzo was a very talented goalkeeper who was well liked by team-mates and opponents alike.
"Our nation has lost a popular sportsman and he will be sadly missed."
