Cape Town - South African football star Thabo Nthethe says it is a dream come true to represent Bafana Bafana, who he believes are heading in the right direction under the leadership of coach Gordon Igesund.
Nthethe, who recently joined the Mr Price SPORT Heroes team, has been a stalwart at Bloemfontein Celtic for the better part of the last decade, while he has quickly established himself as an integral member of the Bafana squad.
After making his international debut in 2009, the 28-year-old has not only become a regular in the Bafana defence this year, but has also fulfilled an important leadership role.
“Being a professional player your dream is to play for your national team, and being selected for Bafana Bafana made me realise that I am doing well as a player,” Nthethe described. “It has encouraged me to perform even more so that I can get a chance to always represent my country.
“It is a privilege to know that coach Igesund believes in me so much to pick me to be in his team, let alone give me a chance to be a leader when needed - it is truly an honour,” he added.
“The team is doing well under Igesund - he is an uplifting coach who always tries to encourage players to give more for the team.”
On the local football scene, Nthethe has loyally plied his trade at Celtic for the last nine years, where he prides himself on leading by example as the long-serving captain of the team.
“First and foremost, I thank God for a team like Bloemfontein Celtic because this is where I started my professional career,” he reflected.
“I started from the bottom and have grown to the top with this team. They have introduced me to a lot of opportunities, taught me a lot about football and how to handle life, as it has its ups and downs. That is why they are so special to my heart. They are my hometown team and growing up, seeing my family support them, made me love them even more.”
Nthethe was recently signed as an ambassador for Mr Price SPORT, and the Bloemfontein-born star said he had no hesitation in grabbing this opportunity with both hands.
“It is an honour for me to be joining the Mr Price SPORT Heroes team, the fact that they believe in me so much means a lot.”
As part of the aim of the sponsorship, they will be working closely with Nthethe in order to gain his insight into developing a world-class Maxed boot.
“We want to develop a world class soccer boot that is accessible to every soccer playing South African,” explained Mr Price SPORT Marketing Executive Nikki Viljoen.
“We are very happy to be working with a top calibre player such as Thabo and look forward to the end result.”
