Pienaar out of Bafana clash

2012-06-12 07:53

Johannesburg - Bafana Bafana caretaker coach Steve Komphela decided to let five players leave the squad ahead of their international friendly against Gabon on Friday.

Captain Steven Pienaar, striker Katlego Mphela, midfielders Oupa Manyisa and Thanduyise Khuboni as well as defender Bongani Khumalo will all miss out on the clash at the Mbombela Stadium.

The players left after the squad's training session on Monday evening.

"We are left with one match, having played two already. Initially we called-up a big squad because we had three back-to-back clashes and wanted to have cover in various positions in case of injuries," said Komphela.

"We have seen what the five that we released can give us, and now this is a chance to have a look at other players.

"At the same time we also had to reserve some respect to the opposition and not make wholesale changes to our squad.

"We still need continuity and we believe the players that are remaining will provide the needed balance to tackle Gabon on Friday."

i dont know what m.r Khomphela must be doing now or what he thinks he's doing, he simply buries us for the last time now

agreed! - doesnt he want to WIN the last match? ohh, but I forget that the coach doesnt need to win, produce results or anything as a matter of fact, just needs to sit there and wait for the golden handshake!

Let's give him chance to prove himself . Maybe he gonna qualify , because those guys played all games but no mouth watering results . Let's stick on changes not history of man . Either the less he is bringing change , there we can see after that .

Leaving Steven Pienaar out of the Bafana side is insanity. Yes, there are young up and coming players who need play time, but leaving out one of the country's most experienced players is just plain stupid.

      good decision steve

      Tarriq - 2012-06-12 12:27

This game is a friendly, not a World Cup Qualifier. So I think he does not see it as important. But based on our previous performances, we need to arrange a friendly against some u9's just to build some morale. Another poor performance is gonna do damage to the confidence of the squad and the public... Steve, just don't touch anything until Gordon gets there

Hey Stevie, you need to first create a winning culture before you decide to check out players by giving your best, the day off. These guys must have a complete lack of confidence right now, they most probably feel like the worst football team on the continent and you are playing games. Aint going nowhere like this ma man!

  • Ziggamann - 2012-06-12 08:34

This idiot does not deserve to be coach. Why start off with arrogant decisions like splitting senior players from juniors when confidence is low in the camp. Its not like these players have to return to their clubs.

  • poloyatonkim - 2012-06-12 08:57

He should get rid of the whole squad, they are not motivated at all...

  • Arthur - 2012-06-12 08:58

Dont know why this friendly has been scheduled to begin with. SAFA arrrgrrgghh!!!!! However, I agree with releasing some of these players, guys Oupa and Pienaar had very long and demanding seasons and need the rest. Plus this will give other players a chance.

We are always blaming coaches i think its time we check who is at fault here these players have been playing before nd honestly theres nothing fruitful its time for change or we wont see ouq boys in brazil i say steve do whats best for our team

Correct decision. The last thing we want is Pienaar to get crippled against a team like Gabon in a friendly match. We should beat Gabon any way. It also gives an opportunity for some of the others in the squad to shape up and show what they can do.

i must say it is indeed a good decision Steve ,it is time for change besides other players must also get a chance so we can also see what is it that they can offer, cos some of them now thinks if team cant cope without them

why did you leave Simphiwe Tshabalala and Teko Modise, they should have gone as well. Gordon Igesund should come and take his rightful place in the team COACH

Resting Pienaar is simply mind boggling, especially with the team NOT WINNING. Benni Mccarthy should atleast be played in a friendly since he is the only South African who can shoot IN THE NET. Brazil still plays Ronaldineo because he is a good player, although not all the games, he still plays, but Bafana belive they are better than Brazil and have more talent, therefore the good players do not play, unless they just dont want to WIN

What kompela is totally wrong atleast pienaar must be the and khumalo they are good. And what i suggest is simphiwe tshabalala and khune must be not in that matche when we play with gabon they cost our squad. And if we play like this we are not going to quHl
